I am left alone
a bird of prey
feasting on carrion
wasting my talent
roosting on the ground
unable to grasp
the inevitable
longing for the wind’s
warm updraft

Emu second largest.
Eggs bright emerald green.
Eyes are beady light brown.
Every emu’s flightless.
Eat pebbles to digest.
Easily fooled not smart.
Extra long legs run fast....

Says the ostrich to the emu with sigh,

   "We have a pair of wings yet cannot fly!

      I guess its just our bad luck

         That we can't cruise like a duck.

            Why have these things?  I'll ever ponder why!"

All pie-eyed, I leapt up in the sky to defy
And to decry my flightless plight, that I deny.
I made my wings of feathers, wax and strings,
All strung together with rings, springs and other things.
But aghast, I flew too high, too close to sun's hot blast,
The wax dripped, alas I slipped and fell, like a pie downcast....

flare like a peacock,
fish bones hiss
on a shale whipped beach,
banshee’s are dredged from sandy graves,
spume slaps nests of air.

Waves boom inside my beached ribs.
I am so full of sadness
that I hear myself mew
like a gull in a gale
when it tumbles
as flightless as stone....

how I wish upon you
to carry me afar,
my childhood spent
as a flightless bird,
my wings stifled
by the hands of a mother
who loved me too much
to let me be free.
Oh, crane,
can I still fly?
Can my folded wings
