Reading and Creative Writing are my passions from a very young age. After spending many years of teaching as my profession, finally I am devoting myself to my passions - Poetry, Singing, and Art. I also write short stories, long stories, memoirs, cooking diary...and work on translations of poems from my home-language, Bengali, a regional language in India.

My early years were spent in India, and some later years in the Middle East - finally settled in Toronto, Canada. Writing comes first, but I also learn, practise and enjoy music and art. I am an avid reader from my early childhood - read both classic and modern writers - from Iliad, Odyssey and Shakespeare to P.G. Wodehouse, to Elena Ferrante and Kazuo Ishiguro. The book which is always on my desk is Gitanjali, the collection of spiritual songs by Rabindranath Tagore, the Nobel-laureate Poet of India.

Poetry is an expression of thoughts, feelings and reflections. Some of my unique life-experiences get expressed in my poems and short stories. I attempt to express my reflections and thoughts with creativity and depth - poetic flow and elegance are my goals. At present I am working on a memoir which covers my family's history and my life in three different countries with rich and varied cultures.

I write equally in two languages -  in English, and in Bengali, which is a regional language in the eastern part of India. I have translated a few famous Bengali poems, mainly by Rabindranath Tagore and Jibanananda Das, in English. My book of translation is available on amazon, being published in August, 2023. In the beginning of 2023, I also wrote a short novel in Bengali, called "Pahar Amay Dake" - it would be "Mountains are calling me" in English. This book has been published in Kolkata, India, by Karukatha Publishers, on my birthday in 2023.

I create videos with my own poems and poems by famous writers, and also create audio-books from English and Bengali literature... created my own channel on You Tube, and uploaded a few songs, rendered by myself.

I work on a few forms of rare art - eggshell decorations, copper-tooling and batik are some of them.

Memoir Project

Blog Posted by Malabika Ray Choudhury: 12/29/2024 7:58:00 AM

Dear All My Souper Friends,
I am so excited to let you know that I have successfully completed the first part of my Memoir Project and received a glowing congratulatory letter from my mentor. Apparently I have met all their expectations in the last six months, and on the way to beginning a new chapter, called "Wisdom Project" funded by our government. I really want to share this journey with all my poet-friends, so copied a part of the email received from my mentor.

"Dear Malabika,

Thank you for participating in the MAC sponsored Memoir project. Together we were able to achieve a lot (as listed below)! The project will be closing out by the end of this year. Once you are back from your vacation we shall be meeting to decide on the next steps.

  • You diligently read 8 outstanding memoirs.
  • You actively attended in person nearly all of 8 book seminars facilitated by experienced practitioners.
  • You reviewed each book in the context of the memoir you are writing and you diligently recorded your reflections on each of them.
  • You met with your mentors, planned and outlined your memoir using a variety of techniques and methods;
  • You have completed the first draft of your memoir - a huge achievement!
Congratulations once again for all your hard work and wish you all the very best for your writing! On behalf of the .... and the project sponsors..., allow me to thank you for your time and efforts on this project and congratulate you on your achievements. Wish you a Merry Christmas and happy holidays! Warmly. "

Thank you all. This is an unprecedented, unbelievably exciting step for me. Delighted to share with you who understand how amazing this endeavour is for a writer who has begun her journey. Wishing you a delightful, healthy, happy, peaceful Happy NEW YEAR!

Thank you so much, Dear Krish. Yes, each life is a book - I totally agree. Don't know if mine would ever make it to the print, but I am delighted that our Arts Council is giving us an opportunity! Without encouraging words from my fellow poets at this site, I wouldn't even imagine penning a document like this! Wish you a wonderful New Year filled with joy, happiness and possibilities.

Dear Michael, Your comment made my day! You are right - the memoir-project funded by Ontario Arts Council, was a great opportunity for me to get involved in a highly competitive initiative. I never thought I would ever be selected for such an endeavour. Not sure where this will finally lead me, but does not really matter, right now I feel so fortunate that following suggestions by a creative writing mentor I have a real document on hand. Appreciate your beautiful words, Dear Michael, these comments from my poet-friends really make a difference! For a long time I was passionately penning my experiences, now it is taking a shape. Thank you for inspiring me with your kindest words. Wish you an amazing New Year filled with joy, happiness good health and peace.

Dear Tom, Thank you so much for your inspiring comment. I remember, a few years ago I made you read a chapter from my writings...and you are such a kind soul, you read and commented so beautifully! Now those memoir-pieces have got into a shape or structure, and I feel so fortunate that I have been included in a project funded by our regional government. I will keep you updated about this venture. Hope you are doing very very well. I found and listened to a You Tube video in which you are the song-writer. How fascinating! Best wishes ~
