It looked like a bleached tongue
pulled from a mouth,
petrified and incapable
now of letting a word slide over
its calcified silence.
I picked it out of the wet sand
and held it in my hand.
It had little weight, smooth
on one side and pitted
on the other. A cuttlefish bone.
It was a marvel of engineering.
My fingers followed its shape,
took in its texture, the pleasurable
feel of its form. I lifted it to my nose
and smelt its salty, faintly fishy
odor, sea washed to a clean
unsullied smell. It had undergone
a change into something
beyond life, into an artifact of time.
I kept it cradled in my hands,
held it like a sacred relic.
I have seen them too
shrink wrapped in plastic bags
on the end of supermarket shelves,
a calcium supplement for birds
to be hung on a hook
inside of a cage.
They were selling for $2.50
or thereabouts.

can i get a back beat
my doctor
is a proctor
not to be bothered
about your father
so go further
blur blurring vision
deciding decisions
yo
begin again
begin again
i've never sinned
casting stones
throw in the towel
after a awhile
fashion fashionably
late for a date
yo
no make up
making me make
taking a take
a second glance
a second glance
yo
yo
yo
loca mujer
hair dyed rojo
afro fantastico
don't know when
even then
then is now
bow to you
you're my Muse
muse about
get it all out
no leather couch
here where
all are chairs
take care
take your meds
bed is bedtime
time i'm instead
writing about her
again about her
again
yo
vinyl record scratching
back records show
you're good to go
yo
yo
you're good to go
te quiero
te quiero

SEALED ( Ephesians. 1:13, )
We are sealed with the Holy Spirit,
because of the blood Jesus wrought,
The Bible calls this seal an earnest
A down payment on redemption bought
Sealed until the day of redemption,
This down payment we'll never lose,
For God has promised us in His word,
We are His when Christ we will choose
We're sealed; a shrink-wrapped possession.
Nothing can break it or sever,
In Christ we are joint-heirs with Him,
and in God's family forever.

Gliding past the mirror, the visage of sophisticated sensuality,
tall with head turning legs that stretch to heaven, dark and tan,
little black dress, tastefully shrink wrapped about hips and breasts,
stiletto heals, black patent, defining calves and thighs with each step,
but her smiling red lips can't hide the tear in her questioning eyes, “Who am I?”

See that shiny package, on the upper row
Its base cardboard shelf mate, is not the way to go
There must be embossed letters, of metallic sheen
And it must be shrink wrapped, so it's always clean
Add a few more staples, and a cute twist tie
You know it should be fancy, if I'm going to buy
Prominent the brand name, in colors no less than eight
The text it must be fancy, never print it straight
Don't forget the bar code, or the warranty card
Packed in lots of peanuts, in case if it gets jarred
To deter the wayward, affix a radio tag
Then place your corporate logo, on the check out bag
Beware the competition, don't be such a slouch
For reuse they have added, a see through zipper pouch
Please sprinkle on some glitter, for a final touch
And get a catchy jingle, to make me pay that much
It's a pre-priced package, and we'll buy it in a snap
It's a pre-priced package, and we'll keep coming back
It's a pre-priced package, and we'll buy it in a snap
It's a pre-priced package, and we'll keep coming back

The Seder meal approaches;
A shank bone is required.
In years gone by, the butcher smiled
Whenever I inquired.
I hardly know him, but these bones
Are tossed when meat is cut
And so he’d give me one for free;
Today I got one – but…
It’s nestled now in Styrofoam
And shrink-wrapped – very nice,
Until I noticed something else –
A ticket with a price!
It cost $1.23.
That’s not a lot of cash,
But it’s so weird to pay for what’s
Intended for the trash!

The days go by
as I walk around the man made lake,
churning the tides of time backwards
making butter from the gold and brown broth
a solitary wanderers on the same gravel path.
Always a person for whom the flow meant danger
from spring to summer, I walk the scene
with cheery “mornin’s”
popping the insular bubbles
of self imposed
Silence.
The days go by
as spring returned to my aged step.
The flow lures the weary mind tired of treading water.
Glassine eyes cataract dimmed clear and lift to blue skies.
Familiar faces grin back hooked
on a cheery “mornin’”
Marshaled resources clockwise turn.
Forward thinking, right sided, occasion walks
from summer to fall
popping the insular bubbles
of self imposed
Silence.

Christopher really liked Lisa
He thought she was really quite fit
They worked together every day
At a very well known supermarket
When he asked her out she said yes
But to show that they were an item
They were shrink-wrapped together
And had a barcode label stuck on them

Lost like a butterfly swarming with bees
or a silvery birch in a row of pine trees
a star which fell headlong into the sea
to light up dark ships and their sunken debris
Caught like an afterthought while you were crying
a bird with his wings clipped while he was flying
the look in your eyes when you've just been caught lying
shaking your head with integrity dying
Tossed like a record or a scratchy 8-track
with my plastic all scuffed and my labels peeled back
replaced by blank tapes in a shrink wrapped 6 pack
to be tossed by the compact disc era attack
Bruised like the perfect peach left in the sun
or the knowledge I have that I'm never the one
A soul injury which has quickly spit spun
into losing the war as the battle's begun...

I found Jesus in a cereal box,
flakes tumbled inconsistently,
pauses between each one,
and in one such pause fell
Jesus.
Shrink-wrapped, sermonising,
gape-mouthed,
prayer-clasped hands,
head-cocked
and bright haloed.
Sadly, I traded him
for he had less hit points
than Pikachu.
When all you receive
are scraps from the
table of life,
finding Jesus is no big deal,
when more hit points
are your real salvation…
Amen.
