The human race desires wealth and power 

Our souls grow corrupted more by the hour

With common sense it comes as no surprise 

By our own hands insure our own demise

America – just count the stores,
capitalist carnivores.
That so-familiar movie score,
the swish of passing cars.

The city built on Brotherly Love

at the mercy of Pam Bondi
- was that a person, or a zombie? –
What was Madison thinking of?

Car’s no use: no place to park it.
Arrested at a funeral home.
No gravel pits, no air, no loam

Can this be noon? It feels like night.
What are these groupings? Hangouts? Dives?
They’re ganglions? They’re human hives?
Squandered talent, wasted lives.
Subway line blocks out the light.

Sidewalk garbage. Mostly men.
That hokey old verbal agility,
“insure domestic tranquillity”
correctional facility
for the heirs of William Penn.

Human beings are detritus
(Lifetime Nails, Olympic Sports):
To clean it up, we use the courts
Perhaps we ought to build more forts
- and thus our id comes back to bite us.

We the People, in unity’s quest,
Craft a window, our very best.
A union more perfect, in colors arrayed,
With justice’s brilliance, never to fade.

Tranquility’s tones, peaceful and mild,
Like a mother’s embrace to her child.
Defense’s strength, in crimson hue,
Guards our freedoms, tried and true.

Welfare’s care, in emerald green,
Nurtures all, both seen and unseen.
Liberty’s light, in golden gleam,
For us and our children’s dream.

This Constitution, our sacred art,
Binds us together, never to part.

There are many pictures in my mind,
    From both memory and fantasy.
        Where they seldom overlap,
            Avoiding any redundancy.

Causing me at times to wonder,
    Where my thoughts and feelings end.
        As understanding what moves me,
            Seems important if not pretend.

                                             At times this search is beyond reason,
                                                 As if I'm looking for an iconic ideal.
                                                     So that this paved road turns to a dirt path
                                                         Quickly, leading to nowhere all too real.

                                             Since imagination plays a key role here,
                                                 With relative value that one can insure.
                                                     The need to believe must have some
                                                     Parallel, to reality where truth can't detour.

I was just past one when you left this earth
Suicide the decision that you made
Who was left to tell me 'bout my self-worth
No one! Only you, and you should have stayed  

Too young to express my emotions well
Left with brothers and a drunken dad here
Did you consider how on earth I'd dwell
With dad who stayed drunk so he could shed tears

God sent a couple who would love and care
They filled in the gap when you were not here
God had a plan to fill the space that's bare
They gave me love, showed the way, taught God's near

God opened doors, gave spiritual birth
I was just past one, when you left this earth

Let us not divide politically, but embrace

Keeping my eyes on positive goals
Determined to make my little sphere
Of influence purer, more ethical, for

Color me black, that I may empathize
With those who struggle every day
To be loved, accepted, appreciated, their
Contributions make a better society, and

Color me red, so that I may recognize
The sacrifices of our American heroes
Who shed their blood, gave precious lives
On faraway, foreign battlefields to insure
