Night Comes

Softly and sadly Up on the knoll; The vesper bell Begins to toll. Lock all the doors Blow out the light; The hour is late Sleep comes with the night. Close all the windows Smother the fire; Sound slips into silence When mortals retire. Downstairs is deserted No one in the hall Nirvana of sleep Rules over all. A day's work completed Now done like the day; Rest is now needed For those made of clay. How soft is the night Where dark shadows fall; The seduction of sleep Captures us all.

Beautiful poetry as usual. I always love reading your verse. Your words speak from your soul. Thank you for your kind words re my poem. I haven't been on this site for a very long time. Have published 5 books and only going to do one more. After that, am rewriting a self help book on "Power" and continuing to give lectures. Hope you had a wonderful Christmas, and I wish you a fabulous 2013. Luv, Maureen x

Where is Elizabeth Wesley? Many poets in Poetry Soup seemed to have drifted of into space. They must be somewhere. Jim Horn

I had to laugh at what I said. People say I have a flare for making comments. And that comment fits this poem. Dispight it's seriousness.

There is a sense of foreboding here that makes sleep escape that much more comforting. As I grow older the mystery and foreboding of the night, of the lack of light becomes stronger. As usual, Liz, you are something else. Love, daver

No one is permanent, every one is to go, so seduction of sleep will capture all one by one. It's universal poem. I think that the days which are passing now should be enjoyed with this wonderful world. Thanks for your comment. Loved always, bl

Lizzie that is a darn good poem and my husband and I were just talking about how lots of poets have trouble sleeping at night. Must be the mind that doesn't want to shut down. Anyway a jem of a poem. love phyl
