"The great thing about getting older is that you don't lose all the other ages you've been." — Madeleine L'Engle

"A reader lives a thousand lives before he dies...The man who never reads lives only one." —George R. R. Martin

"... there is nothing more truly artistic than to love people." — Vincent van Gogh

"And that's the whole poem," he said. "Do you like it, Piglet?"
"All except the shillings," said Piglet. "I don't think they ought to be there."
"They wanted to come in after the pounds," explained Pooh, "so I let them. It's the best way to write poetry, letting things come in."
— The House at Pooh Corner, A. A. Milne

JOY

               LET a joy keep you.
Reach out your hands
And take it when it runs by,
As the Apache dancer
Clutches his woman.
I have seen them
Live long and laugh loud,
Sent on singing, singing,
Smashed to the heart
Under the ribs
With a terrible love.
Joy always,
Joy everywhere—
Let joy kill you!
Keep away from the little deaths.

            Carl Sandburg

Flash Poetry Challenge (11)—20 Years of Poetry Soup—First Impressions—Has Ended (Results Pending)

Blog Posted by Mark Toney: 3/1/2025 5:54:00 AM

The Flash Poetry Challenge (11) has ended (results pending).

Challenge Theme: “20 Years of Poetry Soup: First Impressions” — Submit the very first poem you posted on Poetry Soup.

A common quote about first impressions is, "You never get a second chance to make a first impression.”  Share with us the first impression you made by submitting the very first poem you posted on Poetry Soup.

Challenge Duration: The challenge will end on Friday, March 7, 2025. If you meet the Challenge and your poem’s submission date in the comments section is on or before March 7th, your entry will be included in the random drawing.

Submit your poem's title (and/or URL link) in the blog’s comments section below. See my example submission in the comments section below. (It is an example only and not an actual submission.)

Good News! During the challenge, your submitted poem can be read by anyone on PoetrySoup. Everyone can see every submitted poem’s title or link information in the blog’s comments section as long as the blog is visible. After all, we know you write ‘em so we can read ‘em!

There is no judging. Each poem will be assigned a number that coincides with the order in which they are submitted to the challenge. After the challenge has been concluded, five poems that have met the challenge will be chosen at random and will be featured in a follow-up blog.  The random number generator on CalculatorSoup will be used to choose the 5 random poems.

Remember, since this is not a contest, contest guidelines do not apply, but PoetrySoup’s Terms & Conditions of PoetrySoup Membership still apply.

As was done in prior challenges, the comments section will be reserved for poets' submissions and their interactions with the challenge sponsor. Everyone's cooperation is very much appreciated.

I welcome questions and comments via Soup Mail.

Share the news with your muse

Old or new, whatever you choose

It’s time to open the sluices of your creative juices …

Let the “First Impressions”challenge begin!

great idea Mark, as a total novice to poetry (I was not a poetry lover at school I found it dull and boring) it actually took me 3 months to even pluck up the courage to post my first poem. I'd never written a limerick not heard of haikus... But Look at me now, over 3000 poems and 2 humour books to my name! hugs jan xx
