Cyndi MacMillan lives in a small town in Ontario that is home to North America’s largest working waterwheel. Her writing has appeared in notable Canadian literary journals and local newspapers.

A Cruel Light is her debut gothic mystery (4/4/2023). She has been a Jill-of-all-trades, but for as long as she can remember, she has dreamt of being a novelist.  Hard work and the wonderful team at Crooked Lane Books have made that dream a reality.  Please note that her husband and daughter kindly keep her coffee mug filled when she is wrestling with a suspenseful chapter.   During a pandemic lockdown, the family adopted a rescue cat who chirps.

When not writing, Cyndi enjoys reading Gothics, scrapbooking, and losing horribly at board games.  Works-in-progress include the second (and third) Annora Garde Mystery, a Canadian noir series, and a standalone horror mystery, so more often than not, Cyndi is writing.  She is a member of Crime Writers of Canada.

Starry Stained Glass By Chan Hurst

When I read of Chan Hurst’s death, I just froze, head to toe.

Chan – known on the site as Archaic Poet – reached out the hand of friendship to me some time ago. He was as talkative and gregarious as I can be (!!!) and was a complex man.

He had so many layers – so much in him.

In fact, he was very much like the collages that he loved to create. Made up of this and that, all parts that made a wholly unique picture.

He once wrote to me, “I’m more than just gay or artist.”

I let him know, for the most part, I am a loyal friend but that I am horrible at keeping up with correspondence, especially when inspired to write poetry or stories. We spoke of this... he was not only supportive, but understanding.

He said when he was creating he, too, struggled with replies.

It was wonderful to find someone who expected so little of me – understood the creative drive and how it can take over a life, lock you in a room until all you see is the art. It is a rare thing to find someone who knows you care even when you so rarely say you do...

I am torn up, about his death.

There are many many many people here on soup who I care a great deal about and yet I rarely connect with.

I’ve joined Team Serious, So now correspond more regularly with a few poets who I hold very dear... but I have other “dear ones” who I rarely connect with – not for lack of them reaching out TO ME... but for me not returning their lovely soup mails and comments. I am HORRIBLE.

These are dear people, People like Nette, Kathryn Collins, Francine, Catie, Tim Ryerson, Charlotte, Ruben, Chris, Andrea, Nikko, Marlon (Hi Cuz), Brian, Charmaine, Eileen, Carrie, Jag, Andrea, Sara, Lizzie-Dear, Caleb (Miss you!), Frederic, Mandy and David (Miss you guys) and many other people.. lovely people who say kind things...

I think of you so often. I am sorry have neglected you. You all deserve more attention.

I am sending love out.. as Chan would want.

Without conditions or expectations... just sending it out, because I am as hopelessly flawed as the next person. I struggle and fail... but I do care. VERY MUCH.

We have had a hard year, this year on Soup. Poets are dying-- life is unpredictable. We are here. And then we are not. No guarantees. Regardless of how we can give each other time...  be flexible as friends -- life is short and fragile. :(

SO... my invitation to soupers is to simply

send some love out ...

mention a friend, someone you care about.

Tell us something about them

Mention a good heart, a kind person, someone who touched you...

Post once or many times.

Be sloppy with your love, say it like Chan.

Be real, let it all hang out...

This is a Love In and A Wake,

all rolled up into one.

I didn't know him but came across his poetry once or twice..It's always sad to find someone has died, there are never any words only heartfelt thoughts of comfort ..Cyndi in my life I have at times been so focused on something that the rest of the world wasn't there so I understand.I'll just say this thank you for your contests they cause me to think and you can give no greater gift to me than that..To Chan, goodby dear poet..I hope you lived your life well

For Chan:/ While goin' the road to sweet Athy, hurroo, hurroo/ While goin' the road to sweet Athy/ A stick in me hand and a tear in me eye/ A doleful damsel I heard cry,/ Johnny I hardly knew ye./ With your drums and guns and guns and drums, hurroo, hurroo/ With your drums and guns and guns and drums/ The enemy nearly slew ye/ Oh my darling dear, Ye look so queer/ Johnny I hardly knew ye./ Where are the eyes that looked so mild, hurroo, hurroo/ Where are the eyes that looked so mild/ When my poor heart you first beguiled/ Oh Johnny, I hardly knew ye.

I was hearing this with the tune in my mind. Excellent choice!

I came back to mention my two newest friends here who give me such awesome support: Jan and Maurice. And I also want to mention two ladies who have been reading tons of my poetry for a few years now: Phyllis Babcock and Monterey Sirak. I can't say enough about poets like these. they might not be here often, but when they are here, they are such good friends to visit my poems. both of them will see 10 to 20 of my poems at one time! I guess I connect to them because that is how I show my love to my good friends too. I view all their poems I can!!

When I'm struggling in my life and feel like I can't talk to anyone, I know I can come here, write, and find a kind word, some encouragement. I'm sure Chan felt that way, too. We all need that. That's why when life pulls me away, I always return. Thanks Cyndi for this blog and so much more. Love to all, Rhonda

I am so glad that you are back here, rhonda.

Thanks Cyndi, for encouraging us to share hearts. It is too easy for us, in our busyness, to let the days roll by, taking for granted unsaid words "I LOVE YOU". We expect that everyone knows how we feel. Well, they don't! Sometimes a hap-hazard remark hurts instead of bringing joy, love or forgiveness to someone who is lonely, lost or in pain. It is sad, that it sometimes takes losing someone we care about, to show more compassion and love to each other.A friendly face, smile, comment, or hello, can say "I love you". And yes, it is as easy as that !! I love you, dear Soupers !! You who have shown me such kindness in the most unlikely place, here where I would never have expected to find:) !

Cyndi, this is an utterly wonderful blog you did in honor of Chan and helping us to remember all our friendships. Like others here, I cannot possibly mention all the friends that I have here. I thank you for saying I am among your dear friends. I think you are such an intelligent and compassionate person. I will give a shout out to the very first members who welcomed me SO openly. If not for them, I would have been lost here my first year: Nikko and Frank, Kash, and also Irma, when she used Skat account. Too many have come and gone for me to even name them all but they are all precious to me. And two that have left but who remain my best email buddies: Susan Burch and Sandra Adams. (oh and my other email buddy Jack Horne!! He is not here a lot but when he is, he always pays me a visit at Soup as well as in hotmail!)

I'm so hurt about Chan's passing. A few days ago I was listening to him and Drake having a good time on the show. I had called in and talked to him and read something after the show finished. I'm so sad he's gone. I hope that he went with peace in his heart. Cyndi...I love you. You've been sweet and kind to me. I love those two people who've already posted comments below. Some of us are living, but are dead inside. That's how I feel right now. Thanks so much for mentioning my name. You don't know what that means to me...especially..now. Hugs. Oh..this is Eileen!

Hello, Eileen, Dear. Glad you stopped by and sorry. I know I feel deadened, too. Maybe this should also remind us to be who we are, shamelessly.. write how we want... playfully and JUBILANTLY, as he did. He would say that. Be yourself, screw 'em, never compromise your vision. Hope you are well, Eileen. HUGE HUG
