Time passed away in the dark,
the bedside clock fell silent
it was never much of a talker.
Below the curtained window
snow had numbed the night,
ill at ease my body stretched
as if seeking a way out of its mind
a place it inhabits
when there is only one room,
to turn around in.
Did the clock
die on the tic or the toc?
These are the sort of questions
to struggle with when it's too early
to actually struggle.
Switched on the lamp -
the one in my head.
Accumulations of amputated dreams
wriggled back into the shadows.
I shake the clock
some residual moments
slipped limply through cold fingers.
When the light freezes,
when dawn breaks its brittle shell,
snow humps (so far unseen),
will resemble the many recumbent hours,
but of course there's no way
to measure those hours now.
It could be days
before the snow melts
or until eyes unstick themselves
from all this rumpled mess
of being.

Orange peels litter my desk,
sprinkling sparkling droplets of orange oil
over my unfinished love sonnet
A croissant is over there,
I just remembered.
It soaks my slam poem,
which I shall never perform,
with buttery heaviness
Jelly beans, blue, red, green, white,
to be found on the remote island of
my travel diary, as profuse with blank verse
as the ocean is profuse with fishes
A peanut-butter sandwich, open-faced,
refuses to unstick from the sestina
I have given up on finding proper words
for
I need to clean up my desk.

It's like a noose around my neck
Strapped in a splintered chair
Cast in plaster, stuck like glue
Can't move anywhere
Strangled with monotony
Drowning in routine
Round and round this hamster wheel
A banal race machine
I want to take a hammer
Raise it in the air
Smash this plaster, free myself
Breathe in my own air
Want to cut these straps that bind me
Unstick this binding glue
Remove this noose that holds me still
And get away from you.
I'm summoning my courage
I need to break away
Fight the stark complacency
That holds my soul at bay.

You take the words out my mouth,
I'm tripping on my tongue
In circles.
I'm getting dizzy,
And I'm all caught up
On your love; it's lethal.
Oh I,
Am a sucker for blue eyes and grinning teeth.
Can you unstick your lips?
I want to hear beneath.
Take off your dress.
I want to feel your skin,
I want to begin to see
Beneath it.
Take off your dress.
I'm a little curious,
I'm new at this,
Can't you tell.
You take the air out my lungs,
I'm choking on my tongue
I'm purple.
Oh you're a bad broke bandit
Stealing my love,
Like tax from the people.
And I,
Am a sucker for
Good lies through grinning teeth.
Can you unstick your lips?
I wanna hear beneath.
Take off your dress.
I wanna feel your skin,
I want to begin
To see beneath it.
Take off your dress.
Take off your dress.

MOTHER’S LITTLE KILLERS
She hates them, the unguent power
Which sticks her fairy wings together
Making impossible the ivory tower
Of disinterested passion, the if and whether
Of generic names, the ultimate aloneness.
The honest answer is to unstick
The loathsome epithets accompanying the mess
Let her soul free with a lexographic brick
As she goes on her desert train to limbo -
Grant her freedom to ride into the dusk
Without turning her into a soulless bimbo,
Pills shedding the epigrammatic husk,
Cavorting in the lunar satellite,
A spaced monkey too drugged to fight

So unexpected
How my shoe collided
A sweet little piece of gum
On the ground
Never thought i'd find it
Wasn't looking.
But unlike the gum,
I'd never want
To unstick you
From my heart.

she seems like a saint in my dark moments
as she graces me with her gentle smile
because her nomadic heart came to rest for
a butterfly's moment within my grasp
and with noble intent i heart and soul to her attentions
so she unsticks my head
with her own road of good intentions
she is tender in my wilderness
placing small acts of cataclysm in my path
to dislodge my mud filled head
and with her devices nailed to my mind
it is easier to think so i think
so with her delighted mind she tinkers
with my comfort zone
trying to find the greasy spoon
that i eat my metaphysical meals with
leaves me hungry for words
when it comes time to put pen to paper
my head full of mud
grapple with the notions of her divinity
but the weight of thinking too much
keeps me from doing freestyle take to wing
so it is me that must unstick
from her influences
and her rubber band heart
that keeps bouncing back

A flash point in ocean
becomes omnivorous
eating the boats.
The sharks unstick and
sleep on waves
for another abeyance.
Sitting on the wheels
of a tank,
men waited for the revolution to scoop
a scorched motherhood
where the children
were becoming missiles.
The light moves in circle
to find the mirrors
on a blue horse.

Zurrip Zurrip
rip it, pull it, yank it free
peel your velcro heart from me;
stick it to lashes
stick it to hair
stick it to a love that's barely there.
Zurrip Zurrip
fine job you did to zip me in
a velcro heart plays to win
loop it in my mind
lock it on my tongue
hook it on my love, then I guess you're done.
Zurrip Zurrip
the bristles break
the more a velcro heart does take
unstick it from my future
unstick it from my past
rip it from me openly be sure to do it fast.
Zurrip Zurrip
the taste of love is is never so tart
until you find yourself fastened to a velcro heart.

in the shop with hardware and bits of wood
can make almost any man feel useful, good
a screwdriver, a drill, some papered sand
away from day-to-day, simply out of demand
just tinkering around with piddling things
the easy satisfaction messin' 'round brings
no major renovation, or building earthworks
just little improvements, near anonymous perks
unsqueaking a hinge, maybe unstick a drawer
fittingly better is what tinkering's for
whether it's the thing of attention being repaired
or the man doing the labor, it's hard to declare
so too, it can be with words on page or a screen
to ensure understanding, say exactly what you mean
a glued letter, word oiled, or nailing a phrase
brings the writer satisfaction of all he surveys
so I continue to tinker a little bit more
on a few couplet lines, with no guarantor
that I'll illicit from you, oh diligent reader
understanding or joy, from this rambling meter
but that is a small sideline to most of my tinkers
it's time tinkering matters to meandering thinkers
