Meeting our New Neighbor

Where would she be? We asked her dad.
Wait. It’s her husband; his name is Chad.
He’s much older than she, fifty at least.
Where is our neighbor, young Charise?

She came to the door wearing curlers galore.
Oh look, she said, it’s the new neighbors next door.
She was holding a puppy, swinging silver hoops too.
Let’s see, you are Jane,

On Returning Leftover Peppermint to My Neighbor

Digestion liquesces peppermint. I chew
the leaves for both of us, an aftertaste

when stillness is an afterthought.
Dust gleams like the raised plastic on a debit card.

Winds seem to bank and then burst through a window
in a venetian blind-slatted sunshine;
bars slit across you on the floor.

Strangers make front entrances where shoes scuff the rug.
The briefest, jagged arcs

New Neighbor

He knocked and asked for some bottles of water,
he said that we both had the same Alma mater.
While quenching his thirst,
I was thinking the worst,
did he buy next door, or was he a house squatter?

The Old Neighbor

He visits for a while, out of the blue;
senile too, with no smile,
which had always been his style.
Straight up gin helps reconcile!

Jack’s wife is tired of swimming
She sits inside their camper in her teddy
Nursing a Bud light in a brown bottle
Wondering when he will return from his fishing

A neighbor friend of her husband stops by
Noting how gorgeous her legs are
He is embarrassed to see this kind of beauty
He looks away quickly

She is a casual beauty
Unaware of

He's a kind neighbor

He's a kind neighbor, rare to find these days
Helpful, respectful, giving in so many ways
All the while his wife he loves is sadly ailing
He provides day to day clearly, without failing 
Retired from a long working life, a thoughtful volunteer too
Carrying a sense of humor that will help you laugh and renew
He's a kind neighbor,

As we consider others
With more than a few objections
Can we unveil
Our own masked reflections?

As we review our brother
With an exaggerated disdain
Can we become cognizant
Of the true source of our pain?

As we inspect our neighbor
With ever ascending exasperation
Can we give pause and question
The root of our vexation?

As we give the mirror
Just one more searching glance

A Radiant Neighbor

Kim commandeers hallway sockets in her high-rise
with a microwave to reduce her electric
bills: frozen dinners cooked outside her apartment.

An icy day clouds the sun seen through a window
of the building. Kim's smile captures the sun
racing across the sky to crack its disc

on her face, her chin and cheeks, a cheese-melted heart.

Taking care of Meddlesome Maddie

Meddlesome Maddie liked to invade and intrude
A busybody with plenty of well-earned solitude
She tried to stick her spoon in her new neighbor’s biz.
He stopped her right away, and he was no kind of wiz.

When I reminded her that the Bible does tell
to love not only yourself, but your neighbor as well,
she said, "But Mister Tabor,
you're not my neighbor,
so, could you just kindly go to hell?"
