Cardinal Rule

A cardinal couple cuddled on the lawn today
Well...  the cardinal version of cuddling, I think
He called and she swooped down from a branch
They touched beaks, I think he might have given her a treat
And isn't that a sincere expression of affection
To share the essence of life with a partner
Sustenance essential to existence

bird watcher’s delight
in eastern United States
nonmigratory
male of species vibrant red
female brown with red accents

(C)alling out for his mate
(A)lone in the misty morning
(R)ed wings flap with desire
(D)reaming of love at sunrise
(I)gniting a flame in his heart
(N)ow the blissful day begins
(A)ll the clouds above, drift by
(L)ove falls like rain;  she arrives

these spiritual couples 
embrace heavenly bliss 
mating forever synchronized 
within lyrical trust between

The cardinal rule, 
	A gift of love, 
	A little red jewel, 
	Straight from God above, 
The eyes in the sky, 
	Flutter, flit, flap,
	Sweet beauty arise,

Red red, simple song,
	Keeping countless crawling along,
	Little black eyes and little orange feet, 
	A simple chitter and a soft cheep cheep,
The cardinal rule, 
	Lovely scarlet rule, 
	Wishing you good

Winter Cardinal

A non-contest poem.

In the snowy winter, there shines a crimson spark, 
A beautiful cardinal perches, looking hardy and bright, 
Its songs resonate through forest stark, 
A beacon in the frosted white,  
Its warmth defies the bitterness in hazy daylight.  

The branches sag with icy weight, 
Yet sitting on it, cardinal sings its tune

Cardinal Directions

No nearer nighttime.
In my own arms I have nurtured
the sweetest flagellation.
Moth to inferno once more.

Silver septum skin.
She snaps from divine touch
to sputtering projection.
Roll credits where credit is due.

Everything ends eventually.
Her sanctified smile shines
through tears, floods, inebriation.
Just in time for happy unhappy hours.

Where was wonder?
I will delicately segment and untie
her endless memory speck by speck.

Behind a fence were piles of leaves
The trees had lately shed
And as I passed, my eye picked up
A flash of something red.

I stopped and looked and out it popped,
An unexpected sight –

The assurance of spring

The dawn kept her promise and
erased the dark..
A ruby red cardinal throbs his
song of the heart..
A robin hops thru the grass
eyeing twigs for it's nest.
The mallards stopped eating,
their breeding I guess.
It's now apparent, a seasonal 
change in the air.
The assurance of spring is every where.
