A cute gentile pig in New York
plays hopscotch over turtle hurdles
which eased her bunny
until a smack talking turkey announced,
'Did you hear how the skunks in bombay
lost a spelling bee - to an
artistic aardvark named clark?'
Around her, muttering mosquitoes
Dear teddy bear, my teddy bear
While a mynah bird confesses
to freeing an elephant
Who stands where dragons roam
dreaming of dinosaurs, as
King Doberman eavesdrops on
Seagulls talking to a sock monkey
Don't have a cow
The little red squirrel told my lioness-
Koalas love a cooling tang.

Beware the morning tiger
Before his first coffee
Look out for the afternoon lizard:
Ectotherm on the sidewalk soaking in other people’s acknowledgement
On occasion I’m a hummingbird
Seeking life’s nectar while shying away from human contact
Sometimes I’m a dolphin
Smiling and dancing in the waves
Last week I felt like a beaver
Getupgotoworkdomyworkgotobedgetupgotoworkdomyworkgotobed
(do beavers even have beds?)
Whatever happened to the puppy
Who would romp exuberantly through the day
Eventually collapsing in utterly exhausted joy?
Be wary of the electric eel
Who will zap you if you get too close
Look at the proudly preening peacock
Hoping somebody will notice me
Occasionally I’m a jackrabbit
Always on my guard, ready to run away from conflict
At times I’m a giraffe
Able to rise above the dust of the day
This week I was a worker bee putting in a day’s work
Happy to let the Queen be in charge
Whatever else I may be, I feel like a White Rhino
Older, wiser, stronger, endangered
My spirit animal is a zoo
…or a puppy
A struggle ensued at the zoo
when King Lion met Jack Kangaroo.
Leo tried to attack,
but Jack fired right back:
"Are you crazy, Cat? I know Kung Fu!"

“Why do the Rams behave violently?”
The little boy queried of his father.
“They need all their might to fight the Jaguars,
But Jags are fast, don’t know why they bother.”
“And why do Broncos try to beat up on Colts?
Wouldn’t this be much like you hitting me?”
The unhappy father just shook his head
“It’s competition, son, you just don’t see.”
“Daddy, this is not what I hoped to find
At a zoo like other children describe.”
“The football zoo is better than others
Some animals here throw games for a bribe.”
“But you told Mom we would see a real zoo,”
The youngster groaned, sadly eying the field.”
“Please just tell Mom you saw animals play
If she learns where we went, my fate is sealed.”

The Panders have come to the Washington Zoo.
They’ve got much to say, but near none of it’s true.
Those cute little panderers, both black and white,
make appeals to the left and concede to the right.
They’ll give you down payments and not tax your tips.
Like the Bush lied to Moses and said, “Read my lips!”
They can’t help their lies or the oaths they are takin’,
Such a cute little orange one, and the cuddly Jamaican.
The border, evictions, and the free car loans of course;
I could go on for stanzas, not to beat a dead horse.
“The end of democracy!” if you don’t vote;
they’ll promise a shirt while they’re taking your coat.
Yes, the Panders have come to the Washington Zoo,
tossing nuts through the bars to me and to you.
Gangs are here
And their here to stay
Going about their day to day
Harassing me
Harassing you
Infidels in our Human Zoo
Triads, Yakuza
The Wild West
Terrorised townsfolk
With their gangland zest
Mafia, Nizari
Guys like Al Capone
Persecuted the innocents
Never leaving them alone
Identification through various ways
Communication
Street says
Tattoos, piercings
Dressed sense too
The Gangs of our Human Zoo
Members are many
In certain cities
Victimise the weak
Pick on the pity
These are kids
Of mums and dads
What makes them
Turn out so bad
Brothers, sisters
No questions asked
Shot and knifed
A Gangland task
It makes them no better
Than you or me
We are the difference
A different sanity

At
the zoo
you
will find
animals
of all
kinds:
Lions,
tigers, bears,
elephants and
kangaroos.
Oh! What
fun
to see!
Hey, look! That
monkey
looks
just like
you!
At the Zoo we were forced to withdraw
after we saw the beast that we saw
We got such a fright
But found out later that night
It was only Larrys Mother-in-law!
Enter in Zany Zoo if it qualifies.
There was once a chap of a zoological crew
And he got always plenty to do
One day he was prey
Nothing else more to say
So ended the fellow's life in the zoo
Betty and Johnny, who were seven and eight,
lived close to the zoo, very near the front gate.
They visited often, with their mom and their dad,
and always told Gran about the fun that they had.
One day as the wind blew through the Crumpledink trees'
tickling the crinkly bright yellow leaves.
Johnny and Betty decided to play,
out on the porch, where they'd stay there all day.
They opened the door, but to their surprise,
a blue fuzzy creature, smallish in size,
jumped up from the chair and stretched out his hand.
"Pleased to meet you my friend," his words rather bland.
"Who are you?" said Betty with a sheepish grin
as she held out her hand and his fur touched her skin.
"I am what I am, and my name is that too,
I'm a Grrreeble," he said, "and I live at the zoo."
"Then what are you doing here at our house?"
asked Johnny, his voice squeaked like a mouse.
"I saw you at the zoo in the star gazing dome.
You seemed so nice, I followed you home."
"But you can't stay here," Johnny croaked like a frog, "So,
back to the zoo, to the zoo you must go!"
Betty looked at the Grrreeble and said, "This may be hard..,
You know mom said we can't leave the yard."
But Betty, Oh Betty, what will we do,
How will we get Grrreeble, back to the zoo?
The Grrreeble just sat, head in his hands
"Johnny, I think that you don't understand."
Then he said, "I don't wish to go back to the zoo,
I like it here, I'll stay here with you."
Betty looked at Johnny and giggled with glee,
"Can we keep him? I want him to stay here with me."
"No", Johnny said, "No we can't, no, No, NO!
as soon as he can, to the zoo he must go!"
Johnny looked at the Grrreeble and said with a sigh,
"We really do like you, but we must say goodbye."
So they played for a little
games like frosty fooks frittle
with bright red hats and dressum up clothes
and loud frustal whistles, you blow through your nose.
Then later that morning after eating their brunch
they made him a sandwich, dinklebutter and jelly, to take for his lunch,
and turning away Grrreeble said, with tears in his eyes,
"Thanks, it's been fun, to play with you guys."
Now often they visit their friend at the zoo
with a dinklebutter sandwich, they hope you'll come too.

