North Poems

Southern Cross

The Saint Lucia flag reflects the tropical sky,
with the colour blue representing fidelity
and the emerald waters
of the Atlantic Ocean and Caribbean Sea.
Gold represents the prevailing sunshine
and, of course, prosperity.
The triangles, they symbolize mountains,
the Soufriere twin Pitons,
and the people's hope and aspirations.
While there, couldn't help but smile,
for tho' located north of the equator,
with my eyes on

A Nautical Truth - Water Is Magnetic

This is for all those of an ocean-going mind who, for no apparent reason, are compelled down to the seas again.

Throughout history, water, in all its forms, has held an attraction to humanity. Whether it be wading 'neath a waterfall, paddling in the pool, walking by the weir, crossing a canal, riparian tendencies, such as

My Own North Star

A quiet hum, a gentle breeze,
No urgent calls, no need to please.
The world outside can spin and sway,
I find my peace in my own way.

No echoing steps upon the floor,
No voice to seek beyond my door.
Just silent thoughts, a mind at ease,
Unburdened by dependencies.

The path I walk, it's mine alone,
No guiding hand,

What is your North Star,
Your moral compass
Which all your oughts and shoulds
And not good enoughs revolve around?

Every time we see the world
Either as good or needing to be better
We’re judging by an internal compass
It has taken a lifetime to form.

And it’s a compass
Influenced by and expressing
Everything we have ever learned
Everything we have ever

Up North

There is another peninsula I’ve been meaning to see.
Up there, there is a shoreline just for me.
Maybe I’ll drive up north on Friday.
There’s no reason to take a plane where I’d have to pay.
Just enough money for gas and food.
Gas stations with keychains for every mood.
We stopped at my favorite

Come forth our Angel of the North Stokesy

Come forth our Angel of the North
Working class…but VIP pass…standing sentry for cricketing gentry
Towering injury tarnished Talisman penury
Revarnished..primacy rebooted for his mooted destiny and legacy
Poetry in motion..the emotion
The devotion..our commotion potion

Rejuvenation
India rue what Stokes does imbue
Hadn’t got a clue what to do
Trepidation…procrastination..then damnation
Stewed…then skewed..eschewed..slewed and screwed by the
Hullabaloo dude..voodoo feud…hoodoo mood and rude juju

Davy Crockett 1786-1836

According to the ballad,
Davy Crockett, born in Tennessee
(part of North Carolina at the time),
kilt him a b'ar when he was only three
(altho' only a song,
always had my doubts about cruelty to animals
from one so young).
Playing with it night and day, young Davy
should have taken more care
(had a hunting reputation),
he pulled the arms and legs off
his

Nanook Of The North

When not out clubbing
hey-ho the merry oh
at night with the Inuit
I suspect by intuit
an intrepid Inuk named Nanook
a-hunting walrus he would go
with his trusty harpoon
traipsing 'cross the ice and snow
then when paddling afloat he went
in the harsh Arctic environment
to keep out the bitter cold and damp
in the very bottom of his boat
there was a fiery

Stopping on the Old North Bridge

after “Stopping by Woods on a Snowy Evening”, by Robert Frost

This bridge meant something in some war,
some yarn of man and God and law:
but I think more of her and me:
what were those others fighting for?

There’s so much here to feel and see,
and yet it’s rubbernecker-free!
I love to watch the fishes jump:
they sense the serendipity!

Lads

Poles Apart

Polar bear at the north pole,
floating on a lone ice floe,
thinks to himself,
'What happened to my world,
where did all the ice go?'

If to the south pole he did depart,
penguins to compare,
would he then be,
a well-traveled
bipolar bear?

Premium MemberAsheville North Carolina

Walking downtown streets of Asheville
I could hear drums in the white wind
Despite being deserted I feel a thrill
Of creative energy hoping to thrive again

The shops full of unique crafts and goods
With store workers seemingly bored
Gentrified was the emerald neighborhood
But evidence of roots still in stores

Helene had come through full steam
Wiping away many

Josh Moore North Dakota II

TV news broadcasts the motel dark,
she lies flat, belly soft with rabbit tattoos,
ash smudged into the sheets.

My boots drip clay and pesticide,
fingers stained from counting nickels.

Outside, a pumpjack bows to the ground,
over and over,
like it’s praying.

She whispers something about escape.
I kiss the scar beneath her jaw,
taste motel soap and Marlboro light.

The window rattles
an oil train
