Coffee: The Greatest Of All Time

The little humble bean
that found its way into a cup
made a splash upon the scene
after Kaldi’s goat had stirred it up

it travelled fast and well
from Ethiopia to Yemen
some called it the drink from hell
until Clement became a fan.

the aroma crossed the pond
and Boston had to celebrate
once the New World had succumbed
it quickly poured out into states

before old London knew
they served it morning, noon and night
this penny university brew
would see its name put up in lights

in newspapers and magazines
the high street flooded with its shops
a berry rarely seen
in processed form warmed more than pots

served in different ways
from skinny whites to espresso shots
cappuccinos to tall lattes
we toast the goat that time forgot.

One of soft summer evenings is fading and passers go by
Cappuccino in hand and a cig, you relax in delight
Sick and happy you sit, and it must be your favorite style
Or at least that's the way I remember the terrace at night
I'm a Don Quixote's sword, broken down to pieces in hopeless attack
You're a daughter of time from a windmill of fair solitude
We touched on some topics but the one most essential we lack
But we smoked it together, when silence was looking quite good
Cappuccinos and smiles jumbled up in cubistic galore
All our sorries and thank you’s swirl rounds, dancing over the mall
Sudden windflaw blows off paper tissues, and slams the back door
Time to go, leaving crumbles and ash, I bet you’ve said it all.

Bloomed

BLOOMED

I saw a vision in the early spring,
A haunting vision of pure loveliness.
Her silken hair cascading down her back,
She sat there, lost in thoughts of who knows what.
I coughed discreetly, guilty to invade
Her silent reverie;, her private thoughts.
“May I join you, every table’s full?”
She smiled, “I’m sorry, I was miles away.”
She smiled and I immediately knew
That I would love her till the end of time.
We chatted while our cappuccinos cooled.
So many cappuccinos have cooled since,
As our love bloomed from that first moment when
I saw a vision in the early spring

A beaver and a bandicoot,
After playing squash one day,
Were sipping cappuccinos
At a quaint outdoor café.
"Ah, thish ish sho like Parish",
Lisped the beaver with a sigh.
"And I," remarked the bandicoot,
"am 'minded of Mumbai,
And Rome, and Barcelona,
And so many other places."
The beaver merely sat there
Being quiet and making faces.
"What's the matter, chum?" asked bandicoot,
His voice as soft as flannel,
"I thought you tripped as much as I.
Don't you watch the Travel Channel?"

Grandma

Grandma, we miss you
You were loved by all the family
Each and every day

We had lots of fun together
Never to be forgotten
Grandma, we miss you

You loved cappuccinos
And heated dinner plates
Grandma, we miss you

All the family together at New Year
Going to panto each year
Grandma, we miss you

Coming to see me in a dancing show
Or a Girls’ Brigade Display
Grandma, we miss you

So many things we did together
And I want you to know
You are still loved to this day

Acrid smoke in the scientist’s bell jar
Blankets of chenille-covered snow
Crystalline carbon diamond star
Drips forming stalactites grow
Effervescent waterfalls’ dreams
Frothy-topped cappuccinos
Gelid surfaces of lakes and streams
Halos of angels in holy repose
Icebergs splitting from their source
Jasmine-covered pergolas in Spring
Knuckles clenched in fear or remorse
Love’s purest form sobering
Mandala patterns on frosted window
Newly-born flamboyant flamingos
Opalescent lustre of pearls on show
Pineapple-licious snow cones
Quills of the porcupines’ defense
Ringlets of great-grandparents’ hair
Steamy hot springs vapor intense
Trailing wisps of London fog air
Undulating winter foothill maze
Veils of fine tatted lace purity
Wieliczka Salt Mine passageways
Xilinous spider webs artistry
Yahrzeit candle flame in memoriam
Zephyrus ballooning sails on a whim

broken strings
on your guitar
no longer get repaired
and rough songs
lay scattered
'cross your room

you're not here
where lattes
where cappuccinos
meshed with your tales
of soul, of sex
and reparations

your dream
came by today
a thirst for those stories
that brought us joy
that brought us tears
clinging to their faces

Aye
Okay

Here we go
My first and last initials are D.O
Paying haters little mind, and smacking 'em away like a mosquito
With the force of el Nino
Skills of Morpheus and Neo
Knowledge of C3PO

Been in and out of a few casinos
I've bought tools and supplies from the home depot
And liked tracks off the album sixobreezo
As well as a lot of music by man of no ego

My amigo knows how to roll up the good stuff, bigger than a burrito
And torpedo

Another homie makes me laugh, when he talks about cappuccinos

Or my other friend when he's got a bag of cheetohs

Meanwhile, worldwide cars and items occasionally got a repo

Realize there won't always be an opportunity for a T.O.

Better get on that, and quickly address the B.O.

Not yet have I had a P.O.

Or worn a tuxedo

I was good at sports and shooting ball even freethrows

A long time ago, my oldest sister had a Kia Rio

Coffee Cup Calculations - Poet's Cut

Based on BBC news article "Maths zeroes in on perfect cup of coffee"
http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/science-environment-37989169

Two billion cups a day we drink
To stay awake so we can think
Tireless workers - every nation
Need a caffeine drink equation

Lattes, mochas, cappuccinos
Our calculator super heroes
Measured, reasoned, wrote a theorem
Clockwork system - mighty fearsome

Divide the beans and add hot water
Multiplies the bean aroma
Takes away the taste chaotic
Get this right - it's sums and logic

China cups the theory goes
Helps the smell go up you nose
Cardboard mug with plastic roof
Not as good, but where's the proof?

But their reason's most disjoint
Like whole numbers - has no point
You just need a rule of thumb
QED for us dumb-dumbs

Measured, reasoned, wrote a theorem
Clockwork system - mighty fearsome

No longer need barista instinct
Random variations extinct
Future bistros turn bizarre
Robots running coffee bars

Multiplies the bean aroma
Takes away the taste chaotic
Get this right - it's sums and logic

China cups the theory goes
Helps the smell go up you nose
Cardboard mug with plastic roof
Not as good, but where's the proof?

Coffee can't be served alone
You don't need maths - it's just well known
Donut, muffin you could try
Bagel, biscuit, slice of pi

But their reason's most disjoint
Like whole numbers - has no point
You just need a rule of thumb

Premium MemberThe Lesson

lost my two front teeth
in a fall
this past fall
put two shiny new Washington quarters
under my pillow
to get replacements

Daddy told me
that his dental plan
will replace
only up to one Roosevelt
in a twelve month period
if at all

he said that this condition
was a result of a conspiracy in our modern society
driven
by corrupt, exploiting and greedy
tooth fairies in expensive blue suits and white coats
driving BMWs and Mercedes
drinking lattes and cappuccinos
under the banners of humanity, fairness and truth
and the stars and stripes
cheating on their spouses
putting their assets in accounts outside the reach
of the IRS
and who would do in their mother for a Roosevelt
