My long-time love gave me a special gift,
a photo of himself when he was young.
He even autographed it: “Love you! Dave.”
From then, upon my wall this treasure hung
where I could always gaze at it~~but then
his love, if it was love, began to die.
Who breaks up with someone he doesn’t hate
on Christmas Day? All I could do was cry.
I took the stark reminder of heartbreak
and laid it on a shelf in my spare room.
My wall now bears instead a lovely print
of red and yellow roses in full bloom.
From time to time, I think, when I am gone,
what will the kids do with my mass of things?
It’s then I start to throw some stuff away.
At times, a sense of loss, this cleansing brings.
I parted with some things in '23.
One gem I almost tossed, I’m glad to say,
I kept and put it to creative use.
It serves a unique purpose to this day.
My bedside table never sat quite right.
One leg is shorter than the other three.
Dave’s picture, folded twice, now fills that spot.
Successful reasoning gives me such glee!

I GET ALL FERSCHEMMELED
Y'all think I'm this handsome young devil
Got news for y'all haven't been on the level
Got quite a large tummy
Mother dresses me funny
When girls touch my parts I get all ferschmmeled
SKETCHING FAMOUS PEOPLE
Think I'll get back to sketching famous people
When they autographed my drawings it was a real big deal
My success rate's way up there
Much more than my share
Twelve hundred last count that was totally surreal
THE PRUDE
There once was an old dude quite a prude
Never drank never smoked up never crude
Till one fine day
A girlie did play
With his private parts, changed the old dude's mood

Maybe we went fishing
Under the country sky
Then maybe we went camping
Counting stars and fireflies
In the city maybe we played pool
Restored a car, played chess, bowled
Maybe we went to the racetrack too
But mom isn’t supposed to know
Maybe we emailed a lot
Because you work so hard so much
Yet every word or call I got
Made me feel your love
Maybe I broke that window
With your favorite autographed ball
Maybe I was so simple
To think you know it all
Maybe to me you are
The greatest of all men
Maybe in my teens
I think you don’t understand
Maybe in my forties
I appreciate you more and indeed
It is because you are who you are
A unique Father is everything

Let’s rhyme as if we can and could
uncaught poet's schnook traced and pushed.
Writing rhymes words fluent posed well N, good
Poet on the end of each sentence a hood and crook
mellow laden handwritten booked completed on in brook.
Seasoned autumn ledger recital pure cured pushed
Poet's words from mine breath heart felt procured.
Allured contoured letters combine words understood.
Messages misconstrued over look, only would.
Letters combined lured, cured written underfoot
Poet's charcoal signing autographed in soot
Uncaught poet rhymes schnook and pushed
Let’s rhyme as if he can and he sure could.

This is quite a bit overdue my friends
It's an ode to brussel sprouts
Those delicious spherical bundles of joy
Not too popular hereabouts
Poor wee fellows just want to be loved
Along with all the other veggies
They've long had a real image problem
About as popular as a wedgie
Thinking of starting a worldwide petition
Anybody wishing to join
Send a hundred dollars to me, Jester Jack
You'll receive a commemorate coin
Along with the coin you'll receive a bushel
Of these oh so luscious little critters

My son got a gift from his buddy,
A book which is sure to get raves.
He was thrilled ‘cause he knew
That the lead of U2
Was the author and one of his faves.
But the best part was quite unexpected –
An autograph written inside,
With no question in mind
Of the fact it was signed
By the writer – it was Bono-fide!
*thanks to my husband for the punchline

in the caves where the water flows
i hum a tune that crept into my mind from way back
i wish that she could have come, but she is still healing
i wish that she could feel this, but she is still dealing
in the caves where the water flows
i close my eyes in complete disbelief
i only dreamt about this after watching many television commercials
i want an autographed anecdote, but there are no ways to get an answer
i want a safety deposit box memory, but all i have are remembrances of right now
in the caves where the water flows
i am comfortably stuck, and i never want to leave
the magic and the mystery amazes me to the point of endless curiosity
the shock and the awe of it all inspires me to come back for more the next day
in the caves where the water flows
i embrace the peace and the medicinal stress release
nothing in the world above matter much here
i feel so far away and obliviously happy with nothing anywhere near
in the caves where the water flows
i give it one last goodbye kiss
i make my promise to come back somewhere between sometime soon and the very near future
knowing deep down inside, the truth is that i may never pass this way again

Living Truth
Ancient guides of venerated truth
Stumble through numb spiritual graveyards
Where truth casts its shadow in chiseled words,
A signature of affection,
On moss bathed alabaster stones that once
Gleamed in treasures of veracity,
Autographed insights of the ancient sages
Screams out the litany of wisdom
Then begs, like balm, the insomniac unconscious heart
To intone a resurrection,
A living trove of living verbs in action
Breaking from the bondage of a chrysalis redecorated
With raw promises to shake off stagnation,
Relight the lantern star of the eternal spring’s veracity
Springing into actions that rise from stone inertia
Insight’s revelation releases a new song of songs
Truth that lives anew –
That propels the quest of new a-ha’s
That plants new reasons for renewed actions
In the waiting heart embraced.

Friends are like water
Family's blood
I guess that's why Mine's
always stuck in the mud
A feline's independent
a puppy dog's loyal
Meghan's back in the States
Harry's home with the Royals
Spring's cool and rainy
Winter's severe
Summer's a long heat wave
Fall leaves every year
The Moon changes shape
The Sun's always round
The Universe expands
Without making a sound
The Laws of Physics are fixed
Gravity's in Place
The Future Belongs to
Who Wins the Space Race

He was a bit overawed
his topic, too broad
A speech on 'The Universe'
ought not to be terse
So he narrowed it down
to his beloved hometown
He focused on New York --
Jews and Muslims who eat pork
He cited some verses
from the Bible and Koran
Then he threw up his hands
Said, "I've done the best I can."
The judges cried, "Bravo!"
You're a brilliant young man

At the crowded book store
People are lining up
Eying an autographed copy
Of a newly released bestseller.
Enthusing front of the line
Are the scholarly readers,
Critics, and the like:
Aspiring headline makers.
Some have read the reviews,
Some know author's bio.
Staging erudite conversations
Are members of book clubs.
Showing off signed copies
Are those of a special class.
They've just the spot
On their antique book cases--
Reserved for appearances.

long time coming
constipation still to be overcome
can it all sink in for a taste of forever
as i sink with joy and with glee
long time coming
words are slurred like
the want to murder an alarm clock
may i touch the very hand that autographed
my size so elegantly and precisely
long time coming
i am a trampoline getting
phatter by the steady diet of junk time
can we just be like maintenance workers
and fix this wood paneled time machine every....single....day....

My Room
Crumpled paper litters the floor
recycled thoughts returning home
my soul has become a stowaway
within each scribbled dropping
books line the many shelves
a collection of all my friends
love and companionship
need not always be reciprocated
Poet's stare at me from every wall
their words pierce my very core
for they know who I really am
yet have only seen me in their own reflection
an ivory chess set boasts its splendor
signifying the game in progress
although I find it easy beating myself
having always been a professional at it
two pictures adorn the front wall
one, a crippled lady
the other an old stray
both hold my biography
an autographed basketball
signed by inner city youths
my personal dream team
their greatest victory, still breathing
the antique radio
blares modern music
only to echo
songs of the past
a shiny 357 with one bullet chambered
to protect me from the intruder
that one day will invade my mind
I refuse to apologize for the mess.
