If Not For Love

If Not For Love

The little child who cries,
brushing sleep from startled eyes,
might not have awakened from her dreams
to fill the night with plaintive screams
if not for love.

The little collie pup
who tore the sofa up
and pleads here in a mournful crouch,
might not have ripped apart the couch
if not for love.

Steam Radiator

The radiator whispered like breath
beneath the old window 
               (half opened for mercy)
where cold fingers of air
braided themselves with steam
and the snow stayed only for seconds
dancing above the sill
in the breeze.

The sofa, burgundy and bruised,
sagged like an old confession.
I curled into

There was love in an old, creaky sofa,
where two weary souls found comfort night after night,
tightly embraced, as if time had stood still to protect them.
There was love in an old, faded photograph,
with tattered edges, bearing the mark of time,
yet still holding the smile of a rainy day, like a relic of happiness.

Sofa Cushions

I let the cushions on 
the sofa in the 
downstairs living room record my 
sleeping patterns because 
that’s what she 
loves to do.

Promise

I want you to stand in front of the tv
Vacuum when my favourite show is on
Wash the floor with the steamer
And me smile as if it’s fun

I want you to not hear what I am saying
And ask questions already resolved
As I shake my head and laugh
You say you need some new shoes

I want to hear

Sofa Chances


A veteran who served this land   
Employed by a sofa shop    
In Bethesda, Maryland    
Made an afternoon delivery stop    

Lovely lady came to the door    
Wearing provocative dress      
He put the couch on the floor

BRINGING IN A SOFA

 On the floor, off the mat

We all sat, slept & ate

Flooring of mud but broom laid

Cream of cow dung applied.

Life was simple though not smooth

Bit of course with pins and needles

All of it took years of strain &pain

To have a floor of cement paste

Life became a little fine

With no fear for straw/ pine or

I move when my dog wants up on the sofa

He learned so quickly how to not bring sticks and balls back
He seems to think when he puts his head down
there should be a bowl beneath it
Strained swell into a wells
Turning the nail
Hammering ahead
My legs stringed with tongued dog saliva 
That tilt of his head where he pretends to know what Sit means I just

Yesterday

He Does Not Want To Change

He does not want to change
And it is very strange:
Ted a few understand 
Like one does one’s left hand:
Ted who would queerly stand,
As though it is more grand
Than taking up Sofa
That makes rumps less suffer …

Ted with his own notion
Of an Ideal Nation:
“What she can do for you
Starting with Things to Chew!”

Lunch shaded by the Tower at Pisa
Dinner on the Champs-Élysées
Bedtime in Pompeii

She was saying some words while I
rather 
Small behind the familiar sofa sat with 
a couple of somethings I
Can not recall while the
words were falling out of her 
mouth like little Pandora's 
Jars ready to crack at the touch of his 
replies it was a delusional storm of
Elevated thoughts a few lost
commas 
stumbled between the sounds to
reach the right spots

Welcome To Kansas Sofa Mart

“Welcome to Kansas Sofa Mart. How are you today? Looking for anything in particular?”
They look like an odd couple. He is old and ugly; she is young and cute. Too cute.

Husband glares. Wife runs toward salesman, jumps on my lap, strokes my beard.
“You remind me of my daddy,” wife says. Husband looks damned mad.

Soft Sofa

M-orn seventeenth February
A-ims to meet the light; 
R-ising sun Friday keeps
Y-ou away from the night.

A-fter the Thursday twilight, 
R-ed beacon begins to rise; 
D-arkness has turned 
I-nto warm and bright skies.
L-et the alarm wake her up, 
L-et the dawn see her aura; 
O-ne woman is so cool, 
S-itting on a soft sofa.

Oh My Grandpa Dear
