Contest Description
Prizes for First through Third
This contest is open to everyone, including those who won prizes in my previous contests. The first-place winner will receive a wooden treasure chest with a piece of genuine gemstone jewelry inside. Jewelry will be awarded to second and third-place winners.
I’m looking for limericks about the ocean, its creatures and its myths. Entries may be new or old, as long as they meet the following criteria:
-
Entries cannot exceed two verses.
-
To place high in the contest, adhere to Soup’s definition of Limericks.
-
Limericks may be about any sea-related topic, legendary or based on fact.
-
Below your poem, include your ring size (if known) and your favorite color.
Prizes for men are available but if you would prefer to win a prize for a lady in your life, you may tell us her favorite color and/or ring size if you know them. If not, just put “Gift for a Lady” below your poem.
This contest is dedicated to the memory of late Souper Tim Ryerson. In March 2010, I held a Limerick contest for “Sea Tales.” Tim was one of the top winners and he gave us the following yarn, inspired (of course) by the movie “Jaws”:
Brody and Quint
This old sea rig is swamped and don’t float
I TOLD you we’d need a bigger boat!
Now you are HIS prize
Sure ain’t no surprise
That you’re fish food, you hard-headed goat!
Entries will be judged for humor and creativity. Don’t choose “Sea Tales” as your title – make your title original and catchy.
FYI - Definition of a limerick: Limericks have verses of five lines. Lines 1, 2 and 5 must rhyme with each other have the same number of syllables (between 7 and 10). Lines 3 and 4 must rhyme with each other and have the same number of syllables (between 5 and 7). Meeting the Soup’s meter description will be a plus, but meter is not required.
