I was born in Des Moines, Iowa. During the war Mom and my sister and I lived in Mason City until Dad came home. Then back to Des Moines. Graduated High School at Topeka High in Topeka, Kansas, and then went right to work for Hallmark Cards in the Litho Art Department. This proved to be better than a college education in art. Met and married my husband in Topeka, then moved to Staten Island, NY to take over De Jong's Bakery, the family business. We ended up in Colorado, bought a new bakery and settled down to raise our four kids and a menagerie of critters on a 15 acre homestead. For the most part, these were wonderful and fun filled years. Then I lost my husband of thirty-seven and a half years, January 1, 1998. Happy New Year.... It just hasn't been the same since, and a fair amount of my poetry reflects this transition in my life.

I have always drawn and painted for pleasure, to tell small stories, but I also have always written down my feelings. Sometimes when I couldn't find the words to say them out loud, or when I was filled with joy or frustration, writing set the feelings in order. (I am famous for having the right words to say the next day after the wrong words were already said!)

Locally I am a member of the Greeley Poetry Club, and the Greeley Art Association. These are fun groups and has flowered some good friendships.

I am a watercolorist of wildlife and Americana subjects. If you are interested, here is the link to my website and blog.

SAA Meeting Wednesday

Blog Posted:2/15/2008 12:41:00 PM

Wednesday was a beautiful day here in Colorado. The temperature actually got up to 68 degrees in Denver. I drove down for a meeting with fellow collegues and members of The Society of Animal Artists. This was the 3rd annual meeting, and we are sharing more and more useful information. They are an enthusiastic group who really get me excited about doing more, and compliments from the big shooters mean so much. I'll be looking to have a piece of my own in the small works show this fall at the Wildlife Experience in Parker, Colorado.

On the way home coming east on HWY 7, I was delayed about 30 minutes because of a bad accident. It is a really bad intersection. Traveling east you come to a railroad underpass, and immediately beyond the bridge is a cross road. Colorado Blvd. actually. And at the crossroad there is a traffic light. But going east it is hard to see the light around the bridge. The crossroad is completely blind. There were EMT's and an ambulance came to the rescue. I was too far back to see much, but the driver was still in the car heading east through that intersection, and the other one was off in the ditch. Both cars were probably totaled. It is so hard to see someone hurt in an accident. I wish them quick recovery.

The rest of the way home was uneventful until I got there, and of course Gizmo thought I had completely abandoned him. To make up for it I took him with me to get some groceries.

Hard to believe that I have gone from raising German Shepherds for the blind dog institute, then a wonderful Rotty, to this little slip of a dog. But when he came into my life, he filled a hole that I didn't really know that I had. He is a wonderful companion ... and brat.

I'd best get back to my illustrations for now. Thanks for listening, and I'll talk to you soon.

~J~

Well, here you ago Shar. I posted the first set of drawings on my Blog. Enjoy. -- As for Gizmo, small dog; large shoes! He was 8 1/2 lbs when I got him. Is now about 11 lbs. And this after raising German Shepherds for years, then Rotty's. I'm teased a lot! ~J~

Okay Shar ... I'll do that. I don't know if there would be any problem with posting the drawings prior to their publication. But I'll find out. (Enough of them are in print now that they, at least, should be okay.) Gizmo thanks you for the awwwww .... Oh, and to give you an idea of his size, he is curled up in my son's shoe! ~J~

Awww, what a face on that precious little Gizmo! Too cute. Judith you should post some of your illustrations as you blog, if you can. Would love to see them. Take care. Love, Shar
