massed magpies
in a black and white city
united in joy
passing from the back-pointless posession *
* based on my active & close knowledge of 80+ years
I am adopted and a single child
having a stammer since pre-school
I also loved soccer to play and watch
at 12, I got to go to my first game, real cool!
This was fab to go on my own
for the very first time just me
a real sense of freedom I stood there
on the terrace standing tall as a tree
That was the first of many games
throughout lots of years
many victories among many defeats
the atmosphere and thrill tingle my ears
Looking back now to a special memory
that first day lies special in my heart
feeling that sense of security but free
this was to mould me in no small part
That day prepared me for future life
whatever struggles of life would face
the grounding I made then framed me
to lift myself over every hilltop without a trace
I love my Soccer Saturday's.
Today's the day that my team plays.
Sit back, relax, enjoy a beer.
If my team scores, you know I'll cheer.
My feet up, whilst it's cold outside.
If we lose, then I'll be mortified.
So I'm praying for an easy win.
Whilst hoping that my bet comes in.
When the game is just about to start.
Anxiety kicks in and plays its part.
My team is now in cruise control.
I'm just needing them to score a goal!
They take a shot; the ball goes in.
It's looking like an easy win.
As I sit there chewing on my nails.
Whilst hoping that my team prevails.
You keep an eye upon the clock.
Tick tock, tick tock, tick tock, tick tock.
As the referee then blows for time.
Yes!! That's it!! Victory's mine!!
We live to fight another day.
I love my Soccer Saturday!!
I want to feel the ground swell
to share it
Saturday, comes too soon
drowns the afternoon
and see City demoted for fair play
10,000 plastic cups
a river of lager streams
Its not that I'm afraid of fencing
but these stadiums hem me in
Don’t kick my shin
Lest I grin and
Your chin gets kneed.
Don’t touch the ball
Not at all or
The call will come.
Don’t pass the line
Tis a crime, you’ll
Do time for this.
Don’t hog the ball
Share with all and
Stand tall for team!
playing out from the back
a slow sideways
- defensive form of attack
with such a premium on possession
-back&across
soccer with such goals
-loses its gloss
for fear of defeat
- brings negativity
boredom & much wasted opportunity
If a reactive ,possession style is proclaimed
it is vital to win the final football trophy game
Can anyone follow the news anymore?
during Euro 2024,
after the UK elections,
when I want to know the latest selections,
In Gareth Southgate’s team,
In Sir Keir Starmer’s team,
with everyone analysing, prophesying,
what this or that might mean.
Even if we heard those songs before,
all the pundits are oh so cock-sure,
everyone thinks they know the score,
the truth is nobody ever knows,
until that final whistle blows.
Everyone’s riding their luck, their chance,
pick up a history book, take a glance,
they never write any of them in advance.
That 2-1 defeat hurt, but it was no disgrace,
after all England, still claimed second place,
so I will congratulate Spain,
and celebrate how far our team came,
give our manager and players, respect that's due,
that's the least, that anyone can do.
The news from the US, just got even worse,
it's time that I returned to my verse,
or read the latest on Port Talbot steel,
then go back to following Labour's New Deal.
Oh dear oh dear
where is the beautiful game?
behind its defensive wall
it seems passing back&forth
is now the be&end-all-
reactive not proactive & no guile
'wing-back' sums-up this woeful style

deep dark despair depression

A cool Autumn morning we caught the bus,off at eleven without much fuss. One
and half return from Croft to Leigh a birthday treat from Dad to me.Hopped on a tram to Burden park to see Stan Mathews make his mark.Through the turnstile into the town end, crushed and crammed like cattle penned.
Mathews, Mortenson versus Nathaniel Lofthouse,a match for connoisseurs to watch. Wembly star Stan playing on at thirty eight still making inch perfect
crosses on a plate. Shimmy,side-step,feint and dazzle, leaving the defenders in a
right frazzle. Our ageing hero displayed all his twinkling skills, the complete pro
without modern-day frills. Most pundits considered Stan an aged has-been but no better talent had ever been seen.
The whistle goes and the crowd roars,
I hope that my team is the first to score.
Everyone has a song to sing,
As the ball flashes past to our man on the wing.
How can the players run so fast,
Adn to keep on running until the last.
From a throw in you can almost touch your favourite,
But he is concetrating and won't notice even a little bit.
Then the number 10 steals a yard,
He strikes the ball so sweet and so hard,
Right into the top corner where you can see the net ripple.
There's a sudden pause then the crowd all cheer, the players hug and they go flying by,
The emotions so strong I have seen grown men cry!
The teams from all over the world,
Met down and under the world,
They came from Asia, Africa, Europe,
Latin America, North America, and all over the world.
The Women were young girls, stout and healthy,
In every game, they showed their vigor and muscle,
The expressions of scored goal were portrait kept in heart,
A missed goal was a heartbreak, they still tried their best.
Every game was delightful to watch,
The faces showed the expression of kicks,
Size and stature did not make any difference,
Tackle, passing, headers, and shots, what made all the difference,
Being a sport fan, I salute all the teams,
No matter who won, you all were my winners.
Congratulations to Spain, the FIFA Women's World Cup 2023 Champions (in their first-ever Women's World Cup Final), after defeating England 1-0 today! Congratulations also to The Lionesses. In addition to winning the European Championship last year, this is the first time England reached the Women's World Cup championship, and it is also the first time an England team has reached a World Cup final since the men's team won in 1966. So Spain and England can stand proud as game changers, in harmony with this year's World Cup theme: "Beyond Greatness!"
