Ophid air of misconception
Polarizing those of superstition
Hideous to some and
Indescribably beautiful to many
Devoid of human soul
Involved in man’s downfall
Only to be cursed as 
Pretense of innocence
Holding unfounded fear
Of snakes who serve
Behind our sight with
Intense appearance and
Always omnipresent

Into the abyss
I look in to see 
Peeking over, to discern 
Her looking up at me. 

Reptile cold and slithe,
I slither through the dewy blades,
And writhley race across the glade.
A lumping creature, 
Limpling, legless loping,
Filled with their plastic dopamines. 

Wet with amnion, glistening,
Halting in the flatlands,
No colour lights my way,

12 Days of Christmas From West Texas

On the twelve days of Christmas, West Texas gave to me
	twelve tarantulas creepin’,
		eleven javelinas diggin’,
		ten jack rabbits jumpin’,
		nine skunks a stinkin’,
		eight mantis prayin’,
		seven snakes swimmin’,
		six mountain lions,
	five sunny days,
		four mockingbirds, 
		three hoary bats,
		two horned toads,
	and a cowbird in a mesquite tree.

On the twelve days of Christmas, West Texas gave to me
	twelve oxeye creepin’,
		eleven acanthus flamin’,
		ten

The Reptile Hunter

I headed out hunting
But the game wasn’t deer
Was stocked with beef jerky
And a six pack of beer

I climbed to my tree stand
And tried hard not to cuss
Since it was located
High up on a cactus

There was nothing moving
That chill time in the morn
So I calmly waited
Until the weather warmed

As the sun threw its rays

Reptile Woman As Black Swan

Reptile woman was a happy black swan.
Dancing on a stage that glitter was on.
She thought she was pretty and dainty too.
She’s awful one guy said, she belongs in a zoo.

Don’t be so mean, another replied.
She is a reptile with a natural glide.
She’s light on her toes, and entertaining too.

I Am Turtle

I am turtle
and I roam.
From town to town,
carry my home,
upon my back
and that’s a fact.

A more patient creature
you’ll not see;
my best feature,
is to patient, be.
I take my time
and always arrive.

Lunch In the Okeefenochee

Sluggish swamp water seeps through cypress knee
Looking for the reclusive crocodiles now infesting,
Our air boat skims along the edge of Okeefenochee
Where we spy a prehistoric-like alligator ingesting
What appears to be an unwary otter or fox squirrel
Our guide points out a log laden with sunning turtles
With the reptiles in the swamp, we have no quarrel,
As accelerating

Angry Flying Reptile

A paleontologist, I specialized on the fauna
that flourished in the Jurassic era.
So, when I got an invitation to speak
in an international seminar last summer,
on the habitat and extinction of dinosaurs,
I set out to do my homework seriously
on the topic, lest I fail to meet the time-line.
