Twenty-nine times to stumble out,

Spend half an hour sitting in the lobby,
Of the local veterans hospital,
Watch the parade of duty and sacrifice,
Coming and going to appointments.
Veterans young and old,
Many on crutches, or in wheelchairs, missing limbs.
One day I say a young vet with an old vet in tow.
They were both in wheelchairs.
To me, that lobby is a sacred place....

it takes care of the city's sorrows,
makes you tear up traffic tickets,

climb a tree and curse authority.
Just yesterday an old lady came.
She suffers from not knowing 
how to be a girl anymore.
She's there,

she has a cane in her lap 
and in her rheumatic hands
