Reading and Creative Writing are my passions from a very young age. After spending many years of teaching as my profession, finally I am devoting myself to my passions - Poetry, Singing, and Art. I also write short stories, long stories, memoirs, cooking diary...and work on translations of poems from my home-language, Bengali, a regional language in India.

My early years were spent in India, and some later years in the Middle East - finally settled in Toronto, Canada. Writing comes first, but I also learn, practise and enjoy music and art. I am an avid reader from my early childhood - read both classic and modern writers - from Iliad, Odyssey and Shakespeare to P.G. Wodehouse, to Elena Ferrante and Kazuo Ishiguro. The book which is always on my desk is Gitanjali, the collection of spiritual songs by Rabindranath Tagore, the Nobel-laureate Poet of India.

Poetry is an expression of thoughts, feelings and reflections. Some of my unique life-experiences get expressed in my poems and short stories. I attempt to express my reflections and thoughts with creativity and depth - poetic flow and elegance are my goals. At present I am working on a memoir which covers my family's history and my life in three different countries with rich and varied cultures.

I write equally in two languages -  in English, and in Bengali, which is a regional language in the eastern part of India. I have translated a few famous Bengali poems, mainly by Rabindranath Tagore and Jibanananda Das, in English. My book of translation is available on amazon, being published in August, 2023. In the beginning of 2023, I also wrote a short novel in Bengali, called "Pahar Amay Dake" - it would be "Mountains are calling me" in English. This book has been published in Kolkata, India, by Karukatha Publishers, on my birthday in 2023.

I create videos with my own poems and poems by famous writers, and also create audio-books from English and Bengali literature... created my own channel on You Tube, and uploaded a few songs, rendered by myself.

I work on a few forms of rare art - eggshell decorations, copper-tooling and batik are some of them.

Finally The Book Is Here!

Blog Posted by Malabika Ray Choudhury: 5/20/2023 5:29:00 AM

Dear Soupers,

Sometime in October/November of 2022, I wrote a blog letting you know about my upcoming project - a story/book in my home-language “Bengali”. Many of you were really interested to know what it was about, and when it was going to be released.

At that point I was not sure when I would be able to finish writing the story - it’s close to 200 pages, and I have divided it in 18 chapters. Each week I was writing one chapter - honestly, I was quite organized about completing the book.

There were a few practical issues - I was not able to download Bengali keyboard on my laptop - I use MacBook - I asked the support people at Apple’s how I could! Different people suggested different ways, but the problem was not solved!

So, what I did - wrote each chapter on my phone, and then transfer it to google drive. The process was not easy - many times I had to write a whole paragraph again to fix one word.

Still I kept on going…and at last, although unbelievable to me, I completed the story in December. This is an autobiographical story based on the life of my family after they were uprooted, and migrated to a different location/country. Their life was completely shattered ! I was born after this tragedy happened, but l used to listen to the detailed stories of their life from my mother, and imagined myself being there!

The main voice in my book belongs to my aunt, who lived courageously in spite of a disability she had from birth. In those days, in India, not many women were allowed to go to school, or work, but she completed university, and became a successful educationist. She loved trekking to the  mountains in the Himalayas - that’s another important part of the story - the title of the book is "Mountains Call Me".

I am very excited to let you know, my book has been published, and ready for sale in the book stores from today.  I travelled to my birthplace, Kolkata, India, in January and February, and submitted my manuscript to a publisher. I came back to Canada in March, but we were in touch, and he was kind enough to arrange publishing the book this month, actually on my birthday.

Thank you, Dear friends…I am in Cloud Nine right now, but I understand, this is only a small step in my path, my writing journey. Living in Canada for last twenty-five years, and teaching in Canadian schools, I was writing only in English. After a long time, I attempted this challenge, and really delighted that it was accomplished.

Thank you so much, Dear Dear Friends - you are not only amazing poets, but kind-hearted human beings who inspire me every day! Your appreciation is truly precious!

Mala

Mala, I applaud your efforts and success. I hope it does well in sales. Many people, like us, do not know Bengali and would have appreciated an English translation.

Thank you, Dear Poet, for such an encouraging comment. Finished writing the story, got it published - don't expect much about sales. I am not a famous writer in Bengali literature - I am living abroad for last forty years. With a job and a family, didn't have much opportunity to write... especially not in that language, although I am quite fluent - so promotion would be very hard. A translation would be very much in my hopes and mind - how beautiful it would be to share with poets at this site! Translation is a tricky thing - not easy to transfer our thoughts and phrases, from one language to the other perfectly. Really appreciate your thoughtful comment.

Congratulations and well done! I wish the book every success! An English translation would have been of interest to many like us who do not speak Bengali! Please keep us informed of the progress. Wish you all the best!

Thank you, Krish, really appreciate your encouraging words. I would love to translate it into English, but I have a few more projects to take care of - the next one might be translations from Tagore - You already read all those poems, and even suggested a title. Best wishes to you, Krish - would love to hear about your travelling experiences.

Thank you, Dear Seeker. I am really glad that this blog got your attention, although I feel so humbled! Yes, it was a great birthday gift indeed! I finished writing the story in three months - couldn't believe myself - after I attempted writing in Bengali probably after twenty years. In last three years, along with the poems I posted on Soup, I wrote a few poems in Bengali - and they were published in an online worldwide Bengali magazine. Truly appreciate your beautiful comment, I feel inspired! There is a lot to learn in this literary journey, and your poems are one of my inspiration. Best wishes!

Thank you so much, Dear Pangie! Yes, at last the book is ready, and on the shelves. I am very excited, although I know this is only the first attempt - I will have to write more! I plan to continue writing in both the languages - both are so rich in vocabulary and expressions. Really appreciate your sweet, kind messages. Love ~ Mala
