"I can't wriggle out of this bed"
A worm's rear complained to its head
A bluebird dropped by
Took worm for a fly
Happiness is nestlings well fed

Mud
first sign
of spring thaw
slippery worms
dance with the robins
nestlings calling
the cadence

that string
the one the nestlings thought a worm
blows listless on the wind
as clapboards rattle
on withered dreams
of forever
a silence calls
passing clouds
to mourn
a string

A sunflower casts its’ seeds upon soil,
gentle nutrition for children of flight;
she bows her head to observe the dining.
Fruit for fowl enriched by the tiny bees
mama’s nestlings dine so ecstatically;
heads bow in sun salute in celebration
lifts wings to heaven’s gold embrace.

A nesting is but invaded
All nestlings abandoned
But ‘four’ eggs shelled?
Mother bird is gone
Many a tuft of feathers
Drying in the winds!
Broken twigs have bent
The nest will sit misshapen
Under treed branches above!
Mother overhead flees
Skyward tweeting call-back cries
A hungry snake waits!

Nestlings
I write best
Close to the vest
I attest
It’s what I know
Best
In my nest
It’s what I
Behest
I write best
Close to the vest
Be my guest
I’ll unload
My chest
Be just like
An inner inquest
I write best
Close to the vest
Just sit tight
I’ll feed ya
The rest

spring hands over her bleach gowns to summer
environment grows pale green ---
cosmos under rebirth
earth tries color revolutions and fails
jaundice yellow leaf lips crack ---
no chill thrill in grass blades
Nestlings of sparrows feel hot in nestles
cuckoos from crow nests escape ---
cocoon covers hang free

Up
in the sky
on thermals
riding high,
a kite;
Out
from below
looking to and fro,
three sleepy
dormice;
High
in a tree,
so,so hungry
nestlings,one,two
and three,
Straight,
to their door
today's plat du jour
live rodents
galore

Light Verse
As a grey dove, nestlings are taught
The Basic Rudiments of Wings:
if one falls, it cannot be caught
First, learn to fly, then how to sing.
A perfect lesson elders bring.
A human babe, on other hand,
is often caught before he stands.
So, as life goes, if he should fall,
expects a catch before he lands.
He needs to learn how to forestall.

On the Clock
Glassy pearl adorn bare , emerald green
Ash cloud the earth
Crystalized structures fall
Awakening gray and dull
Elastic boughs regain foliage
The fresh chirp of nestlings
Slowly decline
As mother works on the clock

There is a sombre silence,
as mist veils morning air.
A plethora of feathers
float among dew drops.
A ceremony of birds,
heads slumping,
soundless and homeless,
perch upon rooftops,
observing fallen nests,
cracked eggs and
lifeless nestlings.
Arrival of their fate
is like paper in a storm.
But birds don't ask why,
they just spread their wings and fly.

Small rain in summer
Pools on large green leaves,
Makes all birds dumber
Silently they weave.
Wrens fly to and fro
Nesting near the house.
They know where to go
With nestlings and spouse.
Simple life of green
Hiding in lush leaves.
A space to be unseen
Humans only grieve.
Where is our safe space,
Where can we live well?
As anguish veils the face
In green thoughts I dwell.

There are towel-drying winds.
parks grow soggy with small dogs.
May is an old man riding a bike backwards.
It is oil for the broken engine in the barn.
Wetness folds this way and that
the sky unzips a larkish sunshine.
We hear nestlings in their reservoirs of dew.
New life bubbles in puddles,
the green and tufted arrive out of nowhere,
boys' fish for skittish girls,
beryl buds swell, unclasp and curl.

Unlike the robin caring for her young
weaving a nest of affection
sitting sentry, perched on pale-blue eggshells
nourishing new-hatched fledglings
her joy as worms whirl down
their cavernous, yearning orifices...
A woman's tender love for her young
deepens as calendar pages turn
blossoming in Spring, flourishing in Summer
~ her nestlings long-departed ~
thriving in Autumn, yet vibrant through Winter

HER FEET IS SMOTHERED BY MOSS,
HER ARMS SPROUTING MUSHROOMS,
HER LEAFY FINGERS,
HER IMPOTENT EYES,
HER HAIR HOUSES NESTLINGS,
FROZEN BRAIN WITH REBUFFED THOUGHTS,
FAINT HEARTED,
HER LIPS READ EULOGY OF HER PAST LIFE,
HER NOSTRILS BREATHE DRY ICE,
HER CHEST HOLDS DRIED UP ESSENCE OF LIFE,
SHE STANDS PLANTED IN AN UNIFORMED GARDEN,
WITH THE GARDENER ONLY FOCUSING TO REST UNDER HER SHADE,
BOTHERLESS OF HER WITHERING,
I MEAN THE TREE.

Classicism
Showers gag the trees,
May shuttles pleats in the sky.
There are towel-drying winds.
Parks grow soggy with small dogs;
May is an old man riding a bike backwards.
It is oil for the broken engine in the barn.
Wetness folds this way and that.
We see nestlings in reservoirs of dew.
Bubbles pop in puddles,
could it be new Life?
Could it be May, hands in its pockets
like a small boy, whistling and waiting
for something green
and tufted to happen?

Twig fell down before my eyes –
Not a tree in sight.
As I glanced up to the skies
I caught a bird in flight…
Heading to its nest below
A traffic light suspended,
Where its babies might just grow,
So easily defended.
I wonder if the nestlings hear
The changing colors clicking
And if it’s comfort more than fear
Within their brains that’s sticking.
If so, those birds will always calm
When traffic lights do change,
An urban dose of soothing balm
Observers might find strange.

Feeding the nestlings she came up an inch-worm too short.
Soggy ink-stained signs muttered in the rain.
The old cat caught the scent of a mouse.
A cat has nine lives, a frog croaks every night, but a rumor lives forever.
Freshly crushed coffee beans mellowed in the mist of sunrise.
The silence was shattered by the roar of a mosquito.
His voice was lost in the echoes of his anger.
The snake moved slowly over the hot stone massage.
The naked truth need not be covered up.
