HELP!!!

Blog Posted:2/4/2010 11:55:00 PM
In my recent sponsored contest, It is very hard for me to eliminate because all the poems are bountifully amazing and moving. But I successfully eliminate and all the poems remaining presently is 29. I tried so hard to place them in a position, but I am having a hard time doing that because it seems all of them are going to be in first place. This is my first sponsored contest. Any idea with how to judging criteria pleas? all is welcome...

ops, I just saw some typos I made down there, but anyway, if I were ENTERING a contest, I'd be darn sure to check that kind of stuff over really well before EVER sending a poem into a publisher or to a contest!

yes, it can be really hard, depending the kind of entries you get. I helped judge the contests at Shadowpoetry for several years, they were international contests and 3 judges were judging them (we didn't know who the other judges were and even then, we had very different scores from each other sometimes) we all used the same criteria (10 points each) for these: IMAGRY/ THEME/ JUDGE"S pesonal RESPONSE to the poem/ STRUCTURE ( a biggie for me, I would not score high points in this section for misspelled words and poor construction of sentences), and finally was HOW WELL the poem achieved its purpose. I think those were the five as I recall. Andrea

I print the poems so I can see all of them together. It really helps to sort out. I then break them into good and best. I use criteria such as how does it flow, is there a definite theme and does it live up to it, can I read the poem and understand what the author states, does it excite me to read, is there a smooth transition from line to line or stanza to stanza, the impact of the conclusion, etc..... It isnot easy but I find there are poems that grab your attention and there are those that will have impact the more you read them. I read each poem 3-4 time and many poems I sorted into my better column I will end up placing in my best. I the began to rank. Once I have awarded all my places and honorable mention, I print another copy. I then re-evaluate my placement and make any other changes needed. Once I have convinced myself I have selected the best and am happy with the rank, I post the results. Not having the poets name is a great advantage and prevents bias.

Hi Olusegun :) You sure have a gargantuan task ahead of you, bravo to you for being able to cut it down to 29 :) that in itself is accomplishment enough-- I don't have the privilege of hosting contests here yet--but as for judging goes-- I guess it would help to set a criteria for it and give certain percentages, I think it would also help that the judging will be blind :) : you can have like a primary criteria for originality, adherence to challenge, content and how the poem comes across to the reader then you can also have secondary criteria for grammar, spelling, structure I hope this helps a bit, but of course the insights of the other poets who are judging their own contests ere would be better help :) Wish you all the best in judging! Enjoy your weekend :)
