Pen and paper in hand, words swirling in my head,
Working on my big essay, Sounds and Whispers, and planning.
Buzz, crash, drip, pop, whoosh, splash, bang!
Startling me, what are those sounds?
A phantom mouse, maybe, hiding under my desk.
I’m sure I heard a squeak.
Jumping up, I knock over my cup—splash, it crashes to the floor.
I gasp, arms flailing; my elbow hits a box perched on the shelf,
My eyes follow it, mid-air, SLAM—
The box hits the desk, BOOM.
I stifle a scream, peering at the phantom mouse scurrying around.
I sigh—my heart races.
Thump, thump! Like a jackhammer.
Wet shoes, making SQUELCHING sounds and slipping as I go.
Buzzing, like a tiny plane,
Just as I grab the handle,
A big, black horsefly lands on my hand,
I try to shoo it away—
But SMACK! SMACK! SQUISH!
Crossing the threshold to safety,
That squeak returns; the not-so-phantom mouse, is closing in on me.
Crack, crack and pop, pop, I run,
Chunky little legs carrying me
Out of this nightmare — fast.
My pet horsefly is so darn finicky
Dings every male in the vicinity
Only goes for rock stars
Who play a mean guitar
She will not accept a facsimile
I am not so sure Buddy is not a pony
His hair is coarse and straight
His tail looks exactly like a pony’s
but he has the face of a dog.
A horsefly makes him act crazy
Maybe he is a pony
That died and reincarnated too quickly?
He never shakes his head up and down
like a pony though
He shakes his head side to side
as if to say “no”
like our daughters always did
He belongs to us all right.
Horsefly bites galore.
Covered in weals with red spots,
All under my skin.
Scratching the itch was no cure,
Nor was head-butting the door.

Black buzzing wasp landed on my shoulder
I moved amazingly fast
Masquerading horsefly
rrrrr rrrrr
Buzzing fly
Big one
Horse fly
Annoying me
I will snap it with my notebook
If I get the chance.
It lands on my hand.
I am not in the mood for this today.
rrrr rrrr
Now there are two of them
tormenting me
I am not in the mood
I miss them both
Several times
They buzz around me a bit more.
Just to show me who owns these woods.

I saw a horsefly when I was young
I saw a man that was being transparent
I saw my brother take a trip on a lark
When acrophobia to him was inherent
At the top of the stairs a clock ran down
I once saw a trash truck fly up the road
Someone told me that time was running out
But it's still hard to believe a cock crowed!
Hands are too weak to fan horsefly
that feast at the corners of her mouth.
Skin hugs closely to dry bones.
Her breath is the trace of death.
Her lips are shriveled
and cracked as the parched Gadabeji.
Tears suck her soft gaze dry,
but silently she cries.
Eyes watch her on plasma screen
while gulping down the American dream.
Winds echo her plight – east, west, north, and south.
Tiny angel,
with innocent eyes,
stare through all our excuses and lies.
We pretend in God we trust
while we watch his angel die.
In changing seasons that old voice came,
as we play that humdrum Christian game,
pounding on ethics door by door,
saying – “Feed my angel and she will soar.”
Let’s help her mount ten thousand skies;
give her wings that flutter when she flies.
Husk of a Horsefly
It's the last day of September
as I carefully toe
the husk
of a horsefly
out of my office
onto bright tiles
Stella will buff
to a sheen
while I am at home
surveying my supper.
But now I have time
to sit at my desk
till it's time for my train.
I can lean back in my chair
and listen to the day
drone near the ceiling.
Soon it will
helicopter down
like a horsefly,
touch ground
and taxi awhile
before braking.
Donal Mahoney
The man with the plastic bug in his head
monopolized my dreams last night
in the place that the horsefly of my dignity
finally surrender to the impresario without a fight.
Seven days and 7 hours transplanted in my memorabilia
reminding the rustiness of the purple child
flatterers danced beneath the clouds of melancholy
and morality spreader the master plan inside my mind.
The disinheritance of my immortality the final day
discouraged my desire to see the forbidden love
restored my will to escape
manipulated the deep of the uncertainty above.
Released from the plastic bug in my head
try to cover my yellow child in the purple sky
laughing,singing,whispering,playing
seven days and seven hours before he dies.
One of the problems
With Nature's great plan,
Is that a horse can't fly,
But a horsefly can.
