Today I feel iambic! I would say
of all the meters, I like it the best.
An iamb starts with some soft sound to say
then ev'ry second syllable is stressed.
Trochees likewise, alternate their stresses;
even-numbered syllables are muted.
Nowhere near as popular (my guess is) -
Trochee fans, though, fervently dispute it.
Feet are the units of meter - such fun!
Dactyls have syllables STRESSED/, un-/, and un-.
"T'was the Night Before Christmas" is in Anapest:
that's a foot with three syllables: un-/, un-/, and
STRESSED.
The meter is the pattern of the beats within a line
"Iambic" and "Heptameter" describe this line just fine.
Anapestic Tetrameter: four anapests;
and the best part of THIS lecture series? No tests!
Trimeter has three feet
Tetrameter has just four feet
Pentameter adds one foot, making five
Hexameter adds one: six feet in this beehive
Heptameter has seven feet, but now it's getting late;
and so I'll close with this (you may have guessed):
Octameter has eight!

Oh citrus, my mistress
Exquisite, delicious
Appealing, revealing
No zestier feeling
Acidic confections
Ascerbic dilections
So tangy, so tasty
The tart in a pastry
A scurvy elixir
A fine tonic mixer
Nutritious, sumptuous
Mouth-watering, scrumptious
Exquisite, delicious
Oh citrus, my mistress

I don't think it is a McWhirtle, probably iambic trimeter? Dunno.

Black beyond frozen shores,
Stellar winds blowing spawn.
Pocked lunar lithic pores,
Barren buds blooming dawn.
Shiny crust over mossed,
A young garden’s dew.
Moldy peach luster lost,
Glow spiders hazy blue.
Spores pulsate swelling nodes,
Shrieking howls grunting sounds.
Shrooms lactate yelling toads,
Shadow wolves' hunting grounds.
Silken silvered moon beams,
Silent short sanguine screams.

Stuck In A Snowglobe With You
I'm stuck in a snowglobe with you,
and snowflakes embracing us too.
Our own Christmas day with a view
so private 'neath our sky of blue.
And when the snow stops, right on cue,
we'll have good fun stirring flakes to
quick whirl them around and redo
them falling and swirling anew.
Outside is just ours to review
from cozy protected see-through
smooth bubble of glass. Let's pursue
enjoying our day and construe
we're happy in our glass venue!
What more could we ask for, it's true,
here, quiet, relaxed, whoop-de-doo!
I'm stuck in a snowglobe with you.

Note; This is an Italian Sonnet rhyme scheme but written in hymn meter which is an iambic tetrameter and trimeter mix and echoes a style that Emily Dickinson often used. Although she admired Shakespeare, she didn't write traditional sonnets (which is okay, we like variety and originality).
So ... in honor of Emily and - age and wishes; I wrote 4 years ago I think.
Oh pity my decrepit frame,
with every step I cry;
to see myself through clouded eyes
and barely know my name.
Oh God! To be that youth again
when skyward I could fly,
bereft lament that now abides
with not a soul to blame.
So ... should I ride that plaintive wind,
or wait the gentle breeze -
to climb with wings on upward drafts
...or stay where I have been?
I think I shall await the breeze
and ride it 'til my last.

Hex Sonnetta
The Hex Sonnetta, created by Andrea Dietrich, consists of two six-line stanzas and a finishing rhyming couplet with the following set of rules:
Meter: Iambic Trimeter. Rhyme Scheme: abbaab cddccd ee. Iambic Trimeter means the usual iambic (alternating unstressed/stressed) meter for every line of the poem, but instead of the ten syllables that comprise a typical sonnet’s iambic pentameter, this particular form uses six syllables of iambic trimeter per line, hence the name Hex Sonnetta.

Winter of skates, snow, ice.
Cold chill in the air, coats,
muffins, scarfs , sleds, skies, nice.
Silver bells, music notes.
Slalom’s dangerous way
Hot chocolate, sweaters,
Boots for drifts, wind blown day.
Home by fire, writing letters.
Mistletoe, Santa Claus,
presents, ribbons, bows, strings,
wrappings children then toss.
Toy cars, dolls, Christmas brings.
All is time of great joy ,
Time made for both girl, boy.

My lovely short-lived flower
Your sweet red tender petals
Raised proud towards bright sunlight
So frail, endlessly frail
I am with you in your garden
Kneeling down between you
Curling up while listening
To your soft red whispering
The blue sky high above us
Is playing with your colour
The yellow sun completes it
Primary shades of lost lives
This is the perfect setting
Of sun and your short life’s end
Give me the peace to stay here
Like you I will be reborn

The verse runs down the stream
Dolefully, paintings your
Soulfully, I’m intrigued
Severely, like my cat!
The music resonates
Painfully, story your
Disdainfully, we talk
Sinfully, like the moon!
Your love drips wet like rain
Silently, our love-making
Violently, we now stare
Intently, at each other.
Intensely, let us kiss now,
Fiercely, like the sun!

Forbearance
Rusted doors open slow,
For water to form ice,
Sunset to again rise,
To revive the lost glow,
Clear the restricted flow,
To strengthen the weak ties,
Need patience and courage,
For broken hearts to mend
happy they might pretend,
To speak mind; encourage,
and hamper the scourage,
Pain we must comprehend,
As thunders turn us wise,
aghast leaves in surprise !

A glass wing butterfly,
so very gossamer;
A rainforest treasure,
she looks up to the sky;
And away she will fly,
in deep dark rapture.
Small frogs of the forest,
the bright, colorful hue;
Sweet, they play in the dew,
on green they like to rest;
Oh, they are the sweetest,
and there! Hummingbird blue.
Small creatures all gripping,
under green leaves, dripping.

See the sparkle in children’s bright eyes,
how they glow with a smile on their face.
When a puppet begins to dance free,
with a master who moves him with grace.
Hear the laughter kids shout loud with glee,
when a hand puppet tickles their neck.
Daddy’s game they adore every night
and they scream as he gives each a peck.
Feel the happiness filling the room
mama’s fingers they dance up and down,
with ten puppets so small singing songs
and each one has the face of a clown.
Every eve comes the dark of the night
shadow puppets are formed on the wall.
and a boy who dreams someday he’ll be
the greatest puppet master of all.

In the year before darkness saw light,
When the safety of men knew no shroud.
At the time when the shadows of night,
In the Heavens had not been allowed.
When the spirits of men did not mourn,
Nor the moonshine through ominous clouds,
Nor the souls loving earth had been born.
Nor the blessings of God had been vowed.
When the creatures of life were not made.
Nor the hope of forever engraved.
Nor the Plan of Salvation was stayed
For which choice and rebellion are laid.
When the children of God came not hence.
And their spirits were with Him above,
Nor had wars up in Heaven commenced.
But all gathered around his great love.
When the past and the future were one.
And the dry parts of mass had not spun.
And the time as we know it was not.
The beginning had not yet begun.
