The world descends into darkness
with each turning wheel of the sun.
Our hearts grow heavy with starkness,
an emptiness we can’t outrun.
In the black pit of midnight,
we do not fall asleep.
We welcome the year with solemn might,
yet by break of day, our vows don’t keep.
We grasp at frivolous dreams,
believing they might save us still.
The world unravels at the seams
as power, looks, and lust shape will.
We toast to new ambitions—
the promotion, the figure, the balance.
All self-focused missions
to build our private palace.
But the grain must die,
or it withers alone.
Self-focus is a subtle lie
that beneath the world’s weight groans.
Yet with each crisp ring,
the old bells still call—
atop the steeple, they sing,
arms spread wide to break our fall.
How long will we wander
in this murky midnight hour,
promised better dreams yonder,
only to turn our souls sour?
All the while, He waits
and counts down time.
As we count up, clocking fate,
He counts down to the final line.
Midnight bells—
they ring,
they sing.
Oh, those midnight bells,
a truth
we cannot mute.
I’ll toast to this, I’ll toast to that
Let’s give a cheer, in a party hat!
It’s New Year’s Eve, I’m home by myself
Reading a favorite book from my book shelf.
Staying away from the New York crowd
loving my life, which is never loud
Doing what I want, when I want to do it.
Relatives misunderstanding, throwing a fit.
They do not realize I love being alone with just me.
Eating my frosted brownies, drinking my sweet green tea.
With my cat on my arm, and my dog at my feet.
This truly is comfort, and feels totally sweet.
Next year will be the year,
The year you're here.
The year you're here for that new Kiss.
That kind of kiss that goes down once a year,
Right after all that is old passes by.
It passes by like you pass me by,
You pass me up you pass me by.
I look forward to that night,
That night you stay awhile.
When you stay and say you don't want to pass me by.
A bluebird came streaking violently out of Central Park,
it blurred over the lanes of traffic towards 220.
I flinched in anticipation of the impact,
but at the last second it darted directly up,
as if caught in a sudden wind current.
“Did you see that?” I asked Lisa.
She didn’t, her phone was jiggling.
My boyfriend left yesterday
He had to leave before New Year’s eve!
he has to work and cannot play
he finally gets to run the hadron collider
go get em’ tiger
but I’ve decided
you can’t fight the zeitgeist
that when the cats away
the girls will have their day.
Someone start the music please,
because it’s NEW YEARS Eve!
Happy New Year’s Eve everyone!

Songs for this:
There goes my baby by Kelly Jones
Back on the chain gang by the pretenders
new years eve comes soon
people cheering on new year
kissing as the ball drops
Overcome with happiness and rainbowed, ebulliant wonder,
Bright lights and firecrackered, joy-filled glorious thunder!
We will with faith and undaunted
courage, face the year ahead!
As the sparks fall, mixed with gentle, crystalline snowflakes,
Dusts our poetic noses, here on earth, to give, not to take!
**** Happy New Year ****
From:
Panagiota
This is the night to bring in a new year
You might want to celebrate with some beer
That is quite all right
As long as you have someone sober drive tonight
Drinking and driving is not cool
At best, you would drive like a fool
Don’t be one of those that drink and drive
The two just don’t jive
You could end up in jail
Causing someone to pay your bail
You could total your car
Once you leave the bar
You could get hurt
So, let someone drive that is alert
You could hurt someone
Who could be a stranger or a loved one
You could die
Causing loved ones to cry
You could kill someone
As a result of what your drunk driving has done
Then you would spend time in prison
While mourners wear red ribbons
This is all avoidable
As long as you drink responsible
She puts on a fresh coat of lipstick,
Wipes the mascara from beneath her eyes.
Clearing evidence of tears,
Masking her web of lies.
She clutches her purse,
And swiftly flicks her hair.
Stepping out of the bathroom,
And heads straight for the stairs.
Back into the ballroom,
Striding with elegance and poise.
Amongst the other guests,
Chattering and exuding noise.
With champagne in hand her husband returns,
Clinking their glasses he makes a toast.
To his beautiful wife,
Whom he loves the most.
She glances at the ground before meeting his eye,
A smile on his face as he's completely unaware.
That she's just made love,
to another man downstairs.
It was only to be a fling
but it turned into the real thing
a night she will always remember
set in stone like the end of summer in September
when Portuguese met France
their hearts went into a trance
"Never more shall we be apart,
true love in me you did kick- start"
As the ball is dropped and to his knee he lowers
with shocks and steers from the festive party goers
he asked the ever popular question`
her heart speed up with fervent aggression
As her skin begins to fill with blue and red hue
the claps and shouts begin to brew
she says yes and he placed the ring on her finger
sadly on the digitus quartus it did not linger
On a cool winter's nights she looks up at the stars
as memories flood and tugs at her scars
she looks at an empty finger were hopes and dreams were once placed
where time and unforeseen occurrences had erased
It was only to be a fling
but it turned into the real thing
a night she will always remember
good things sometimes come to an end for the better
Music did not flow.
Everything false, empty, staged.
Made for the deranged.

