I was born and raised in northern California in the land of the glorious redwoods. My father worked in the lumber industry and my brother and I had a simple but wonderful childhood. Off to the big city to become a nurse and all these years later I still am. I was married for many years, have 2 grown boys and 2 young grandsons..Jordan and Elliot. Me proud? You betcha..it truly is the best thing about growing older. On my own now and enjoying all that I can cram into my life. I love music.. am a life long member of The Friends of Jose Carreras..poetry and music are my loves.I am a technaphobe..so bear with me while I figure this all out.

I Have A Headache

Blog Posted by Barbara Gorelick: 2/25/2011 6:07:00 AM

Please tell me I'm not the only one that has a migraine from an "information" overload. Senryu vs Haiku, cut lines--- meter--- feet--foot--Capitals--no capitals--refrains--envoys--princes--humor---rhyme..on and on it goes..turn around three times and fall down!
Just kidding, but I can see why folks choose a favorite form and pretty much stick with it....Personally I like the short forms..expecially Brian Strand's footle.. direct and to the point.

the soup
great group    ---And not a punctuation mark in sight..

Or how about the great haiku vs Senryu debate

big fight
can't write

And now

good night
sleep tight...I've got to go..there are men at the door with my new white jacket....

At one point I did not like poetry unless it rhymed and now years later I am learning new forms some I like some not. If you love something and are comfortable stay or stick with it as I see nothing wrong in being who you are or want to be. God Bless Phyl

I know what you mean Barbara, There are so many different forms of poetry and some of them are very difficult! But every now and then I like to try a new one, just to say I tried it!~Tirzah~

Cute blog Barbara, how I keep the migraine away with all the contests, I write for, is to focus on only one at a time, so my mind is uncluttered, or so I think, ha ha... but I disagree with sticking to a fav form, there are so many forms of poetry, why would you do that, although of course we will always have our comfort zone, for me it is "narrative" because I am a rambling storyteller, haiku and senryu debates have been going on since the beginnings of writing them and that does give me a headache. In the end, I write whats in my soul for me first, and those who see/feel the beauty in my words second~~

I'm with Francine, I prefer simple poetry. But I do value that there are poets like Debbie and Andrea, amongst others who like to take us to another level. I shall stay in my box until I feel comfortable to exit it. Have a great weekend all....:)

I agree most with Joyce. If ya think like the Japanese, go at it. hahaha. If not, oh well. But also it's interesting to at least know what the modern haiku are all about. As I told Robb the other day, I think there should be two categories of them! Barbara,I really love your last little poem here. I am having much stress in my life right now, and that one suits me perfectly (suits me, get it?) and footles are awesome!!

I have chosen to skip a few contests as they are too much like a high school class assignment and I have entered the ones where it just says write what you want about subject , I am at a loss to come up with my next contest as I have been unable to download a picture, oh well I will come up with something else eventually

Yes!! I too have refilled a few bottles of aspirin since trying to stick to the "form" rules. I am fine learning the proper forms, however, I wonder sometimes if too much overload on rules, cuts, meter, feet, etc. might stifle our creativity just a little....I do know that the first poetry I ever posted here reveals how misguided I was in the beginning...however, maybe more fun to write! :)

And I would just as soon leave the haiku to the Japanese, I can't think that way. But everyone to his own. I am trying to think of a new contest. Joyce
