Simple Arithmetic
One
Plus two,
Equals three;
Three and one, four.
One plus four makes five
...Three in two places?...Six!
Hence, six less one, five;
Four less none, four.
Five less three,
Gives two...
One....

Expensive Wretched Book
in the middle

simple arithmetic
when I look

the end
twice as long
from where I began
story weak
patience lost
took the book
forgot the cost
threw it up
then it fell

Premium Member Modern Math Is Not For Me
Tally marks, bar graphs, pie charts too
Mathematic formulas make me blue
Geometry turns my purple blood cold
The new math makes me feel truly old

Arithmetic word problems are my forte’
When I read them, I say this is okay.
X minus Y may indeed be twenty-three
But please keep modern math away from me...

Yesterday
YESTERDAY

Peace shrouded on your face
Make me sick.
You used to open a bundle of words
Like water flowing from pipe
Pearls and sharpened crystals-

You have worn a mask of silence
It becomes you not
Tallying calculations
Complex arithmetic
Narrow time.

I'm afraid to look at you
Deep silence between us
Makes me Frightened...

Arithmetic
The day was killed
diving in the books.
A lamb was dyed to
please the race.

You gambled for water
huddled in eyes.
I wanted to scatter the pearls
on cheeks.

Drenched in gasoline you
tried to send the message.
A flame was ready to
light the dark.

Margarine had the lustre
but was not a gold.
A red hot iron will
tell you the same.

St. John gave its pupils arithmetic
I glided through these
Like breeze of Belize

Los Angeles City College leveled me
Algebra had me on my knees

YET

I clamored to Cal. State, Long Beach,
Where Information Science sacked me

I fought back on campus lush lawns
Lingered crossed-leg in summer sun

WON

My grade was not an F
I graduated and felt blessed.

Bipolar
North pole, South pole
parallel lines.
Sugar and spice,
our noses collide.
English and arithmetic
are both forms of language,
but we don't speak
in common tongues
needed to define.

Darkness, sunshine,
city and grass,
Water and vinegar,
digressing off the map.
Psychology is a science,
and music takes soul,
but our hearts don't mesh
like our bodies do
at the 4 a.m. toll....

Premium Member Math Is Not My Game
If seven times five is thirty-five Aunty C,
Can forty minus five also thirty-five be?
And what about five times seven and fifty minus fifteen?
How can they all be thirty-five? What does it all mean?

Not sure I said to the child. Math is not my game.
I would rather be assigned coyotes to blame
Some solve arithmetic problems, but I always fold.
Geometry makes my literary blood run cold....

Farewell
They will not allow the assisted suicide.
The beetles; fiery and drunk.

After the betrayal of arithmetic,
the spiral staircase.

Fireflies set foot on the skies
to measure the darkness.

The fire between us, of burning fat,
of thousand years, terrifies me.

Moon bleeds on grass, I prick the
voice of the hugging earth.

The salt of the lips now hurts
it was your parting kiss, O sun!

A Sweet Dream
Her smiling face,
As a cardinal Bird,
Sings in my mind,
To develop new craft images,
To appear in my sleep,
Becoming a sweet dream.

Her smiling lips,
A melanic melody,
To melt away memories,
To mend one’s pace,
A mental arithmetic,
To find one’s bearings.

Her smiling eyes,
To put one’s finger on,
To get someone’s down
To a fine art, a fire bucket,
Finders’ keepers,
To find to the finish....

Predetor
High above clouds
You flew
Radar focusing beneath
In search of prey.

Image fell on screen
One walking in haste
His head bowed down
Wondering at
Mismatching arithmetic
At home, office
Breaking his back
To meet ends both
Nebulous mind.

Flare in your eyes
Like a diving bird
Impertinent crash landing
Sharp claws clung
An ascension with prey
Into unreachable heights
Vanishing into thin blue.

A quill is shed
Life drops dead....

Yearning For Girls
And I dreamt
Of a story I never wrote
My passion bought me a stooge
I dreamt where I should not
A place of books and learning.

My friends and foes laughed
At my folly presented entertainment
Day dreaming at a stuck of Arithmetic
Of Lucy and many beautiful girls.

And of course I learnt
What I have hidden between, a quote
A secret among the three knowledge
Me, my pen and my note
Never give many girls a yearning....

Based on observable
And well-documented evidence,
War is nothing but the deliberate
And systematic erasure of human life,
With the purpose of achieving
Some political goal.
In quantifying the variables
That factor into the equation,
There is not, so much,
A calculus of war,
As there is a basic arithmetic,
And it is computed
With the rubber end of a pencil.
In a war of attrition,
God is on the side
Of the big erasers....

Nothing More
When she closed her eyes
the weight of the world went away,
she could be whatever or whomever
she wanted; nothing more than a dream to dream.

When she closed her eyes
the potential of the world was realized,
she could, with elementary arithmetic,
add it all up, give grace to God and be good.

There was not always time
to close her eyes. Sometimes she had to watch
the world this way; bent and brutal.
This too she subtracted for God....
