Premium Member Beautiful Shine of Faith

Believe you can and you're halfway there" - Theodore Roosevelt
****************************************************************

                                         Beautiful Shine of Faith

When swirls of sadness swamp the heart
And vile men hold lovers apart,
When clouds of anguish grip the mind
And one`s path in life one can`t find,

When the spirit is at low tide
And no one can serve as a guide,
It`s time faith in oneself to light
And seek its shine that`s sparkling bright.

Ode To the Hyphen

In days of old so I’m told Theodore Roosevelt did explain he had no use for the hyphen in any American name.
And now one can see how the hyphen such a tiny grammatical mark has pushed us apart.
We are all Americans who may hail from distant shores but now this is our home worth protecting and fighting for.
Do not let the hyphen define you ,where you once were is now behind you.
Let us join together one and all for we are Americans

Titch

So easy to call him Titch.
He's just a tiny teddy-bear.
Yet I, a grown-up man,
feel a strange affection.

Affection, yes, for something fluffy,
and all you can do is look at it,
talk to it – or should I say “him”? –
and leave it on a shelf, table, desk.

Ah, yes, so much history:
Theodore Roosevelt.
He hated the name Teddy,
but folk would call him that.

So thank you, Theodore.
I will not call you Teddy.
You hated it, I know,
so this teddy we call Titch.

Our Political Divide

Each time a problem, of any kind, rears its head,
the establishment quickly looks for someone to blame.
Efforts should be directed toward problem solving instead,
but one party or the other goes all out to disclaim.

No matter what happens it’s the other party’s fault,
they’ll appoint a commission and hold kangaroo court.
Then ravage each other with a constant verbal assault,
while distorting the truth, to the media they resort.

Some wonder why many politicians aren’t respected,
they're adept at speaking from both sides of their mouth.
They cover their backsides and the people are oft neglected,
while our country is invaded by those from the south.

Being Picked On?

Unfortunate things happen, to each, in life,
but are never sent our way to punish us.
They're to test our faith and will make us stronger,
and that, dear reader, I consider a plus.

Our first impression shouldn't be, “oh, why me,”
and blaming God should never be in our thought.
Both good and bad things happen to all people,
so at times, in life, happenings will be fraught.

Premium Member The Rough Riders

The U.S. was fighting against Spain over their colonial policies with Cuba,
And Asist. Secretary of the Navy, Theodore Roosevelt resigned his position just to join the volunteer cavalry. One of three regiment raised in 1898 for the Spanish-American War was the 1st U.S. Volunteer Cavalry fondly known as
The Rough Riders. Roosevelt recruited a diverse group of cowboys, miners, law enforcement officials and Native American Indians.

Roosevelt and Colonel Leonard Wood trained and supplied the men in San Antonio, Texas so well that The Rough Riders were allowed into action unlike many other volunteer companies and they sailed for Santiago de Cuba from Tampa on June 13,1898. There they joined The Fifth Corps, another highly trained, well supplied and enthusiastic group of excellent soldiers from the regular army.

The Rough Riders saw combat at Las Guassmas on the way to Santiago .
In his after action report JULY 4,1898 Roosevelt wrote that of the 490 men he led into battle at San Juan Hill 80 were killed and wounded and another half dozen were MIA.

An Opinion: by Tom

Congress has become a valley of vipers,
each person has an agenda of their own.
From the halls of congress some lurk as snipers,
sharing ideas causing others bemoan.

Opinion polls show us that they're not trusted,
many voters trade their vote for something free.
Each morning's news leaves me highly disgusted,
with most of their doings many disagree.

This election cycle hasn't brought out the best,
from the very start many had no appeal.
Promises made will soon be put to the test,
promising free stuff most always seals the deal.

Political Snakes

A snake never feels threatened,
because it has the innate ability to camouflage itself,
It blends in with it’s surroundings for self preservation.
But no matter how often it sheds its skin,
A snake remains a snake.

When they call the roll in the senate,
the senators do not know whether to answer “present” or “not guilty.”

Do you know why they're called “Teddy Bears”
After Theodore Roosevelt, because Teddy cared
A captured bear, he refused to kill
A kindness remembered still
Quite “unsportsmanlike” he was heard to declare

Shangrila Is Vanishing

THE DREAM HAS BEEN
LOST.

SHANGRILA IS
VANISHING.

LOOKING OUT ON THE
NATURAL LANDSCAPE,

THE TAKERS ARE
DESTROYING THE LAND.

ONE BY ONE, THE
GREED TAKES OVER,

BLINDING THEM FROM
CARE TAKING MOTHER
EARTH.

GREED HAS NO
BOUNDARIES,

NO CONSCIOUSNESS.

WE MUST REMEMBER,

WE ARE CARE TAKERS
OF THE EARTH,

ON A TRANSITORY
JOURNEY

OF CREATION AND SELF
DISCOVERY,

NOT DESTRUCTION.

LET US CREATE A NEW AND
SUSTAINABLE STORY FOR
PLANET EARTH.

Wish

I wish I could have
    seen Theodore Roosevelt
Eugene Debs, Calvin Coolidge
    speak their minds
I wish I could travel back
in time to see Daniel Webster,
meet Lewis and Clark
    I wish time was malleable
And that we could travel through it
to see J.R.T. Tolkien, the Lubavither Rebbe,
Martin Luther King
But you and i are trapped
    in 2013
Let's try to make the best of it
Since so far as we know
The clcock moves in one direction
"The moving finger writes - and having writ - moves on"

Wish

I wish I could have
seen and heard Theodore Roosevelt ,
Eugene Debs and Calvin Coolidge
    speak their minds
I wish I could travel back
in time to see Daniel Webster,
meet Lewis and Clark
   I wish time was malleable
And that we could travel back
to see Chaim Potok - J.R.R. Tolkien,
the Lubavitcher rebbe, Martin Luther King
But friend - you and I are trapped in the early 21st century
       Let's try to make the
most of it
For as the Old Tentmaker knew "The moving finger writes - and having writ moves on....

American Beauty

We often hear America the
Beautiful being played
somewhere…

The Bald Eagle is the national
symbol of the United States…

There are many monuments
and memorials that play tribute
 to many, Vietnam, World
War II, Korean, Tomb of the
 Unknown Soldier, Iwo Jima,
 Franklin and Theodore Roosevelt
 and so many more…

There is Mount Rushmore,
Washington, Jefferson, Lincoln,
Pentagon Memorials…

We also have a National Flower
that one being the Rose!

Memorial Day and every day
 remember all those Monuments,
Memorials and there meanings,
never forget all those who
 have given there life for
 our Country…
