Hi, thoughtful poetry and confronting art..... and mathematics, are my interest. Have been writing, poetrying and painting for about 20 years and mathematicing for about 25. Of course we all have thoughts about random stuff often enough, I like putting those random thoughts into verse making sense or putting them on canvas to be a provoker. I prefer all styles of poetry depending upon my mood.

By the way, unless i state that a poem actually occurred to me, then they are all made up, fiction, whimsical, not true events, they are not biographies and only touch on uncomfortable topics to make the reader question things. I believe poetry has the ability to make us question our own morals intimately, like how the bard made us question suicide in Romeo and Juliet.

p.s. the bard didn't do suicide.

My art is   www.facebook.com/popartwagga

What I write in poetry does not necessarily reflect the opinions or morals of the NSW department of education...

Is it just me? I publish some poems, reread them, and think ho hum it's OK but not great ...and then it gets raves, while I publish other poems, reread them, and think wow super mega great but they get no comments and not many reads at all. Is my poetic interpretation that different?????

Hi Lewis. I have found after all these years here, that the poems that I have invested more of my heart, my time, and have reworked until I am proud of it, are the poems that perhaps are too personal, or intimate to my own experience, that maybe they don't resonate with others. It often surprises me that I might get more feedback, compliments, or comments on poems that I consider "fluff"..., or have written on general topics. I suppose it is because they may be more relatable to the average person? I don't know.... That's just another theory of why comments are unpredictable ??

Yep. Same deal for me. Buggered if I know
Date: 4/29/2017 4:46:00 PM
A lot of it has to do with timing. If you post several poems together one right after the other, the first one posted scrolls down and by the end of the day, it can become invisible. It's a sad thing but to keep up with contests, sometimes we have to post more than one at a time. I hate when I have to post one I consider better than my usual, but then because another contest is closing out, I hurry and post up my entry and if it's a shorter poem, for sure, more people are going to read the "latest" post a poet makes. This is why I appreciate judges who allow us to bring back our "oldies but goodies," many of which were never seen by newer members. I hate when our best works are not realized.

It seems like its mostly pot luck which one becomes more read than others
Date: 4/29/2017 4:31:00 AM
Lewis ,I too have often been surprised to reactions made to some of my poetry that I did not rate too highly.(and vica versa)I guess like our children , our love for them can sometime distort our perspective

Yeah but some of my stuff is so much better and deeper than others and this often gets overlooked.

Hi Lewis ,Since PS introduced the Premier contests I would suggest that the placings thereof are a better judgement of what others really think of the poetry here.Admittedly it is just one person's judgement but as Agnes points out many folk take the time to comment on the placed poems therein. As someonwho has sponsored many premiers ,compared to standards they require considerable care in firstly placing podium winners and then which seven others to include. For those interested in such things perhaps ,if PS published stats in that regard it would show folk here which poems (and poets perhaps)are favoured by premier contest sponsors .

reply below should read 'no' numerical limit

I should clarify for those who enter my standard contests I often have difficulty making placing contests therein. and in many cases they are equally appealing to me, and therefore I use a first, second and third approach and put numerical limit on the number chosen to be so placed.

I also now sponsor standards ,as often I would like to place more than ten ,so perhaps there could be separate stars for those as well as another guide to part of your question
Date: 4/29/2017 1:46:00 AM
Hah Lewis, you just write about what sometimes surprises me the most indeed! There are poems of mine that are my favourite and they get little to no comments, and others that I feel are mediocre, but people roll over each other with praise. I think that appreciation is a subjective thing And yes, indeed, Cyndi is right.

Things that affect the amount of counted 'reads' for a posted poem, which aren't actually indicative that the poem HAS, in fact, been read. The number represents the amount of times someone clicked on the poem because they were curious about the poem. So, what drives that curiosity? 1) If the poet has a following. People have read and enjoyed the poet's work previously. 2) The title. Is it riveting? 3) The category. 'History' will not get as many reads as sensual. 4) time of day. Not kidding. Some poems can scroll right off the main link before those who'd enjoy your poetry sees it. Do you see a pattern with the poems that get more 'raves?'

Yeah Cindy, I think its mostly title and category description that makes poems more read

Anyways, I'm a chatterbox... didn't mean to blather on and on! :D I'm off ... I would say that poets should trust their own instincts and write for themselves, first. Cheers to you all. Happy writing..

But wait... NO... doesn't affect the count! First, the reader must select the poem... the below statement only reflects upon why readers wouldn't leave A COMMENT. Not about selecting something to read. Maybe, just note the time of the day, the day of the week, the category you've selected, if the title is "catchy"... do for two weeks and I'd bet you'd see a pattern, Lewis.

If the subject is highly personal and highly meaningful to the poet and that poet has invested a great deal of time in revision, making sure it is just so, just so, than it is a better poem for the poet. The reader only knows how he or she connected to the verse. What it meant to the reader and what it meant to the poet do not necessarily intersect.

But then again, Lewis is speaking of differing reactions to his posted poetry. Maybe there is another factor.

Good points being made here. What 'new poems' list the readers choose definitely affects poem selection. Also, I keep forgetting about the contest factor... and its a HUGE factor. Usually 34 to 49 other poets will have written for any given contest and most will be curious about the competition. Then, if you get a win? People will stop by and congratulate the winner.

And then there is the effect that when people look at the list of new poems or at the list of poems by one poet, they will be more likely to click on one that has already many views than on one that has few. If they only have to pick one from a given author, it will often be the most recent or the one counted as "best" which is the one with the most views or comments, not sure how PS counts. Which perpetuates the effect.

I think Cyndi is spot on. Also, if you post more than one poem per day, the people who choose the view 1 Per will only see one of them. I find it impossible to keep up with all poems that are posted and have to choose what to read. Typically that will be the new poems posted by poets I follow, and the lists of contest wins, especially for contests in which if I participated. If I want to read more, I browse and pick by author and topics.