I met friends at ten o'clock for our rendezvous
so we could attend a Halloween party at the zoo.
What weird costumes and sights came into view!
Three wrinkled witches were stirring a bubbly brew.
One of them offered us eyeballs of newts to chew.
"Oh," I replied. "I think I'll pass on trying the stew."
That hag cursed at me like a nagging old shrew.
We walked down a dark road called, Goblin Avenue
when over our heads, twenty vampire bats flew.
Zombies drooled near us while standing in a queue
as if waiting in that line so they could use the loo!
On we ventured, until I stepped in a pile of goo
that turned out to be bloody guts on my shoe.
I was getting frustrated, and about to cry, "Oh, Pooh!"
because my Frankenstein mask had lost a neck screw
but I was able to fix it with a dab of crazy glue.
We passed people dancing while practicing voodoo,
chanting mysterious words that sounded like hoodoo.
They transformed a slithering snake into a kangaroo
who charged at us to fight, using moves of Kung Fu.
This place was creepy and everything was cuckoo.
We ran until we could hide behind an elephant statue.
Thought we'd be safe there until it started to spew
yucky stuff from its trunk that smelled like mildew.
Good gosh, we stunk. So, now what should we do?
Searched for an exit, but where it was we had no clue
Just then we were assaulted by a screaming cockatoo!
Then we were surrounded by ghosts, shouting, "BOO!"
and heard the hungry howling of a werewolf, a lougarou.
Somehow we escaped from that horrendous hullabaloo!

“Hi Sexy”, I said to
The giant beaked black emu;
The next thing I recall,
Big yellow beak heading
At me, full speed ahead
And I quickly stepped back.
Stalled claws gripped the ground;
Halting bird staring;
Obsidian eyes
Screamed in confusion;
Rejected big bird emu;
Approached slowly.
I held out seeds,
His feelings hurt;
Still, he ate them.
We remained
Friendly and
A few more
Seeds he
Partook;
Dined.
Silly Billy went along to the zoo
Right after he had the flu
That day the whole sky was blue
And he carried along his teddy Pooh
Silly Billy love walking to the park every day
He love watching the clouds in the sky,
Silly Billy was just a regular kid too
And he had a lot of friends at school like you.
Silly Billy best friends were Sue and his Pooh,
So when his parents took him to the zoo,
He was so happy to bring along his Pooh,
And show him all the places to see.
Silly Billy wanted to see everything in the zoo,
Starting with: the bears, the tigers, and all the monkeys too.
Silly Billy asked his dad to let him feed all the animals you see,
But his dad told him, he couldn't do that, 'cause that was a wrong thing to do.
Silly Billy loved all the animals in the zoo
He was so happy to have spent there the day
He had so much fun enjoying all the view
His father promised him to bring back another day.
Silly Billy went back home content with his Pooh,
He gave a big hug to his mom and his dad that day;
The day was still beautiful but was almost through
Silly Billy smiled and looked up at the sky still blue.
Silly Billy went along to the zoo
Right after he had the flu
Silly Billy went along to the zoo
With his family and his teddy Pooh.

Anacondas crush to pieces
Bisons sport long shaggy hair
Cheetahs are the fastest species
Dolphins leap into the air
Elephants have large incisors
Fennec foxes, ears like Spock
Great white sharks unnerve the divers
Hyenas are laughing stock
Indris is a type of monkey
Jaguars are fast and strong
Kangaroos are tall and clunky
Llamas' necks are rather long
Mandrills have red-bottomed features
Newts can grow an extra limb
Ostriches are speedy creatures
Polar bears just love to swim
Quetzels are ablaze with colour
Rattlesnakes subdue their prey
Sloths show life could not be duller
Tawny owls sleep through the day
Uakaris have red faces
Vultures scavenge on the go
Wild boar live in diverse places
X-ray tetra brightly glow
Yaks lock horns when in a fight
Zebras' coats are black and white
Now you'll know just who is who
When you visit London zoo.
