we finish each other's sentences
saying "we are redundant" six times a day

One problem with gasoline is, it smells
Another is, prices are high as hell --
But a real good friend of mine
  Pays just a buck forty-nine --
Says he stocks up daily at Taco Bell...

Fire
forty-nine years of desire
fifty-nine: too early to retire
a line in the sand
On the one hand
FIRE!
On the other
WATER ...
On a sacred hill, a virgin roams with childhood companions
before the Sacrifice!
Mother's regret
single, separated ......

Premium Member Life In Pajamas
Wearing my p.j.’s again today.
Third day?
Fourth?
Nineteenth?
It is my painting outfit, so back off.
I take a whiff.
It’s not that bad yet.
I might put it into the laundry.
The laundry king knows it has to be washed by morning.
Guess I will keep him another forty-nine years....

The Symbolic Life

Nine years old
And picking candy
Off the shelf at Woolworth.
Two Tootsie rolls, and
A Rolo, then a bite off of
A wax bottle filled with sugar.
Forty nine years old,
And picking candy out of
My medicine bottle,
Two Oxycodones,
And a Morphine,
And bite off a Valium....

Loving life at sixty eight
Looking forward to sixty nine
Sixty nine is the new forty-nine
My eyes see well, my heart is happy
I have new hobbies, I look forward to life
I am self-actualized and excited about this next year
Sixty nine, sixty nine, I sing happily about this new birth date time
Loving looking forward to sixty nine...

Five Seconds
The tiny box of three
Quiet in inconsequence
Cowers to bored night
Theory picket fence

Two fly ice
Chosen expertise and calm
Distress the daily grind
Confused in sweated palm

The faithful forty-nine
Hope and safety fed
Now speak unwitting blank
In bitter contact red

The suffering alive
Peak through bewildered eye
Barred to understand
Such loss in seconds Five...

Tommy Morrison
He was a boxer and his name was Tommy Morrison.
He starred in Rocky V as Tommy Gunn.
He died last year at the age of forty-four.
It's sad because he's not alive anymore.
He won forty-nine of his fifty-two fights.
He always punched out his opponents lights.
Morrison's boxing career ended in 2008.
Now he's dead and it's what many hate.

(Dedicated to Tommy Morrison who died on September 1, 2013.)...

'Mum, you okay'
Why did this happen; how can I survive
A son should never die before his mum
One day so alive; next day you have died
Forty nine years young; life has gone my son
Your own son now a man of twenty one
his heart is crying out for you his dad
She yearns for cuddles she will never have
your sweetest girl; her heads in such a whirl
A wife sheds tears for her Sir Galahad
'Mum, you okay' ~ my mind starts to unfurl...

Premium Member Poetry Was No Longer My Thing
I decided that poetry was no longer my thing
Ideas were not coming, falling off my back, sliding onto my desk.
I shut down my computer and stopped thinking of words.
My list-making ceased. I was done. It was over. Kaput.
This lasted about three days, but then bam.
The muses were back in full force, and I began filling up notebooks.
I had to have a place to put these missives.
What better place than Poetry Soup?
So forty-nine hours later, I was back....

Nick's Masterpiece
Quarterback Nick Foles has a claim to fame. He recently threw seven touchdown passes in a game. Forty-nine points scored proved to be a plethora. Nick’s Eagles were the team from Philadelphia. The Eagles offense displayed some powerful guns. The Raiders from Oakland were the unfortunate ones. The game was played at the Oakland Coliseum. For Raiders fans, there was an unfavorable outcome. The results of the game left many of them glum.

My Heart
What can I say
I can't pray the pain away
even now, some years later
words escape the page and paper.

You were my heart
 forty-nine years in its start
a sense, a feeling
 sent my heart to beating.

Without a word, only a simple sigh
you slipped away leaving me to cry
and now left to walk alone
I live in memory of the love we owned.

Missing you never goes away
no goodbyes, just a kiss that stays,
here I am, unable to speak
awaiting my turn to reach that peak....

Still the One
Close your eyes a moment, breathe in deep
 clear your mind of all the noise and dream of sleep;
listen as my heart beats slow and steady
 leaning on the memories, unexpected delights at the ready;
mark the years, some forty nine well shared
 oh what an interesting image we paired;
don't say a word, none necessary at this stage,
 your smile enough, embrace of youth,  joy of old age;
love and time is all we ever needed in life's run
meant to be and for me, you are still the only one....

Premium Member Lost Years
Where did all of those years go
this question plagues us, one and all
Our days of youth now past,
but thanks to God, they were a ball

I went to bed at nineteen
and woke up at forty-nine
I pray I get some more,
before the end of the line

The older that we get
time seems to go by so fast
Enjoy these fleeting moments
I wish they could somehow last

Like the changing of the seasons,
time is constantly changing our lives
We all must give our best,
so that our future will revive...
