I wrote my first poem splendid isolation when my hubby had cancer surgery in Nov last year - never put pen to paper before - maybe it was my release from an incredibly stressful situation. I posted on a friends fb page and Jenny Brewer from here said I should join 'Poetry Soup' took me a month to get round to posting as I didn't think people would be interested in my thoughts - now I feel like a newly emerging butterfly and am spreading my wings and I am free to fly. I love the variety of poems I read, the comments and the advice and I am learning something new every day. Jan xxx

I agree with you, miss Puddifoot! I gotta let something out though- Never in my entire life have I seen a last name as ... great as yours! I love your name! Husband agrees. We are cat lovers and whenever I see you on PS I think of my little kitty's feet (gives me an "Awwwwww" reaction)

I do my best writing when I've had a few tokes and that DEFINITELY makes me lazy...Did I just post a comment? Damned if I remember...

For me...it's the IMMEDIATE GRATIFICATION! Oh YES! :) The THRILL one gets when the words just...just fall into place. The high one gets when someone reads....understands...and responds. The beauty of words...self expression...reading into another person's SOUL....Reading what they cannot otherwise express. I do love writing, but to be honest, had there not been a forum where I could share and be acknowledged, I doubt I would write for long. As soon as I write a poem...it needs to be posted. I can't even keep it to myself long. Yes, Charlotte. I love poetry because of the FEELINGS it evokes in me. Yes..there is the cerebral aspect...rules...rhythm...rhyme...but LOVE the way it makes me FEEL!!! I'm....liberated....on a higher plane...of sheer beauty and delight...the magical world of words!

Charlotte ,I sat in my garden one sunny day (many years back now),into my head came a poem(an alliteration ,you can read it here on PS it's titled CONNECTIONS),& such has it continued thereafter.I suppose 'poetry' was attracted to me.Rgds Brian

yes, perhaps poetry is attracted to us, rather than the other way around - I hadn't thought of it like that!

I don't think it's laziness at all for me! there are times when I feel something profoundly and struggle to let it out of my soul. Then other times it simply bubbles out almost faster than I can get it down. For me reading and writing poetry is often cathartic...and many moments of my life are best expressed by me in written words rather than spoken. Poetry and music are closely tied as far as I am concerned as they both reach into the very depth from which I feel , breathe, and look at the world awestruck. And as someone below mentioned I write from life experiences usually. However I also have a vivid imagination !That wondrous feeling when someone says" WOW" makes it all worth it!!

Oh I have always loved the words, the music of the words, the POP, and ping, the slur, the hum of words, mouth music! I got excited reading the dictionary at 5!

Not only the pure pleasure of expression, .....but for me, it is the journal I had always meant to keep, but didn't. Many of my poems come from a memory or life experience. Poems I struggle the most with, are those I write for a contest, but cannot relate to my own life.

yes carrie, I think our best poems always come from real life experiences...I too struggle with purely fictional contest poems, but I don't write many of them to be honest; in fact I don't enter that many contests full stop, but when I do I like to enter with a poem that has some personal significance :)

Be we rich or poor , Highly educated or not . We can find a way to tell our stories The beauty of soup is the fact that other writers understand our struggle to find those missing words or sentences and are eager to help. Carol is right , Its sheer fun.

what a good idea, darren! I think my book would have many blank pages, I frequently have 'those sorts of days'! lol

One day a writer may produce a poetry book of nothing but blank pages , I'm sure it would be a best seller because all of us would understand a writer having those sorts of days.

Fun attracts me to poetry! If I write long winded... My poems lose their fun! That and yes, my attention span is rather limited by my epilepsy. Lazy? Naw! Just having a little entertaining FUN! Go team Dragon!

there are many different reasons why we write, and fun is as good a reason as any! :)

Hello Charlotte! How are you dear? now that I came , I shd be writing something, well I write simply becoz of the same reason as Catie said,, when something reveals to me ,, it will keep haunting me if I don't write it down, make it a poem. and till something strikes, I sit idle coolly! :) I'm a very lazy person , won't struggle at all... let the thought come to me rather than me going after it...hmmm that's how it is... giving you a big hug!

hello guatami, I'm a little better, thank you :) I'm a bit like you in that I have to wait for inspiration to strike, I can't force it!
