Beware of too coy a wife

An unfaithful wife poses coy,
A spouse too straight perhaps plays fool,
Salty sea feels soothing cool,
Courteous goes fraudulent ploy,
Too sweet a tongue tends to befool.

Translation |18.09.2024| wife, coy, unfaithful, sea, water

Poet’s note: Sanskrit has thousands of verses of wisdom called Subhashhitam. This one is taken from my selection of translations. Wisdom tells us to be wary of tranquil waters. They are deep. So also sea waters that be salty are soothing cool. A wife who is unfaithful poses coy. And if I may add, an unfaithful husband, tries to look too caring. The transliteration of the Sanskrit verse follows:

A-satee bhavati sa-lajjaa, kshaaram cha sheetalam bhavati |
Dambhah bhavati vivekee, priya-vaktaa bhavati dhoorta-janah ||

Premium MemberThe Ache of An Abandoned Wife

She did not have to guess.
She felt it in her bones.
Unfaithful he always was,
Unfaithful he'll always be.
She knew where he would be.

Anger flared in the pit of her stomach,
A heart-wrenching in the ache of fire.
What could she do? Revenge?
She rejected such thoughts
Knowing well enough
She was no match against him.
Why couldn't he love only her?
Why did he leave her dehydrated of love?

As in the Fall, her love-like leaves
Fell down, turned brown,
Definitely to be lost forever.
She'll do without him, come what may.
Thus she lay on her settee, love choked,
Folded herself foetus-like,
Relishing the darkness of her abode.

Another lonely night, cursing her dreams.
A wave of nausea gripped her soul,
Knew she'll have to take her medication
Before she really turned sick.
She swallowed the two pills,
She would not please him and have more.
But she could not resist
Drinking ruby red dry wine.

She felt confused. Did she swallow her pills?
Doubt after doubt after doubt.
Her bottle seemed empty.
So she drank some more.
Finally, she slept
Alone, abandoned on the settee.

Broken Wedding Vows

I'd like to forgive you but there is no way that I can.
We've only been married for three months and you're sleeping with another man.
When you vowed to be faithful, you were not sincere.
You couldn't even be a faithful wife for half a year.
I found out about your lover and you don't even care that I know.
Unlike you, I intended to be faithful, this is a devastating blow.
When we met, you were pregnant with another man's baby but I didn't mind.
It was stupid when I thought you'd be faithful, I can't believe I was so blind.
You've hurt me beyond belief, you've cut me to the quick.
You broke your wedding vows and you make me feel sick.
When I learned that you were unfaithful, I wanted to believe it wasn't true.
You're not being faithful to me so I have decided not to be faithful to you.

(Even though this poem isn't about me, it's based on a true story)

The Horse Affair

“Oh! That hurt!” I tried to duck as a vase smashed on my head,

“You rat!” my wife screamed out at me, her face was very red,

“How could you be unfaithful?” she raged at me again,

“I’ve found this piece of paper; so Sally is her name?”

“Now darling hear me out,” I said, “you’ve reached the wrong conclusion!

I can set your mind at rest; there is no real confusion,

Sally is a horse I backed; she was highly recommended,

A filly of the highest breed she’s really rather splendid.”

“Oh what relief” said wife to me “I’m sorry how I acted,

I doubted you, I’m so ashamed, I rather over reacted,”

“No worries” I said with a saintly smile “the incident’s forgotten”

(Even though my head did ache and I felt dazed and rotten),

So I sat down and rested and soon fell fast asleep,

Until that is another blow stirred my slumber deep,

“Ouch!” screamed I, my head recoiled from a frying pan I think,

My wife was like a demon, was she the worse for drink?

“What have I done, why hit me again?” I shouted with a groan,

“Because you need to wake up - your horse is on the phone!”

Abel the Shameless Adulterer

Abel, the armored lancer, was a shameless adulterer not able
to give up for an hour the company of beautiful Anabel;
" I'm allowed to court anyone! " he squeaked out aloud,
" Why must an adulteress be cursed, to me it's superstitious!
I prefer sensual Anabel! She never denies my desires!
I won't bow and crawl! No angry Pope can make me cow!"

" I am joining the Crusaders and take Anabel with me,
in Jerusalem I will announce my bethrothal to her;
ah, my gracious wife Mary, you won't be so merry!
If they arrest me, a bale of jewel will guarantee my bail!"

And if the infidels kill me, " Anabel, send a message to my beloved Mary:
" I ask to be forgiven, not forgotten...I was very unfaithful to you;
in every battle I saw your devoted face so tearful, it was terrible...
I am too troubled and traumatized by this guilt which will bring me death."

You Only Have Yourself To Blame

You're mad because I told your husband the truth.
You cheated on him and I showed him the proof.
Instead of being angry, you should be ashamed.
You cheated and you only have yourself to blame.

You tried to convince your hubby that my proof was misleading.
But he could see the truth and he started divorce proceedings.
Because you were unfaithful, the judge didn't give you squat.
The clothes on your back were the only things that you got.

Your good life is gone and that's something you regret.
You once drove a Porsche but now you drive a Chevette.
Because of your infidelity, you were tossed out into the street.
If you ever find another rich man, you'd better not cheat.

(This is a fictional poem)

Drifting

I drift ever closer
to Soledad,
In the winter of
my life,
For I have done
the unthinkable,
And slayed my
unfaithful wife...

An act committed
reflexively,
And one whose
consequences
I could not see

So, farewell
dear friends,
I am now insane,
I will relive
that horrorific act
Time and time again.

The Woman of My Dreams

My last wife.....
(Hey, you heard me right,
I'd had a few practice runs....)
She was the woman,
of my dreams....

But sometimes things
are not what one seems,
It didn't take long,
For the torture to start,
Try to please her, as I may,
She always clawed at the soul of my heart

Yes, she proved to be unfaithful,
My life, she so shattered,
Didn't make any difference,
how hard I tried,
To her, it just never mattered

Yes, she was the woman of my dreams,
But sometimes, no matter how hard cares,
The woman of their dreams,...
Turns out those dreams....
turn out to be but nightmares

Real Men Don'T Cheat On Their Women

God simply made man and woman
to be together for the rest of their lives...
it's a blessing this heedless world
has not fully known;
and it's so rare nowdays
to see two people in love,
and promise each other to be faithful!
Is that all so impossible?

Real men don't cheat on their women,
real men give their whole hearts full of gold
to those who really love them;
I've come to know a good man
who did just that for his woman,
and he still loves her although she's old!

Unfaithful men, would you rather have
an unhappy home or feel a joy
as sublime as the sunrise in glory?
Untrustworthy men, give up what you crave;
you can be the strongest man on earth,
and still can't stop the tears gathered inside!

Real men don't cheat on their women,
real men adore and cherish them 'till they're gone;
to be beside them and share a lovely dream,
to console and encourage them when they're weak!
