The 17-Year-Old Girl As the World's First Immortal
She breathes between silhouettes and bed sheets,
A kind of bitten lip hopeful-too old and far too young to take herself seriously. Her older sister- the Grand canyon
God said she shall have everything and nothing, live through the Cold war and the Roman empire, see the dawn and sunset of humanity
God asks why after thousands of years the seventeen-year-old girl is still uncomfortable in her own skin
And she says 'I am 17 and unsure of myself-this is how you have made me-too much girl to be woman, too much tremble to be thunder'
She says 'I can live on song lyrics but I have not yet realized the world is more pearl than oyster'
The 17 year old girl is not careful, she does not think before she jumps she does not look both ways. She forgets she cannot breathe water
The 17 year old girl is everything that has ever been 17 and on that list is God and redwoods and every single wonder of the world
she is so ancient she forgot she has limitations because when the gods put her here they said be free, they said love who you love, they said graffiti the bathroom door, they said forget anything fun is illegal, they said swallow a firecracker if you feel like it.
they said do everything with your whole heart and nothing less
and she said, "Don't touch me"
