My Aunt Joan Was a Madcap

My aunt Joan was a madcap
And she sat down on my lap
When I creaked
She was freaked
Honored me with slime and slap

Lessons

Old Man Bianco his vocal voice
stripped of all it’s octave choice
creaked and crowed in age and vice
“Liquor, tobacco, you pay the price!”

My Age Creeping Up

yesterday laughed
my bones creaked so
my age creeping
I was shocked; when did this happen?
moreover, who is this old one?
my age creeping

Fiddlesticks

There was a young man bought a pangolin
but thought it was a mandolin
to be played like a violin
he tipped its scales 'til they creaked
tweaked its tail so it squeaked
and named the bow Anne Bowleyn

Why You No Work

…Money…in a voice that rustled.
No sir, I do not have any money.
How about getting a job?
…Change…in a voice that creaked.
Sorry sir, I don’t make the rules.
How about running a campaign?
…Help…in a voice that trailed.
Sir, how do I do that?

Down the Block from Prosperity

   silverware tarnished
     forks absent some teeth
   plates chipped at the edges
     set of cups incomplete

   the table wobbled and creaked
     like them, sad and bleak...
   down the block from prosperity
of which they hadn't a peek

Staircase

Bare wood creaked
a hand polished rail glistened
the texture of the risers
caressed her feet
each step
a staircase stanza
an elegant entrance
ballet-like
balancing
cold ground
a short dance
and relief

First Time Nanna

my first seduction
was with a bowl of stale feta,
a tragic affair with a refrigerator
that wouldn't shut.
crumbs scattered like apology,
i whispered sweet nothings,
"eat me, make me whole”
the hinge creaked,
and i poured out,
wanderlust in the cheap cheese,
another unloved abandon, me.

Snow

A blanket of morning snow engulfed the town
like a luminous south sea pearl
stretched out
mirroring its watery home,
as the villagers slept,
tight in the warmth of the mattress
that creaked like an ancient schooner,
and they awoke to see with faceless dreams
that winter within themselves,
kindled by December lights.

Three Toed Jack

Tall pine
log line

Big Jack's
long axe

Swung hard
no guard

Thick trunk
housed skunk

Tree creaked
skunk freaked

Skunk sprayed
Jack paid

Axe head
blood red

Jack's cost
toes lost

Tale goes
two toes

Jack's fame
new name!

Christmas Eve

When Simon fell asleep on Christmas Eve.
Dreaming of presents that Santa would leave.
He soon stirred, when his door squeaked.
Open- eyed, as floorboards creaked.
Now he knows Santa, is not make-believe.

The Neighborhood Haunted House

Accepting my costumed friends dare, I cautiously pushed through the weeds to the unlit dilapidate porch. Before I could knock, the door creaked open.

"Come on in.

      We've been wait- ing for

you." Croaked the emaciated little girl with the basso profundo voice.

Something pushed me from behind ...

Heat Wave

It's ninety eight degrees
in Jersey,
your hug felt limp,
sweaty,
and forced,
like the old air conditioner
that creaked to life
when you made us coffee,
looking into my eyes,
just to show
you could be sober,
at least for a New York minute,
letting me know
a happy future wasn't an option
and love was only real in movies,
but at least
you made me laugh.

Reflection

Vacant eyes
of wandering mind
Crooked neck
of broken road
I found myself
lost at home

Stained by glass
Splintered by bone
The wood creaked
My face stone

Mocked by self
Driven by pain
Pity was fate
Solace in vain

Echoes of life
Remnants of death
The stale air spoke
My last breath

Mirror, mirror
On my wall
Tell me
Who will miss me
When you’re gone

Thicker Than Water

I pushed at the open door, there was no sound,no noise, just darkness all around.Dust filtered my nostrils,a mustiness of lost years inhabited my senses.A loose floorboard creaked as I headed for the stairwell, the aroma of her Chanel provoked memories of my living hell.A tear of self-pity congealed in the dirt as I switched on the light."Hello son,...I knew you'd be back...He's gone..."

Shh

Shh…
Shuttered the stifling air
Confining her innocence
Clinging to a teddy bear

Shh…
Ruffled the blanket of lies
Concealing her trembling
The lids to her cries

Shh…
Echoed the corners of the room
Beneath the glowing ceiling
Of a neon moon

Shh…
Creaked the rays of flight
Unlocking morning
Pardoning night

Jesus, she whispered
Lowering her weary head
Do you know why my father
Comes to my bed

MY LAST N-A

I pushed at the open door
no sound
just darkness inside.
Dust filtered my
nostrils,
    a mustiness of lost years
inhabited my senses.

A loose floorboard
creaked in the stairwell,
the aroma
of her Chanel provoked memories
of my
living hell.
A tear of self-pity congealed
in the dirt at my feet

I switched on the light
"Hello son
     I knew you'd be back;
He's gone..."

Meeting

Moon peeped through the treetops, tiptoed to a window, knocked softly and hushed to keep his promise. ‘Chuck, chuck, chuck, ' a gecko wished; a bat dropped an oozing mango and flapped from the backyard; a curlew screamed a welcome note; a door creaked open, and they shadowed the moon.
Robert Browning's "Meeting at Night" inspired me when writing this piece.

The Visitor

He pushed at the open door
no sound
just darkness inside.
Dust filtered his
nostrils,
    a mustiness of lost years
inhabited his senses.

A loose floorboard
creaked in the stairwell,
the aroma

Squeaky Wheel

There was a wheel that squeaked Not a sound in the world like it My senses were surely peaked Drove me crazy, gave me a fit The air in the tires leaked No piece of it worked, not a bit The whole bike when moved creaked I could do nothing but come sit Sound of the wheel sure freaked So I got off my bike and quit

Nocturnal Nature Gripped

callous clouds cremating
hoisted horizon hibernating
mystic mirror birthed
meagre mimick mounted
pulpy punctures lent
lanky lust wretched

bounty boulevard bruised
humpty-dumpty craving cruise
perforated pilgrims puked

sassy similitude seeped'n
vulnerable voluptuous trees
dark dribbles creaked

airy aura tripped
nocturnal nature gripped.

Swan Song

His skin was like loose Saran wrap that no amount of topical cream could smooth away its wrinkles. His skeletal bones creaked, muffled by an old squeaking rocking chair he gently, rhythmically rocked to singsong poetry he wrote nearly fifty odd years ago. Each iambus spoken aloud curiously matched his rocking: the short syllables went backward the longer ones ever forward. Suddenly his recital stopped and the chair went still and silent.
