Reading and Creative Writing are my passions from a very young age. After spending many years of teaching as my profession, finally I am devoting myself to my passions - Poetry, Singing, and Art. I also write short stories, long stories, memoirs, cooking diary...and work on translations of poems from my home-language, Bengali, a regional language in India.

My early years were spent in India, and some later years in the Middle East - finally settled in Toronto, Canada. Writing comes first, but I also learn, practise and enjoy music and art. I am an avid reader from my early childhood - read both classic and modern writers - from Iliad, Odyssey and Shakespeare to P.G. Wodehouse, to Elena Ferrante and Kazuo Ishiguro. The book which is always on my desk is Gitanjali, the collection of spiritual songs by Rabindranath Tagore, the Nobel-laureate Poet of India.

Poetry is an expression of thoughts, feelings and reflections. Some of my unique life-experiences get expressed in my poems and short stories. I attempt to express my reflections and thoughts with creativity and depth - poetic flow and elegance are my goals. At present I am working on a memoir which covers my family's history and my life in three different countries with rich and varied cultures.

I write equally in two languages -  in English, and in Bengali, which is a regional language in the eastern part of India. I have translated a few famous Bengali poems, mainly by Rabindranath Tagore and Jibanananda Das, in English. My book of translation is available on amazon, being published in August, 2023. In the beginning of 2023, I also wrote a short novel in Bengali, called "Pahar Amay Dake" - it would be "Mountains are calling me" in English. This book has been published in Kolkata, India, by Karukatha Publishers, on my birthday in 2023.

I create videos with my own poems and poems by famous writers, and also create audio-books from English and Bengali literature... created my own channel on You Tube, and uploaded a few songs, rendered by myself.

I work on a few forms of rare art - eggshell decorations, copper-tooling and batik are some of them.

Delighted To Share - Published A Collection

Blog Posted by Malabika Ray Choudhury: 9/7/2023 10:21:00 AM

Dear Soupers,

I am really delighted to share the news of a small achievement in my poetic journey, which I am so excited about. Most of my friends here are aware of - I write in two languages - English definitely, and my home-language, Bengali. In May, 2023, I published a book in Bengali, the title in English would be “Mountains are calling Me”. It may sound like a travel-account, but it
is not. It is about the journey of a real-life character, struggles of a strong woman after Partition of India, who also loved trekking to the Himalayas. Some of you were very keen to read this story, and suggested me to translate that book in English - and Dear Soupers, I am translating the story!

A few days ago, on August 26, I have published a collection of poetry on Amazon - which are my translations of selected poems by Nobel-laureate Poet of India, Rabindranath Tagore. I was working on this for a few years, along with writing my own poems - it was my dream project. This year I thought I was ready to publish the collection. The title of this book is " Touch My Soul and Other Poems”, and it is available both as Ebook and Paperback on Amazon. There are thirteen story-like long poems (each ranging from five to twelve pages), and five songs - Tagore’s songs have such spiritual and devotional quality that almost every person in India and Indians living abroad, are familiar with these profound songs. He was the first non-European to win Nobel Prize in Literature in 1913.

I grew up reading his poems, stories, novels, dramas; from my childhood I sang his songs, danced to the songs in his musicals. I was truly inspired to translate some of his poems for the world to see what gems are in store, although he is already renowned as a recipient of Nobel Prize. For submitting his work to the Nobel Committee, he himself translated one of his  collection of poetry - called “Geetanjali (An Offering of Songs).

Thanks to all of you for reading my blog. You are the ones who inspire me to write poetry! I feel fortunate and am sincerely thankful to all of you for being my poet-friends and offering support with the sweetest comments.

Mala

Dear Poetess, Dear Friend, I am so glad to read your comment. After the longest break possible, I started writing regularly, and I realized that there was so much to accomplish. This publication is not a big achievement, but this was my dream-project - I am enormously delighted to bring work of an Indian genius to the readers of the western world. His work is immense in every sphere of literature, music and art. This is my humble effort to present a tiny part. Don't worry about getting the book right now - I am thrilled that you are interested to read, and found time to write a thoughtful comment on my blog. Many of the poems are stories about strong, bold women in 19th century India, who were expressing their thoughts about life, love, marriage. I often wonder how a man in those days was capable of imagining these women-characters with their distinctive voice!!! Love and Hugs~

OMG! You have already downloaded, before I even replied to your comment! Thank you so much, Dear Poet. It did not take me very long, because I am reading these poems, and singing these songs, from my childhood. They left a lasting impact on me! Have you already read some of the poems? I don't have words to express my thankfulness and gratitude to you, and to all my poet-friends at this site! I am truly fortunate!

Congratulations on this great achievement, Mala. Just a quick question: How does the Teluga poetry, for example, Naani, tie in with the poetry written by Rabindranath Tagore (if at all)?

Suzette, this is what I found about Nanni - sounds like it is a poetic form. "Naani is one of Indian's most popular Telugu poems. Naani means an expression of one and all. It consists of 4 lines, the total lines consists of 20 to 25 syllables. The poem is not bounded to a particular subject. Generally it depends upon human relations and current statements. This poetry was introduced by one of the renowned Telugu poets Dr. N.Gopi, presently working as vice-chancellor to Telugu University, Andhra Pradesh."

Thank you so much, Suzette, for reading the blog. India has 22 official regional languages - and many more dialects. Telegu is spoken in Andhra Pradesh and Telangana, while Bengali is spoken in West Bengal. Tagore wrote his poems and other works in Bengali, but for submitting work for Nobel Prize, he himself translated his one collection, "Geetanjali (Offering Of Songs)" in English. Later many of his poems and stories were translated in other regional languages, I am sure his poems must have been translated in Telegu too. I can find out more information about Telegu poems, and send you links, if you are interested. Really appreciate your visit and thoughtful comment.
