Premium MemberAvon by the Sea

I didn't pull my weight
The boss was really sore
He said "you're second rate
and I won't take it anymore."

He continued raving
On how I was misbehaving
Said my job was not worth saving
And so I longed for Avon
Avon by the sea

I must go back to Avon
Avon by the sea
When my lifeboat needs a haven
When my problems need a maven
This is where I need to be

There's a ten-mile barrier island
It's not that far away:
Where ospreys touch down majestically
and beach forests gently sway.

But also on the Jersey shore
are the roots that once made me,
In the little town of Avon,
and when all the walls are caving
and hunger turns to craving
I retreat to Avon,
Avon by the sea

I took the train last September
Got off at Asbury Park
Strode the miles of boardwalk
Had to stop at coming dark.

I had regrets, I shed a tear
Then I saw a dolphin at setting light
At Ocean Grove I sat on a pier:
And on the shore it seemed alright.

I've paid my dues, I made my plea
They say I was guilty in the first degree
Let me lose the past in Avon,
I'll fly in like an escaping raven
Look! My friends are wildly wavin'
in Avon by the sea.

Chris prompts his friend, Cyra
to help him win the
heart of his true love,
Roxy

Chris is easy on the eyes
a dreamy kinda guy
but as far as conversation goes
he’s got no game

Cyra articulates like no other,
a maven of expression
But visible impression?
Not so much

Chris plans the evening well,
standing under the spell of
Roxy’s second-story window
(taming butterflies)

Cyra too on the scene
is nowhere to be seen
as if hiding in a cloud
awaiting a cue

Chris tosses candied sweethearts
at her window, she finally awakens
Roxy’s appearance is captivating,
stirring Chris’s senses

Surrogate Cyra begins on cue
launching love-struck expressions
Roxy nearly swoons …
Chris starts coughing

Discerning the subterfuge
as coughing Chris chokes
Roxy beseechingly begs,
“Who are you? What is your name?”

Truth undisguised
Cyra promptly replies,
“Cyra … NO! I will not lie—
I am generative AI”

Roxy faints, befuddled
Chris’s words muddled
Thus ends this mad romp—
AI awaits a prompt

Premium MemberThe Last Organ Grinder

Bedraggled the old man sat, monkey on his lap.
However could he recover from this mishap?
Louts took his organ and attacked him with a bat.
Monkey on his lap, bedraggled the old man sat.

His old heart gutted, his mind totally wrenched.
Rain yesterday had left him quite drenched.
We are OK my darlin, to his monkey he muttered.
His mind totally wrenched, his old heart gutted.

The rooftop a safe haven, for he and his pet.
Not much chance of another organ, he will get.
He was an expert on the organ, a regular Maven.
For he and his pet, the rooftop was a safe haven.

He can still sing, dance and tap the old soft shoe.
He was the best organ grinder New York ever knew.
Shoes are worn, organ gone, his monkey is everything.
Dance and tap the old soft shoe, he can still sing.

Premium MemberTribute To An Un-Named Poetess

There's a lady whom I've never met
as enchanting as the stars,
I know this from her written words
and how she sets the bar.

Of excellence in ideas and thoughts
flowing through her veins
And the way she shares her loving heart
With others like a flame.

Burning bright and beautiful
with her pure, poetic voice
(While falling in love with a stranger
Is nothing but non-sense, of course).

She's got Arete' in Greek, they say
But stupendous works for me,
this fountain of truth and beauty abounds
like a caged bird set free.

Destined to live on the fringes
between all our poetic lines,
where boundaries are blurred and only our words
will outlive us in due time.

Yet still, I can't help but wonder
About this mysterious maven I found
Spreading her bliss as if a sweet kiss
might secretly find me somehow.

Transition

TRANSITION

Life is a stage
You crawl today, you walk tomorrow
You develop the wings to fly,
Until you go to the great gulf course in the sky

Life is a stage
You mumble today, you speak tomorrow
Then you have the voice to address the universe,
Until you are invited to the world of silence

Life is a stage
You are a boy today, a man tomorrow
Then you get the balls to play the game of pool,
Until you violate the 8-ball rule

Life is a stage
You are a neophyte today, a maven tomorrow
Then you get skill to impart humanity,
Until you terminate the earth treaty.

Maven

MAVEN

MAVEN
hauling notes as
raven

going
to Mars. Is life
growing

up in
the atmosphere’s
chagrin...

Desideratum

On the nights when drinks nomore abide,
Pushing the world aside,
A frantic search for freedom,
A place for rest, an Eden.

