Distant shores tumble over the rocks
Resting among orange lichen and salt grass
Warmed by the sun

Herring gulls circle, searching for food
Uneven rocks slow my path to shelter

Where comfort waits for me...

Mt. Olivet Cemetery: Nashville
The monstrous spires uprise
But never touch the skies,
Vain, earth-foundationed monuments
To Life’s impermanence.

Expensive markers war with Time
Where lichen mosses climb
And cover up each hand-carved word
That tells of those interred....

First Light
The pond is brackish
a smear of lichen,
a low haze.

Water birds dabble in their sleep.
Soon the sun
will dash across a drop of dew
to burst dams of light.

Wings will shake off
dwindling shadows,
slap the wet air
until the water awakes....

Shades of Green
In ancient woodlands
I am breathless,
hushed beneath lush foliage
and dappling sunlight.
A brook leaps lichen rocks.
Ferns unfurl extending tendrils
to a distant sky.
Pin cushions of moss
carpet the forest.
I am awakened
to colours and textures
of leafy green....

People chasing the truth
utter the past
chase the line of least discourse
hark a time in the distance
don't blame the numbers in the sand
lichen will cover the scornful
a distant cove as cover
the place before the vetch
I did not choose it
A gift utterly unloved
by a familial sky

Archeological Reverence
The golden chair of opulence
Seats a stately emperor,
Enrobed in royal purple hue
Of lichen moss that shrouds his bones from view.

And yet he holds you in his thrall,
Millennia since he has lived,
You bow before his exhumed throne,
And kiss, in fealty, his toe of bone....

Trees abandoned from their leaves
                              Wearing boughs of lichen sleeves
A blanket from the cold breeze

ubiquitous queues of lichen

In Spring
In Spring

In spring water troughs
fart all the
musical notes, butterflies go to
Collage school, four-leaf clovers babysit
bulldogs, placemats collect bits of
string to
make balls, lichen await letters from
royalty all over
the world, sticks go for
runs, not to
lose weight, but just for
fun.

Blue Flash
Lichen that writes history on a page
Blue flash buttressing hope
Old Woman in stone barn
Her memory waits your coming
Vice like her rumblerings
especially in Autumn time
where frost is punishing
catches the crabbing sun
MY heart shudders as she talks
The syllabic blood that drains
as twittering seagulls loom...

Cold Autumn Motionless
In the soak of the rain
Church bells chime
and the lichen covers gravestones
There is not much change in the touch of needle
Silence falls between the leaves
belonging to the netherworld
of coldness cussing down winding roads
like false hope aching to the core
of lose faltering teasing your skin
Lodgements if only we could...

the face of a flower

still water mirrors
and Autumn’s first show
All of them captured
