"The great thing about getting older is that you don't lose all the other ages you've been." — Madeleine L'Engle

"A reader lives a thousand lives before he dies...The man who never reads lives only one." —George R. R. Martin

"... there is nothing more truly artistic than to love people." — Vincent van Gogh

"And that's the whole poem," he said. "Do you like it, Piglet?"
"All except the shillings," said Piglet. "I don't think they ought to be there."
"They wanted to come in after the pounds," explained Pooh, "so I let them. It's the best way to write poetry, letting things come in."
— The House at Pooh Corner, A. A. Milne

JOY

               LET a joy keep you.
Reach out your hands
And take it when it runs by,
As the Apache dancer
Clutches his woman.
I have seen them
Live long and laugh loud,
Sent on singing, singing,
Smashed to the heart
Under the ribs
With a terrible love.
Joy always,
Joy everywhere—
Let joy kill you!
Keep away from the little deaths.

            Carl Sandburg

Flash Poetry Challenge (10)—Clerihew Poetry Form—Has Ended (Results Pending)

Blog Posted by Mark Toney: 2/16/2025 2:00:00 PM

The Flash Poetry Challenge (10) has ended (results pending).

Challenge Theme: “Clerihew Poetry Form”—Write a Clerihew poem on any subject, any title, English only.  Please give attention to the definition of the Clerihew, which can be found in PS under the menu item, Types of Poemsin part: “It is typically in two rhyming couplets with (four) lines of unequal length that refer to a famous person … The end of the first line of a true Clerihew poem will only consist of the subject’s name. The purpose of this is to show the skill in being able to rhyme difficult names.”

Poems can be old or new as long as they were written by you.

Examples of Clerihew poems:

John Lennon

Madame Deficit

The Dopey One

Bonus Challenge:  Write a “Clerimerick Couplets” poem. In August of 2019, I created the Clerimerick Couplets, a hybrid form consisting of a Clerihew, followed by a Limerick, followed by two rhyming couplets, in that order, totaling 13 lines (4+5+4). The chosen theme must be consistent throughout the entire hybrid poem.

Examples of Clerimerick Couplets poems:

Waterloo Clerihew 23-Skidoo

Brilliance and Madness

Guaranteed To Blow Your Mind

Completing the Bonus Challenge will give you an additional opportunity to be randomly chosen to be featured in the “results” blog. See “There is no judging” paragraph below.

Challenge Duration: The challenge will end on Friday, February 21, 2025. If you meet either the Challenge or Bonus Challenge, and your submission date in the comments section is on or before February 21st, your entry will be included in the random drawing.

Submit your poem's title (and/or URL link) in the blog’s comments section below. See my example submission in the comments section below. (It is an example only and not an actual submission.)

Good News! During the challenge, your submitted poem can be read by anyone on PoetrySoup. Everyone can see every submitted poem’s title or link information in the blog’s comments section as long as the blog is visible. After all, we know you write ‘em so we can read ‘em!

There is no judging. Each poem will be assigned a number that coincides with the order in which they are submitted to the challenge. After the challenge has been concluded, five poems that have met the challenge will be chosen at random and will be featured in a follow-up blog.  An additional wild card random drawing will take place to feature one of the poets who met the Bonus Challenge but was not selected as one of the original five to be featured. The random number generator on CalculatorSoup will be used to choose the 5 random poems and any wild card addition.

Remember, since this is not a contest, contest guidelines do not apply, but PoetrySoup’s Terms & Conditions of PoetrySoup Membership still apply.

As was done in prior challenges, the comments section will be reserved for poets' submissions and their interactions with the challenge sponsor. Everyone's cooperation is very much appreciated.

I welcome questions and comments via Soup Mail.

Share the news with your muse

Old or new, whatever you choose

It’s time to open the sluices of your creative juices …

Let the “Clerihew Poetry” challenge begin!
