Emile Pinet
(Click for Poet Info...)

I was born in a small city, (Bathurst) New Brunswick, Canada, the third eldest of thirteen children, ten girls and three boys. I’m the product of a semi-dysfunctional family, brought up by a physically controlling father, versus a loving nurturing mother. Many of my poems reflect the uniqueness and special circumstances of my upbringing and love of nature.

How To Enter One Of My Contest.

I judge my contests blind and look for ease of flow and poetic devices (such as alliteration, metaphors, and expressive feelings) without being overly flowery or tethered to a thesaurus.

Please check all poems for rhyme or syllable counts before entering them in one of my contests requiring either. I want everyone to have a fair and equal chance to win, so I check every poem.

I only accept perfect rhymes (no near rhymes.)  All contestants must use "RhymeZone". No other program is permissible. No adding an "s" to a word...Example : (Day and Rays) do not rhyme!

I only accept "How Many Syllables" as your source for the number of syllables in a word.
I know that this site can be controversial; however, to be fair to all participants, I will only accept this site when judging your poems while applying common sense when applicable, such as apostrophes, which this sight sometimes count as a syllable.

I hope this helps explain why some poems, although well written, were not chosen as winners for not following the rules that govern all my contests.

Have a good day, and good luck, my friends. Emile.

Emile, each sponsor has their rules and whatever they are I follow them, or try to (lol) I think that stating what you want as a sponsor of the contest is perfectly fine , blessings, Constance

Thank you for this post Emile. Knowing exactly what is expected for a submittal is important, especially since sites vary in agreement of syllable count and rhyme. I like knowing which sponsor accepts whose rules to avoid confusion.

Rules schmules! I think day and rays rhymes nicely. To each his own I suppose. Loosen up, have fun. That's my advice for today

If you can't follow my rules, don't enter, it's that simple.

Hi Emile, Just a quick observation: As these are your "rules" and do not necessarily reflect those of other contest sponsors, would it not be more logical to post these with each of your contests? For example, I usually state "no slang", but it is permissable in my current contest as it has a bearing on it. Other sponsors might welcome slang. I am mentioning it as poets new to this site might think that these points are universal. BTW I, for one, don't like RhymeZone as it includes everything including the kitchen sink and prefer the online dictionaries, especially where perfect rhyme is concerned. Have a nice weekend.

These rules, as you say, are my rules, and I list them in every contest I run.

Thanks for letting us know what you like for your contests. What does the term 'flowery' actually mean? I have heard it a few times now..

I consider 'flowery' to mean the use of pompous, overindulgent, obscure, language that is tethered to a thesaurus and does little to enhance the poem's theme.
