Now that I am seventy-three years old,
people finally treat me with respect.
Graying hair contributes, so I’ve been told,
creating effects, one learns to expect—
doors held open, assistance offered,
discounts given at restaurants and stores.
Smiles exchanged and salutations proffered,
as though we are highly esteemed mentors.
