Holy Roller

There once was an old Pope from Rome
who had the Good Book a huge tome
an altar ego and mass appeal
so he made the Vatican home
2015 he addressed the environment
on climate change caused by man
and issued a Catholic Church encyclical
the first-ever since Popes began
let's trust instructing his cardinals
to avoid any more scandals
when pontificating and preaching to the choir
to burn less incense and light fewer candles
altho' it's a slippery slope here's the dope
and no I won't soft-soap
there's not much hope of Pope on a rope
but I can cope so I won't mope
now hear my voice as it's a choice
if I may be quite so bold
religion is discretionary not hereditary
and the herd of sheep in the fold should be told

THE REAL HEROES THAT DAY

May we be blessed to understand what a hero is…
when it comes to our dominion
because in our country at this moment there is a difference of opinion…

I believe the Capitol police who died defending our Capitol 
and safeguarding our freedom January 6 were heroes…
To uphold and defend the Constitution of the United States 
and the laws of the District of Columbia 
these oaths…they were fulfilling them.

While President Trump issued a blanket pardon 
to more than1,500 people charged in the insurrection…
including those responsible for killing them.

But we will not be swayed by those trying to re-write history…
Those of us who witnessed the insurrection that day…will not be deterred…
For we will always remember what happened
and we know who the heroes were!

This Sceptred Isle

so long as macaques inhabit the Rock
another of man's legendary absurdities
but should those Barbary apes depart
the British too will soon follow
and the Overseas Territory come apart
yet to save the primate population

reinforcing British rule would persist
to ensure the troop replenishment
he issued a directive September 1944
for five such females brought from Morocco 
to maintain the number at twenty-four
and so it seems my friend in the end
the continuance of this green and pleasant land
is in the balance and totally dependent on keeping
a certain breed of bird and Old World monkey on hand

Rabbit Relaxes

Rabbit was issued an invitation from the cucumber king
He could attend a spa, if he wore his red ruby ring
While rabbit was soaking in the sauna the ring got taken
I bet it’s the king, he thought; he was not mistaken

He was in a dilemma, for if he accused the king
Of not just taking, but stealing his red ruby ring
He might be flayed, beheaded or killed that day.
He decided to relax and enjoy the sauna; what the hay?

Obviously out of uniform, the only soldier not wearing his field jacket 
is easily spotted in my morning formation to ensure proper fit and wear 
of the newly issued 1984 Battle Dress Uniform prior to the commander’s
inspection this afternoon.

The Army BDU camouflage pattern of green, brown, tan and black replaces 
the solid colored olive drab green work fatigue uniform worn since 1952.  

“Where's your jacket, Private?” 

“I took it out of my wall locker, First Sergeant, laid it on the bunk, looked
 away for only a minute while putting on my boots and then couldn't find 
my jacket anywhere.”

Unable to stop laughing, I dismiss the formation.

First Platoon boards the Huey, sickly smell of sweat and death
elbow to elbow we sit cramped in the narrow compartment

hot, sticky air like a sauna grips us in its wet claws
rotors spin, air rushes through the open doors 
but no relief is felt from the hot, breath of the dragon

gnawing fear grips each man as the bird lifts off
taking us to places we don’t want to go

the green canopy is now below us concealing them but not us
we land at the LZ, bullets snapping and popping as we emerge

the encounter is short, bloody, cries of wounded, silence of dead
First Platoon boards the Huey, sickly smell of sweat and death

gnawing fear grips each man as the bird lifts off
are we headed back to the firebase, home, safety from the fire
safety from the fear and death and sweat

Hueys flying the wrong way, new orders issued
on to the next hot LZ more fear death and sweat

Curses, Foiled Again

    The King of Moab was named Balak
       Truth be told, he was cruel, diabolic

    Afraid of the Israelites, he hired the sorcerer Balaam
        a ‘prophet-for-hire,’ he’d curse the Jews with nary a qualm

    Yet whenever Balaam tried to curse the Jews
        praises issued forth from his mouth, quite a few

    Balak had figured the Jews’ leader, Moses, fights with words of the Lord
        So he'd hire the prophet Balaam; the Lord also infuses his vocal cords… 

    But poor Balak made one enormous mistake
        Moses stuttered badly – ‘twas Aaron’s words made the earth quake
           
     Moses’ hidden weapon was his heart, united with God, whom he loved
        unlike mercenary Balaam ~ for a heart he was devoid of

To Love a Beast

She offered him a single rose to stay the night inside,
But he a prince, and she a hag, the Prince her rose denied.
He thus began to close the door, retreating to his space,
But the old hag’s repulsiveness then melted from her face.
The Prince tried to apologize, for with his eyes he saw
A beauty unsurpassed that left him standing there in awe.
A true enchantress was the hag; she’d issued him a test,
But he had failed, for he would not admit her as a guest.
A curse she placed upon him then, that changed would be his form,
And as a beast he’d live until his heart he could reform.
If his own selfishness he beat and he to love could learn,
His freedom from his beastly state the Prince could one day earn.
His curse brought him despair, and harsh it was to say the least;
He lost all hope, for who could ever learn to love a beast?

     I was issued an unreasonable fine driving on 31 south rush hour
     see a random abnormality, a bus with a flashing sign 4 lanes over
     i hit the brakes to stop missed it by 6 feet but stayed stopped anyway
     just when an opening came to take off
     blue lights pulled off behind me to make a sitting traffic stop 
     failure to yield you got caught, sir I stopped thats why im sitting here

     so I took the ticket and carried it home me and dad both could not 
     understand how this could be anything but a money-making ploy
     no kid got off the bus at big lots, and it was 13 miles to the nearest home.
     so we decided that doing the right thing had only got me boned.

     So even if you live by the ideal of never being ill prepared
     even if you keep good pads and drilled and slotted rotors for enhanced
     grab. even if you try to do the right thing do not test the limits
     of the school bus swinging stop with yellow lighting
