His Funeral - Judith Angell Meyer's Blog

I was born in Des Moines, Iowa. During the war Mom and my sister and I lived in Mason City until Dad came home. Then back to Des Moines. Graduated High School at Topeka High in Topeka, Kansas, and then went right to work for Hallmark Cards in the Litho Art Department. This proved to be better than a college education in art. Met and married my husband in Topeka, then moved to Staten Island, NY to take over De Jong's Bakery, the family business. We ended up in Colorado, bought a new bakery and settled down to raise our four kids and a menagerie of critters on a 15 acre homestead. For the most part, these were wonderful and fun filled years. Then I lost my husband of thirty-seven and a half years, January 1, 1998. Happy New Year.... It just hasn't been the same since, and a fair amount of my poetry reflects this transition in my life.

I have always drawn and painted for pleasure, to tell small stories, but I also have always written down my feelings. Sometimes when I couldn't find the words to say them out loud, or when I was filled with joy or frustration, writing set the feelings in order. (I am famous for having the right words to say the next day after the wrong words were already said!)

Locally I am a member of the Greeley Poetry Club, and the Greeley Art Association. These are fun groups and has flowered some good friendships.

I am a watercolorist of wildlife and Americana subjects. If you are interested, here is the link to my website and blog.

His Funeral

Blog Posted:4/14/2008 10:43:00 PM

I cannot believe that a month has gone by already since my last post. I'm sorry about that and will try to do better. However, I'll be in a marithon for the next 3 weeks to complete the last of the third adoption book. But I'll try.

The title is odd here, but it is the title of a poem I wrote in honor of Hans' 68th birthday, April 9, 2008. It is a limerick. Actually I don't like limericks. Seldom read one I liked. However, when I started this poem, it sort of began to fit the meter of the limerick, so I ran with it. Once I checked the rules for a limerick, it went pretty fast. So ...

"His Funeral"
That he planned his funeral is factual
And being a prankster quite actual
He prerecorded his voice
So when we kneeled on the joist
He said, "Hi there! Don't I look natural."
.

.
This has been getting a lot of good and fun reviews. And the fun part is that this really was something he talked about doing. He used to laugh and laugh at the thought of someone coming up to his casket during the viewing and hearing him say that. Sometimes he would think of another phrase to add, but this one was his favorite. He never got as far as actually recording his voice, but he really enjoyed planning it!
I want to take this time to thank you one and all for your wonderful comments on my Limerick, and on my featured poem, "Don't Blink; A fast and Sad Tale" It means so much to check my mail and find another Souper friend saying something about my poetry. I am marathon-ing right now to finish the third book on adoption, but will get back to viewing and commenting on all your work too.
.
There has been another snow or two since the St. Patty's day snow. One about 3" and very, very wet. Was the first real moisture we had this spring so far. Today was 77 degrees. Brought out buds on the tulips and the graphyesenth.
.
My son Hans has been working on Mom and Dad's old camper, and it is running like a top. Now for all the little nuisence quirks. Like the gas tank gauge not working. Worked fine when the engine didn't work, but not now that the engine does. Go figure. It will take a little time to find all the little stuff. Going to have to look for an owner's manual for the camper part. Hope I can find one on line. Wouldn't want to do something wrong starting the heater or the fridge etc..
.
I am looking forward to loading up my art and writing supplies, camera's and laptop and go someplace quiet to draw or write. Where I plan to go probably won't have internet service, but oh well! I'll just have to "rough it." I'm expecting that Gizmo will get quite used to his new and small home. We'll have a good time I'm sure.
.
Time for bed me thinks. See you the next time I get around to it.

Thank you Shar, for the Happy Birthday. Wish he could know all the support he still has. I'll be taking the camper to the mountain valley where his ashes are and enjoy the place he loved to camp and hunt over the years. I assure you the camper will be enjoyed. ~J~

Yes, Vince, he had a really fun sense of humor. I had to laugh, I don't think my attitude would have been any different than your wife's. But we ended up settling on cremation, and on that new journey. Thank you for sharing your sense of humor! ~J~

If we actually believe, then we should be celebrating the start of a new journey. The man had a great sense of humor. I once joked about having "See You Later, Alligator" by Bill Haley played at mine and my wife said she'd have me cremated before the mortician got there. Have a great day, Judith. Vince
