Rip and Wolf Van Winkle

Children, can you hear the thunder and the gale?
It's time to tell that old and fateful tale.
Nobody knows it better than I know,
the dog named Wolf who died so long ago.

It began with an Autumnal hunting trip

Alice passed away this week,

A line of waves
begin their run to shore,
lifting, rising up and flaring
cobra like as if preparing 
to strike, gliding forward
until the shallows down them
and they fall, deflating
to a withering crawl 
up the incline of a beach,
beaten into tiny bubbles
that burst harmless at my feet.

I am safe here
beyond the lethal reach

I read that RIP could also mean Return if Possible,
I am such a fan of the impossible.
I can imagine the night you took flight,
Soaring up to the sky so bright.
Fleeing from the pressure and pain,
Finally free, and you finally feel sane.

Up to the arms of those who left us,
Surrounding you and making a fuss.
