What Would You Rather Write?

Blog Posted:3/28/2016 10:10:00 PM

What would you rather write,

a book of good poems or one poem that's considered a masterpiece?

And then if you had the ability to write masterpieces, why just stop at a book of mediocre poems? It would be like Shakspeare, after writing his most famous piece, did a few couplets. Say what?

For me, I couldn't chose between the two choices. Maybe a book full of masterpieces. Who would want to stop at one masterpiece and just one bit of glory? Not me.

What a masterpiece is... that depends on YOUR opinion. Some people might think that Picasso made masterpieces, while other critics might think he sucks. Same with Great Gatsby and Jane Austen. Some decide they are, some decide they aren't. Again, it depends on your opinion. At least, that is what I think.

Who decides and how is something considered a masterpiece? or is it the 'marmite' question just a matter of personal choice! .......or as I point out below .... is it irrelevant anyway ?

Being labeled a masterpiece is, as stated, a matter of taste and all subjective I suppose. I can only give examples of what I consider to be masterpieces: The Grand Canyon, A Rose, a Michael Jordan dunk, a champion body builders physique, The snow when it sits just so on a bough. I've read some masterpieces here at the soup, check out Tatyana Carney, tony bush or john Heck poems, they have a few sprinkled throughout their anthologies I'm certain...and of course any newborn(even the ugly ones are masterpieces....o'k I'm getting sappy...your turn

Neither one for me. Just write, write and write like there's no tomorrow!! (well, if the masterpiece meant I was famous for life and got big money for it, I would choose that one out of the two)

Then again perhaps another 'driving force' could be the 'impressions' from outside that compels us to attempt express how that impression impacts within us ..ie as with Monet and his garden and light at differing times of day.

Like the many images in your ekphrasis Cyndi ,especially the 'custard glourish' ! I lived in the 'old' Hamburg for few years in the early 50's.

Exactly! It's a compulsion! I had decided to focus on my fiction, and I have a short story fully outlined (waiting for my daughter to return to school, so I can finish it) and yet... poetry calls to me. Pointless to resist that call. I MUST write poetry. I thought you'd like this, Brian...www.ekphrastic.net/ekphrastic/monets-mirage-by-cyndi-macmillan-- MONET!

Of course Anthony your question really prompts ..why do we as poets write..In my case ,like many creative arts, it is a response to some 'inner ' driving force.A need to express, if you will, in the first instance,as with the art movement 'Expressionism' .Some of them became commercially famous, unlikely for most of us here on PS, but..the value of this means of easy expression has only come to pass with the arrival of the net.

I don't know if my poems are considered 'good' I am just happy my husband's cancer kick started me into writing and that my musings get read - to classify a poem as 'a masterpiece' is subjective what appeals to one does not appeal to everyone but I have written a few poems I am very proud of:-) hugs Jan xx

Both. Ha! It takes most poets a great deal of craft to write a true masterpiece... and in the process they can write dozens of books filled with good poetry. Then, after the best poem is written, the poet will continue to write, fill many more pages, write more books. Either way, the poet will keep writing until the pen is pulled from her/his dead hand. What poet only writes one poem and then STOPS? What a strange creature that would be, and certainly not related to any poet I've either met or read. Cheers. Good blog!
