the tall redwood trees
burnt, carved, hollowed for shelter
still green & standing tall
like a redwood tree
I feel tormented and saddened
ignoring hardships
standing here for centuries
sharing calm & serenity
wish I could be like a redwood grove aged with wisdom
I feel like a giant overshadowing my misfortunes
sharing my thoughts and giving peace and happiness to all in world

Redwoods cloaked in green
home to golden birds, singing
up in true blue skies
So ancient and prodigious
hailing the stars and the moon
Redwood rosy morn
redwood soaked in the sunset
with silent breezes
Lord of the dark green forest
still in its vigorous youth

The Ballad of John Muir Woods
I squint at the splendid morning sun
golden filtered bright rays conveyed.
Speaking they say, sit, little one
rest a spell in our noble shade.
I squint at this forest of titans
sitting, I wait for more whisperings.
They weigh my thoughts across the breeze
you are part of our air, they sing.
Youth returns in kaleidoscopes
sprightly green patterns swiftly shift.
Tinged golden from morning’s new hope
their harmony in sea breezes drift.
These conifers sprout from stump and boast
wildness, our need is undisputed.
Redwoods, the glory of Cali’s coast
engage me and call me beloved.

The Redwoods
I wish I could bath in the forest
And jump high among the redwoods
Just to see fifteen hundred years of history
I wish I could hover among the tree tops
And escape the scars of time
I wish I could live near the sky
And witness the world unfold
Like a marbled murrelet
I wish I could sail the seas
And rest in these trees
I would travel in low light hours
Casting silhouettes on the sky
And with urgency of life
Point feather and fly
I wish I could brave weather
And enemy in days endless
From wave to shore to tree
High above this marvel
Nestled in a redwood canopy

Beyond the grove of giant ferns,
The mossy path descends and turns
Toward the trunks of redwood trees,
Where mountains meet the dewy breeze.
Enveloped by the heavy fog,
The birds glide free across the bog
And burst into their cheerful calls
Over the chime of waterfalls.
In this abode the giants loom
With lilies at their roots in bloom.
Their will transcends both space and time,
Their thoughts cannot be set to rhyme.
When I return the gift of birth
And I am doomed to leave this earth,
My peaceful soul shall always be
Enchanted by this harmony.

As I stood beneath an ancient tree
The canyon beckoned me
Mushrooms, moss and ferns abound
They carpeted the spongy ground
Rough redwoods reached into the sky
Such majesty and wisdom; I often wondered why
The canopy, a firmament up into the sun
A meeting of the masters, rejoicing every one
Created for an endless life, nestled near the shore
Are there more like them? They couldn’t see the more
Huge roots held fast in fertile ground
They are talking; can you hear the sound?
Their branches whispered softly with the winding stream
Let them grow forever; let them live their dream

On hallowed ground this path pervades
As if by fate, alone I tread
To hear the whispered serenades
Of redwood song through timeless threads
From long forgotten centuries
Melodic echoes through the mist
A haunting hint of reverie
Perhaps a plea to coexist
If by chance you amble through
These auburn temples fringed with grace
A thoughtful pause - your cares adieu
The healing magic of this place

"to hold, as 'twere, the mirror up to nature" William Shakespeare, Hamlet, 1601
towering redwoods
forest dwellers born before Christ’s time on Earth
spreading arms to lofty heights
dwellings provided in hollow, cave-like trunks
wrap your spirit in the redwood cocoon
feel the cool, dark air
refreshing body and spirit
refuge from summer’s heat
speak to me, redwood tree,
tell me of times past
when Native Americans cherished the land
and Jesus preached in Galilee
out of body, one with the redwood
journeying through history
living in a time tunnel
where past meets present
trees that know what man has forgotten
ancient tribes with sacred values
surviving earth-changing cataclysms
surrounding us with secrets to share
if we dare
dwell within
this broad, mystical expanse
redwoods’ memories
