On My Own For The First Time

I am adopted and a single child
having a stammer since pre-school
I also loved soccer to play and watch
at 12, I got to go to my first game, real cool!

This was fab to go on my own
for the very first time just me
a real sense of freedom I stood there
on the terrace standing tall as a tree

That was the first of many games
throughout lots of years
many victories among many defeats
the atmosphere and thrill tingle my ears

Looking back now to a special memory
that first day lies special in my heart
feeling that sense of security but free
this was to mould me in no small part

That day prepared me for future life
whatever struggles of life would face
the grounding I made then framed me
to lift myself over every hilltop without a trace

Being a single mom for several years, Ricky asked me to sit with him to watch whether it was cricket, football, rugby or tennis. The only time I saw anything live was when we visited my cousin when i was still in my teens who lived in Rhodesia, and his family took us to horse racing , so I placed a few bets and won every time! BLESSINGS, JENNIFER.

Such a nice memory Gordon. I don't like watching games on t.v. but loved it when we attended games in person, the excitement is over the top! I love your poem.

Thanks BJ, Glad you loved this piece, I only watch games on tv as the price to go to a game is so expensive here in Scotland. Have a great day,Gordon

Hi Gordon, I know that you were having acute stammering and as a result, you encountered some inferiority complex as a child. But that day when you played soccer and became a victor, it pepped up your self confidence. From then on, through success and defeat you have remained calm and cool. A poem giving great inspiration to those who read this. Thanks dear friend for sharing.

Hi Gordon, it’s a great feeling to be free, it took a very long time for it to happen to me. I was brought up near to the Aston Villa football stadium, my dad was a supporter and two of my sisters still are. I remember well the loud cheers when Villa scored a goal. Happy days they were back then… Beryl

- Life will offer both good and demanding times ... "many victories among many defeats" ... loved football ... play and watch ... freedom ... "I stood there on the terrace standing tall as a tree" ... To me it sounds like you weren't part of the team, Gorden - hugs

Hello Gordon, Apologies for dropping off the radar a few days but had some catching up to do. Anywho...LOVE this sports related piece of poetry as it reminds me of my own early year football and track running days. I was quite the athlete as well and sounds like you were too. This poem brings back many of my own wonderful memories. Have a great weekend and of course...Write On!
