The Judge is NOT judging, you all put in the work for those of us who judge - the judge should put in the work for YOU.

There have been other sponsors who judge in a similair manner and that's their thing, I view these contests as inspiration and a learning tool, each one a new lesson in writing, if I place, wonderful, if I don't, well I still did something to improve my skill, like attempt a new form or idea and never mind soul and heart, I pour my tears and sorrow into my poetry and those NA's for sure hurt but every poem cannot be a winner and as for an HM at least your poem gets exposure, so to me that's a good thing . .

The complaints here are NOT about being upset for not winning or getting an HM…they are about feeling that, among 36 HMs, there just has to be more levels of worthiness and grading…they can’t all be on the same plateau of worthiness, and the better ones should be recognized accordingly, perhaps with more placements levels from 1-10. Even diamonds have 11 levels of grading from Flawless to the least favorable grade named Included I-3. After selecting his diamonds for the top three levels, the jeweler would never put all the other 8 levels of his gems into the lowest grade level, Included I-3. Just my thoughts...

Alas, it would seem that the panacea of equality has reached the level of youth sports where they don't keep score, lest the self esteem of the loser be dashed, and give trophies to everyone for doing whatever they did while the game was going on. I submit many poems to many contests and realize that the judges view the poem through a different filter than I do. I also know, from judging contests, how difficult it is to interpret and evaluate another's poetry.

Oh well, this Highlander may as well get in on the act. I haven't sponsored a contest in all my time here, but I do believe that those whom do have the right to promote their contest as they see fit. My thoughts on 36 HM's, I think it's to many, but then again, it's not my contest!!

Don't worry, my friend, Anne Lise Andresen. My contests always have LOTS of winners that can build moral. In honor of your blog... I'm putting up another contest. I like to encourage everyone to write and love to help display their work. There's room for all types of contests here at PoetrySoup. This contest is in honor of the masses of people who can't seem to win.

I have contests where everyone wins because I want people, especially those new to poetry to get a chance to show their stuff. Other wise... usually, only the more professional people are the only ones to win. But Justin has the right to run his contest any way he wants... The Honerable mentions get every one else's work displayed. So good for you Justin... Tho I might have has more then 3... But that's just me... I still back your decision.

Anne-Lise, my dear Sunshine, I feel I must write something here though I'm out of the Soup for a bit. I've joined 3 of this sponsor's contests and have placed first. Obviously, that gave me joy. I did NOT join this latest contest for various reasons and one was that I was afraid he might get criticized for his judgment. Contests are a risky business because you are catering to the likes of ONE person. His contest...his rules. This is NOT his first contest, so people who don't want to risk an HM should not join. Believe me...there are contest sponsors I do NOT write for...and never will. I know their likes and dislikes and I know...I'm not their cup of tea. I won't write for them.

Yes, sweetie....I don't join the 3rd category. After a few tries with certain sponsors...I throw in the towel. What's the use. I join few contests....but when I do...I put my heart and soul and spirit in every word. :) Hugs

I love you, Sunshine. I really don't like it when I get HM...or N/A...I don't write for sponsors who give me a low placement or don't place me at all. Why bother. So I understand the hurt feelings....but this is his fourth or so contest, so the participants knew his form of judging. I'm glad I at least have my two wins to brighten my heart. Some other judges don't give me first place wins...some like Debbie and Craig and others have. You take what you get. Hugs

Hi sweetie, I respect Justin's judging and will keep entering his contests if I'm inspired by the theme. I think this contest's results may be more to difficult swallow because of the powerful emotions asked of the writers. I try to support as many contests as I can. It helps the site, the sponsors and improves my writing despite the outcome. I'm not sure if Justin will respond, but I will tell him the same, I respect his decision...have a blessed weekend, :)Rhonda

I admire your honest...especially since you did not join this contest yourself. It goes to show that you have no ulterior motive. I'm just concerned about singling out a particular judge when many others do the same or similar things. This judge has hosted contests before with the same way of judging. If a person doesn't like it....they shouldn't join his contest. There are sponsors I don't write for...and never will. I know they way they do their judging...why set myself up for failure? You know I love you, Sunshine, but I also must say what I think....

There are other sponsors who do things they feel is right that I don't agree with. Others who give many HM placements or who don't give a first place if they feel the poem is not up to par. A poet gets to know what a sponsor wants and plays up to their expectations. I'm not saying that's right. I'm saying that's the way it goes.
Date: 3/13/2015 7:00:00 PM
I respect the sponsors right to judge and place his or her own way, but I do understand the disappointment. With a contest that requires such a personal outpouring and connection to the work, it's not difficult to see how each person put their heart and soul into their writes. I've read through most already and have found them to be deserving of praise. I congratulate all the winners and applaud their passionate poems.

I didn't participate for that very reason Anne Lise - people put their heart and souls into their poems - I feel I don't know what to say to the people to 'congratulate' them when they must feel so disappointed. Thee are other contests open now I may write poems for but not submit to the contest for the exact same reason:-) A great blog:-) Hugs jan xx

I support you in being brave and honest, Anne Lise. I did participate in the this contest, and along with the other 35 HM winners, I am sure we were all disappointed. We all put our hearts and souls along with many hours into these poems. There were many beautiful entries which I read among these, and they all deserved better than a flat HM among so many. My heartfelt congratulations to all of you on the list. Sandra