New Years Eve 2020
So many of us alone
On this night of celebration!
A time to reflect.....
Light some candles to set the tone.
I open Spotify and search Passenger,
Pour myself a large glass of organic red.
I select my favourite incense,
And after lighting, I inhale the musky fragrance.
I throw some more logs on the fire,
Creating some warmth on this rainy night.
So many memories of New Years past,
Some wild parties, and vivid romantic nights.
I shed some tears and I feel some sadness.
As a song tears at my heart with it’s lyrics.
Yes, so many of us alone after a difficult year.
Covid has certainly thrown a wrench into plans.
What is normal anymore, you might ask?
Normal has become what it is for each of us,
Life will never be the same as we enter 2021,
But we hope we can find comfort with family and friends
As we enter a new year, a new future, a new ‘normal’.
Happy New Year to all my fellow poets !
He wakes with darkness in the firmament
An enticing shadow coming to his bed
Sobering him, loving him
Conveying soft whispers
Her breath sweet with
The night's refreshments
Deep lingering soft kisses
Reassuring sensual sentiments
Her hair a dark blanket
Covering him
Wrapping him in her desire
Increasing blood's fire
His arms cling to her strongly
They spiral higher
Their bodies express
What whispers lack
He suddenly knows as fact
He's never really been in love before
But now he's swallowed in its blisses
Sweetly ensorcelled in its magic
It will be a wonderful new year.
NEW YEAR’S EVE DISASTER
Gaby was preening from four after noon,
New Year’s Eve and Vincent was due soon,
Had butterflies all day,
When he came what to say?
She was sassy, bold and in a swoon.
Vincent six foot four, Gaby just five foot,
How to kiss or dance, should be a hoot,
Chose Gaby, she was flattered,
First date, nervous, shattered,
Can mum come, Gaby gave Vincent the boot!

Hot summer, holiday season:
Shopping done, we focus on fun,
Another year is the reason.
Hot summer - holiday season –
Humid, cloud, ninety degrees in,
Hot summer, holiday season;
Shopping done, we focus on fun.
Thunder and light’ning New Year’s Eve,
Mingled with fireworks is showing;
Weather and sparklers interweave.
Thunder and light’ning - New Year’s Eve -
Celebrate as the past we leave,
Welcome the future with glowing.
Thunder and light’ning, New Year’s Eve:
Mingled with fireworks in showing.
Midnight arrives, we kiss and hug,
Wish each other good luck and cheer,
Raise our glasses high, clink and chug
Midnight arrives - we kiss and hug –
Sigh sentiment, swat the stray bug,
Off to bed the first time this year:
Midnight arrives, we kiss and hug…
Wish each other good luck and cheer!
