"The great thing about getting older is that you don't lose all the other ages you've been." — Madeleine L'Engle

"A reader lives a thousand lives before he dies...The man who never reads lives only one." —George R. R. Martin

"... there is nothing more truly artistic than to love people." — Vincent van Gogh

"And that's the whole poem," he said. "Do you like it, Piglet?"
"All except the shillings," said Piglet. "I don't think they ought to be there."
"They wanted to come in after the pounds," explained Pooh, "so I let them. It's the best way to write poetry, letting things come in."

JOY

               LET a joy keep you.
Reach out your hands
And take it when it runs by,
As the Apache dancer
Clutches his woman.
I have seen them
Live long and laugh loud,
Sent on singing, singing,
Smashed to the heart
Under the ribs
With a terrible love.
Joy always,
Joy everywhere—
Let joy kill you!
Keep away from the little deaths.

            Carl Sandburg

What Are Your Favorite Lyrics?

Blog Posted by Mark Toney: 6/18/2025 9:36:00 AM

I have enjoyed posting blog challenges for the last seven months, but I decided to change gears for this post. I'm sure for most, if not all, of us, music has been part of the fabric of our lives—along with cotton. ;-) Hearing certain songs can take us back to the moment we first heard them, resurrecting emotions and memories that we were experiencing then.
.
What are your favorite lyrics? I'm not necessarily talking entire songs, but a line (or several lines) from your favorite songs that resonate with you. If you would like to share a favorite lyric that is meaningful to you, feel free to post it in the comment section below. You can list just the lyric. If you prefer, you could also add where it's from and who wrote it. You can even come back later and list more.
.
I'll start with one of my favorites in the comments section. This isn't a contest or challenge. It's just sharing. I hope you'll share one or more of yours, too. :)

~.~

"What happened to the world we knew, When we would dream and scheme and while the time away. Yesterme yesteryou yesterday.(2V) Where did it go. That yester-glow, When we could feel the wheel of life turn our way. Yester-me yester-you yesterday(3V)I had a dream, so did you. Life was warm and love was true. Two kids who followed all the rules. Yester-fools and now. Now it seems those yester-dreams were just a cruel and foolish game we used to play. Yester-me yester-you yesterday. Stevie Wonder

Kudos to Linda Creed for writing the lyrics to "The Greatest Love Of All" - a song I first heard George Benson sing on his album "Give Me The Night" Whitney Houston didn't make a bad job of singing it either.. "I decided long ago Never to walk in anyone's shadows If I fail, if I succeed At least I'll live as I believe No matter what they take from me They can't take away my dignity Because the greatest love of all Is happening to me I found the greatest love of all Inside of me The greatest love of all Is easy to achieve Learning to love yourself It is the greatest love of all"

And take me disappearing through the smoke rings of my mind, down the foggy ruins of time, far past the frozen leaves, the haunted frightened trees out to the windy beach far from the twisted reach of crazy sorrow. Yes, to dance beneath the diamond sky with one hand waving free, silhouetted by the sea, circled by the circus sands with all memory and fate driven deep beneath the waves, let me forget about today until tomorrow…

A guy I never got to really know told me to listen to this song . He had to leave and I never saw him again. but the lyrics to the whole song are so nice: I love you in a place where there's no space or time I've loved you for my life, yes, you're a friend of mine And when my life is over, remember when we were together We were alone, and I was singing my song for you, yes

It's easier for me to name main lines of some songs because the complete songs are so beautiful in the lyrics, such as California dreaming on such a winter day, killing me softly with his song, the sound of silence, songs by all those folk rock people of 60s and 70s so cool and insightful. James Taylor, or the guy who sang morning has broken. John Denver songs. Too many to name !

If a man could be two places at one time, I'd be with you. Tomorrow and today, beside you all the way. If the world should stop revolving spinning slowly down to die, I'd spend the end with you. And when the world was through, Then one by one the stars would all go out, Then you and I would simply fly away -Bread

The chorus from Trading Yesterday's "Shattered": And I've lost who I am, and I can't understand - Why my heart is so broken, rejecting your love - Without love gone wrong, lifeless words carry on - But I know, all I know, is that the end's beginning - Who I am from the start, take me home to my heart - Let me go and I will run, I will not be silent - All this time spent in vain, wasted years, wasted gain - All is lost, hope remains, and this war's not over - There's a light, there's the sun - Taking all the shattered ones - To the place we belong, and his love will conquer all