A gossamer of light,
To shelter me and keep me in blithe,
In desperation, for a haven
Of sweet liberty, need a maven.

In time you are regenerated,
A fresh new start, a sorry belated
In words you are found and lost
Forgiveness across my mind, it crossed.

A dwelling where I can rest,
When fretfulness is at recess,
I yearn for a place like so..
Where I can learn to live and grow.

A Swing In Heaven

A Swing in Heaven

 Swaying to the infinite maven
Where tides were talking to moon
 Oscillates back to Heaven
Glimpse of happiness gathered so soon

Closed my eyes to the serene silence
Heared a Hum indeed the string of violins
Estatic Heart jumped out of the cage
Living again nor broken neither filled with rage

Walking Winds whispered in my ears
As asked I gave up all my fears
While smile sneaked my teeth to cheer
My eyes were sparkling with tears

Swinging to the Heights
Back to the deepest sights
To the waters to the sky
I feel I fly
I fly so high

To the infinite Maven
Where cosmic energy filled my mind
I build a swing in Heaven
To sway and play rewind

All Hail God of War

all hail god of war
teach us not just how to win
but what to fight for

*this hai-ku was one entered in a hai-ku contest held by N.A.S.A., to get people interested in the "maven" mars mission. It was one of the poems chosen to accompany the space ship on a golden disk that would survive the harsh trip and environment, to become the first known poetry on mars.

Premium MemberBonding With Bond

What man would welcome the bonds of mortgage,
Drown in a long drink of boredom each night?
For celluloid loves we’d gladly forage,
Evil and despair we’d gallantly fight.
Childhood dreams put in permanent storage,
Follow villains into cowardly flight.
A life ordinary needs no courage,
Unlike courting harm to put the world right.

What woman would so crave stability,
She’d aspire to be a coupon maven,
Betroth herself to tame maternity,
For a rut no makeup can enliven,
Spurn the kiss of dapper virility,
Pass each tinselled day ever more craven?
A whole world resigned to mortality,
Thus chases life with double-o-seven.

Notes: Moe Howard's (of the Three Stooges) actual first name was Moshe.
'Nyuk, nyuk, nyuk' was a trademark line of Curly (3 Stooges.)
Berle is comedian: Milton Berle (aka 'Uncle Miltie').
'Egads zooks' is an exclamation my mother and others of her
   generation used to use (frequently).
'Wooly Bully' was a pop song by Sam the Sham and the Pharoahs,
released in 1965; it soared high on the Top-40 charts.

You'Re So Bourgeois

You’re so bourgeois,
it ain’t materialistically funny
You’re so smug, lady LaDeda —
you’re a maven for making money
Always turning your nose up,
and looking down
at poor, working class people
Thinking you’re better than most everyone else
because of what you got
You’re so bourgeois,
I hope that Dom Perigon don’t give you gut rot
You’re so smarmy, lady cougar —
you believe your own press, that you’re some big shot
But you’re not
You’re just that same bratty little kid,
whose nose was always dripping with snot
Somewhere along the way in life,
you came across a piece of money ...
now you think you’re so bourgeois
Class is more than a custom car,
honor is more than a huge house
True success is not measured
by how much is in a bank account
But you still don’t understand,
do you, lady Bourgeois —
money can only take you so far,
before it drops you
into a river of cash flow funk
Riches got wings
that can fly away,
sending you back into poverty
Such an empty feeling,
ain’t it Bourgie lady ...
No green got you turning so gray

Yearnings

Should I just dream of your Divine embrace
when passions conquer any foolish pride.
Those wanton longing finally satisfied
amidst the moonlight my heart will encase.

My yearnings, reignited to retrace
to awake a fervor sorely denied.
My darling, love envisions worlds collide
as my facade destroyed, heal me with your grace.

My love imploring, is not but a dream!
Tis your caress which roused my fretful rest
while I reach for stars in final quest
to welcome two hearts tangled in-between.

A maven, I take solace by your side
with visions of the night, now magnified

Martian Conniosseur

MAVEN tastes the air
too thin to hold oceans' broth
wafted on Sol's winds.

Note: this is my entry for NASA's "Going To Mars" campaign. I believe it deserves to win, because in 17 syllables it not only summarizes MAVEN's (Mars Atmospheric Volatile EvolutioN) mission, but also alludes to the meaning of its name as an expert or connoisseur (as though it were a master chef, lifting the lid on the desert planet to sample its boiled away oceans). If you agree with me, please visit the link below (just copy and paste it into your browser) to vote your support, before July 29. You may make this offering one of three haiku to be carried to Mars -- THE FIRST POETRY TO ANOTHER WORLD.
