TWENTY-FOUR HOURS
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
daybreak
arising, dawning
originating, illuminating, exhilarating
dawn, illumination, darkness, nightfall
slumbering, dreaming, concluding
shadowy, placid,
nightfall
A bugler stands silent and alone
Deep within the garden of stone
And as the first three notes sound
Echoing across this sacred ground
Resounding in the mourners’ ears
Stir each soul and summon tears
The bugler plays soft and slow
Twenty-four notes we all know
That in our souls resonate
They honor and commemorate
The Veteran we lay to rest
By whose service we were blest
With peace, safety, liberty
These things do not come free
So play bugler, sound the horn
Notes so soft yet so forlorn
Carried on the breeze aloft
Till lost in the evening soft
Till lost in the setting sun
A Veteran’s duty finally done
In the next life if reincarnated
as a mayfly I am designated
it's good enough for me with nothing but fun
for twenty-four hours (under the sun)
until the race is run bonking here bonking there
I'll be bonking everywhere non-stop until I drop
24 Dr Peppers
One day I started running and my legs fell off.
I was in the army, and I had to clean the floor with a toothbrush.
It started raining sideways.
Then a bullet jumped up and bit me that day.
Jenny threw her shoe at her old house.
I guess she ran out of rocks.
I was with Jenny, and I became the minute man.
That’s all I’m going to say about that.
I had 24 Dr. Peppers, and I had to pee.
My mom made some strange noises because she cared about my school grades.
Me and Jenny are like peas and carrots.
Jenny played a guitar naked, and I saw her butt.
For a while I owned a shrimp boat.
When I first met Lieutenant Dan, he was holding a roll of toilet paper.
I like playing ping pong in the spring.
One day I gave Lieutenant Dan some ice cream.
Jenny, is he smart like me?
No Forest. He is dumb as a coconut tree.
You never know what you're going to get in a box of chocolates.
All just put my hands in my pocket.
Me and Lt. Dan are best friends.
I like dancing to Sweet Home Alabama.
I can’t forget about Bu Bu.
Another friend of mine who likes shrimp gumbo.
Me Lt. Dan and Bu Bu are the three amigos.
Jenny will always be my hero.
Twenty-twenty-four
has nearly ended.
What lies ahead,
chaos or peace?
The new year faces
global warming,
climate change,
and an influx of
frightened, illegal
immigrants,
seeking a future
for their families.
Both fascism and
bigotry,
are popular.
Have we forgotten
the millions of lives
lost to war;
fighting for freedoms
that we're proposing
to throw away?
Twenty-twenty-five
offers us a choice:
what will we do?
Are we so stupid
that we would want
our future
to mirror our past;
steeped in blood?
I just started it
When they said it's over
I was on my way
When it was night again
Twenty four feels like Two
You will never know why the day ended so soon
You'll be just walking for five minutes
And the sun will get replaced by the moon
Twenty four hours and his day has just begun.
A smile in his eyes whilst getting ready for ‘fun’.
One hour and he’s deep in the field.
Living on instinct and training with concentration so real.
One minute and he’s in the fight of all fights.
Rounds flying past him, adrenalin pumping through his mind.
One second and do you think that he could know? A flash of light out of the corner as I squeeze my trigger…
This life lets him go.
Tension builds in multiples
Between two lords with their disciples:
For knives wanting to rush at arteries,
Trouble starts changing their batteries!
Now, every cough is risky:
Experimentation with the frisky;
Every move of defiance,
A murderous stab’s reliance;
The discordant notes of a forced sneeze
And awkwardness of every heard wheeze.
Something of headache for cold-suffering Clement
Already out of his element:
“How he should every sneeze contain
And a rearing cough detain…
And the final hateful explosion delay,
If he must still with his life pay?
Twenty-four men in a field
Leaving blood-thirsty tension to build!
Work hard is the
best friend of life gets easier.
Precious one lift’d & cocoon’d in a funerary shroud.
Mer- men and ladies, about, in the sky’s ebb and flow.
The fertile fountain’s full of penny stars behind clouds.
Rubbing chin and mouth of the earth…questions…sigh.
Ribbon’d rainbow’s proud arc when tears cloud the sky.
Splish-splashing happily ever after, sunspry of golden koi.
Kiss-lips must be held closed…why quiet…no thunder?!
Moon in masquerade parade of lightning and wonder.
The rod is the zigzaggedy cane of a lonely old widower.
Wan hand touches his face. Torrent-voicebox’ hoarse.
Bat signals and cotton nightingales in collision course.
Their eeking and warbling, wrestletoss of soak’d sheets.
Sharp needle and thread punches holes in clock’s light.
Twenty-four hour gloom of dawn and dusk, wound tight.
Infuriating how the sun, moon, angels and clouds move on.
The girl gave him a stare but he did not notice.
He was the memorizer.
Memorizing pages as fast as he could.
Occasionally his glasses fell down his nose.
Another child came over.
Before she could ask he said
Now I better understood why he was irreplaceable.
trials & temptations
life's leaven
twenty-four seven
my nose pressed flat
against the sweet shop pane
a yearning
welled within
a sigh
a shrug
I shuffle off
childhood was rationed then
where
apples overhang
the orchard wall
sun-kissed draped
now about to fall
in
hedgerows ablaze
with succulent sweets
will-power
melts
in a crumble
temptation's face
with whispers
so often
ensnare &enlace
allurement
in her glance
a come hither
perchance
away away
I'll not play
begone
deceit
false words
go go
let not
my ego show
depart depart
I'll not listen
....today
